MIUI 13: Here’s everything you need to know about Xiaomi’s latest Android skin

At a launch event in China on December 28, 2021, Xiaomi unveiled the latest version of its Android skin — MIUI 13. As you’d expect, MIUI 13 comes with a bunch of new features and performance improvements, including new privacy features, a new system font, a bunch of cool wallpapers, and even a version optimized for tablets. Here’s a quick overview of everything new in MIUI 13, followed by its wallpapers, rollout schedule, download links, and more.

MIUI 13: New Features and Performance Improvements

MIUI 13 brings several performance improvements over the previous release — MIUI 12.5. Xiaomi claims that the latest version of its custom Android skin offers better app fluency with 15% fewer dropped frames in third-party applications when compared to the previous release. Xiaomi’s native apps also run better on the new release, with 23% fewer dropped frames.

Xiaomi claims that MIUI 13 ranks at the top in Master Lu’s fluency test, beating Android skins from other OEMs on devices across all price points. Xiaomi has also improved the multitasking capabilities on MIUI 13, and the software now lets you have up to 14 apps open in the background on a flagship device at any given time.

Xiaomi has also worked on making MIUI 13 more secure for the end-users with new features like face verification protection, privacy watermark, and fraud protection. At the moment, we don’t have the complete details for all these features. However, we do know that the privacy watermark feature will let you add a watermark to images that you share to prevent misuse.

The fraud protection feature, on the other hand, consists of a couple of different measures to protect users from online and telecom frauds, like “E-fraud warning,” “Official logo,” Fraud application installation interception,” and “Transfer protection.”

MiSans font

As mentioned earlier, MIUI 13 also includes a new system font called MiSans. It’s a flat and minimal font with rich Opentype features, like automatically adjusting the height of hyphens to uppercase and lowercase letters. The font is free to download for both personal and commercial use.

Furthermore, MIUI 13 comes with a host of new live wallpapers that showcase crystal formation. Xiaomi says that these wallpapers were captured using a polarization microscope via 8K timelapse photography. We’ll make sure to share these new wallpapers with you as soon as the first build of MIUI 13 starts rolling out to devices.

In addition, MIUI 13 also includes support for a bunch of new widgets, like “Super Countdown Day” and “Water Measuring Cup”. The company only gave us a glimpse of these new widgets during the launch event, but we expect to learn more details in the coming days.

Along with MIUI 13 for smartphones, Xiaomi also announced MIUI 13 Pad during today’s launch event. MIUI 13 Pad is an optimized version of Xiaomi’s Android skin for large-screen devices. It brings some additional features to help users make the most of the extra screen real estate. Xiaomi has also worked with developers to optimize apps for this new tablet interface and the company claims that over 3000 apps have already been adapted for large screens.

Along with all the new features mentioned above, MIUI 13 Pad includes a few additional features to improve the multitasking experience on large-screen devices. These include features like a new shortcut to quickly switch between full screen and windowed modes, window scaling, a global taskbar with drag and drop support for multitasking, and more. MIUI 13 Pad also offers support for a bunch of keyboard shortcuts to enhance productivity.

Xiaomi plans to start rolling out MIUI 13 to the first batch of devices by the end of January 2022. The new Xiaomi 12, Xiaomi 12 Pro, and the Xiaomi 12X will be among the first devices to receive the update, along with the Mi 11 Ultra, the Mi 11 Pro, and the Mi 11.

Honor Magic V specifications and renders leaked ahead of the official launch

Honor will soon be unveiling its first-ever foldable phone to take on the lies of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and OPPO Find N. The company has been teasing the upcoming phone on social media for a while now. Just a few days ago, the company gave us a sneak peek at the phone’s design and confirmed the launch date. Now ahead of the official launch, leaked specifications and renders of the Honor Magic V have surfaced online.

Leaked renders and specifications of the Honor Magic V come courtesy of Ishaan Agarwal and MySmartPrice. As you can see in the renders attached below, the phone features a design similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The back houses a triple camera setup with the Honor logo perpendicular to the camera module. Meanwhile, the outer cover display has a centered hole-punch for the selfie camera. The phone is said to come in three colors: Orange, Black, and White.

According to Agarwal, the Honor Magic V will feature a 7.9-inch OLED main display with 2272 x 1984 screen resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. Meanwhile, the outer cover display is said to be a 6.45-inch FHD+ panel offering a 120Hz refresh rate. The phone will reportedly be powered by Qualcomm’s newly announced Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, paired with 12GB RAM and 256GB/512GB storage. In terms of camera hardware, we’re told the phone will feature a triple camera setup consisting of a 50MP f/1.9 main shooter, a 50MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera, and a 50MP f/2.0 “Spectrum Enhanced” (likely a monochrome sensor) camera. Over on the front, you’ll find a 42MP selfie shooter. Elsewhere, the Honor Magic V will reportedly pack a 4,760mAh battery with 66W fast charging support and has DTS:X Ultra speakers. Finally, it will run MagicUI 6 based on Android 12 out-of-the-box.

The Honor Magic V is officially launching in China on January 1o, so we won’t have to wait long to learn more about the company’s first foldable offering.

AMD Ryzen 6000 Series: Release date, price, and everything you need to know

After a successful run with the 5000 series CPUs, AMD kickstarted its 2022 product launches with a new generation of chips for the notebook market. AMD marked the beginning of a busy and important year with its new Ryzen 6000 series mobile processors. These “Rembrandt” APUs feature up to eight powerful Zen3+ cores and its latest RDNA 2 graphics to deliver reliable performance for day-to-day workloads, gaming, and more. There’s a lot to discuss when it comes to the Ryzen 6000 series mobile chips, so we decided to curate all the information in place. The Ryzen 6000 family of mobile processors has ten different SKUs that are divided into two main categories. There’s the U-series which includes 15W-28W hardware to power portable thin and light notebooks, and then there are the H-series with up 35W and 45W+ units for high-end gaming laptops. Together, we’re looking at quite the lineup which AMD says will be used in over 200 premium machines in 2022.

AMD Zen3+ Cores

The AMD 6000 series processors are built on the updated AMD “Zen 3+” core that is optimized to deliver high performance-per-watt. It’s worth pointing out that these are the fastest AMD Ryzen processors yet, with up to 5GHz clock speeds. The new Zen3+ cores have now some advanced power management features to increase the overall endurance of these chips. The new Ryzen 6000 series mobile processors use up to 30% less power than the previous-gen processors in some workloads, which is quite impressive.

AMD RDNA 2 Architecture-Based Graphics

The AMD Ryzen 6000 series mobile CPUs, in case you don’t know, are also the first mobile processors to feature RDNA 2 architecture-based iGPU. RDNA 2 allows the new APUs to perform twice as fast as the last-gen APUs. The Rembrandt APU is the industry’s first APU with hardware ray-tracing, and AMD says it works flawlessly with the help of the company’s Fidelity FX Super Resolution. The new 6000 mobile chips have up to 12 graphics compute units with up to 2.4GHz GPU frequency. This is an upgrade from eight Vega units that we’ve seen in the past from AMD.

With up to 1.5x larger GPU Compute Engines and up to 1.5X more memory bandwidth, AMD is touting the new chips to be able to deliver a truly playable gaming on-the-go experience. The company is promising 1080p gaming at varying graphics settings with just the APU. This means, even the portable thin and light machines should be able to handle your gaming needs, without forcing an to upgrade to a more powerful machine.

AMD Ryzen 6000 series gaming performance

AMD has also announced a set of new mobile graphics solutions that allow users to benefit from AMD’s Advantage platform when paired with the new H35+ CPUs. Pairing a Ryzen 6000 series mobile processor with, say, a 6000 series mobile GPU will allow the system to use SmartShift Max for dynamically adjusting power consumption between CPU and GPU for better performance and power efficiency.

DDR5 Support & Microsoft Pluton

As expected, AMD’s new Rembrandt CPUs also have updated memory controllers with support for up to DDR5-5200 and LPDDR5-6400. AMD hasn’t mentioned anything about DDR4 support which makes us believe the new APUs have ditched DDR4 support entirely in favor of the new standard. The new units also jump from PCIe 3.0 to PCIe 4.0 with 8x support for a discrete GPU and 12x split between storage and chipset. There’s also support for USB 4 and WiFi 6E, which means laptop manufacturers can follow Thunderbolt 3 specifications. The USB 4 support is not to be confused with Thunderbolt 4, though.

AMD also briefly mentioned the fact that its Ryzen 6000 CPUs features Microsoft Pluton Support. The first mentions of Pluton processor date back to November 2020 when Microsoft said it’s working with silicon partners including AMD, Intel, Qualcomm, etc., to enable chip-to-cloud security technology using Pluton. This, combined with other security features offered by AMD including AMD Secure Processor and AMD Memory Guard, the Ryzen 6000 series CPUs are touted to be some of the most secure chips on the market.

All the new AMD Ryzen 6000 Series processors are built using TSMC’s 6nm process technology. The Ryzen 9 6980HX sits on top of the product stack carrying 8 cores and 16 threads. This particular, as you can see, can be boosted to hit a max frequency of 5.0GHz, making it the fastest Ryzen chip on the market. This is one we expect locking horns with Intel’s Core i9-12900HK as well as the Apple M1 Max chip. The Ryzen 9 6980HS is also just as powerful, although it defaults to 35W, as opposed to 45W+ on the 6980HX.

All the Ryzen 9 and Ryzen 7 CPUs, as you can see, also have a larger GPU Compute Engine with as many as 12 GPU compute units. This, as we mentioned earlier, is an upgrade from eight Vega units as seen in previous Ryzen APUs. The Ryzen 6000 U-series chips will enable powerful experiences for those who’re looking to buy notebooks with thin and form factors.

AMD Ryzen 6000 CPUs Release Date & Pricing

AMD’s Ryzen 6000 mobile CPUs are available to OEMs right now, which means it’s only a matter of time till we start seeing new and improved versions of the existing laptops on the market. A handful of manufacturers including Lenovo, HP, Razer, MSI, Alienware, etc., have already announced a bunch of new laptops powered by the Ryzen 6000 mobile CPUs.

The Ryzen 6000 series only has mobile chips, which will be shared with OEM partners for building new machines. AMD’s next generation of desktop CPUs will be launched under 7000 series. Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge with 120W fast charging support launched in India

The past few months in India have been rather quiet with respect to phone launches. The Redmi Note 11T did make its way to India at the end of 2021 but there was nothing really special about it. However, that’s changing now with the launch of the Xiaomi 11i and Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge.

Xiaomi reintroduced its ‘i’ series of phones in India with the Mi 10i at the beginning of last year, which offered 5G support and a 108MP camera. Continuing that tradition of introducing new innovations in this series, the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge is the first phone to come with 120W fast charging in India. If you went through the specifications of both phones, you would realize that the only difference between the Xiaomi 11i and the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge is in terms of battery and charging. The standard Xiaomi 11i has a larger 5,160mAh battery with 67W fast charging support. But, the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge takes it up a notch with 120W fast charging. The battery capacity has been reduced slightly on the HyperCharge variant, though, and you get a 4,500mAh unit. Given the extremely fast charging, the smaller battery size shouldn’t matter too much. After all, Xiaomi claims that you can charge the phone completely from 0-100% in just 15 minutes which is insane.

Apart from that, both phones share the exact same specifications throughout. Under the hood, there’s a MediaTek Dimensity 920 SoC based on the 6nm manufacturing node. It is a mid-range SoC that should ensure great performance on the device. Of course, you also get 5G connectivity with 8 5G bands. The base variant of both devices gets 6GB of RAM along with 128GB of internal storage. The storage can be expanded via a hybrid slot, which means you can either use two SIM cards or a SIM and a micro SD card.

Another highlight of the Xiaomi 11i and 11i HyperCharge is the 108MP primary camera. Of course, Xiaomi has used this sensor on a lot of its phones already so it isn’t something new. But it ensures that the phones are well-rounded in all aspects from performance to cameras to charging. An aspect where Xiaomi has been doing really well on all its upper mid-range devices is the display. The Xiaomi 11i and 11i HyperCharge don’t disappoint in this regard either. The phones get a 6.67-inch OLED display with a refresh rate of 120Hz and HDR10 support.

The phones adopt flat sides along the edges reminiscent of the new iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 design. The frame is made of polycarbonate while the back is glass. Xiaomi has opted for a nice-looking design for the Xiaomi 11i series and the color options complement it well. For those wondering, both the 67W charger for the Xiaomi 11i and the 120W charger for the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge are provided within the box itself.

The Xiaomi 11i starts at ₹24,999 for the base variant while the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge starts at ₹26,999. The higher RAM variants are priced at ₹26,999 and ₹28,999, respectively. Google brings back Cast volume controls for Pixel phones with January 2022 update

With Android 12, Google quietly removed one important feature: the ability to control the volume of Cast-enabled devices using your phone’s volume buttons. On Android 11 and earlier versions you could change the volume of an ongoing Cast session by simply pressing the volume buttons from any screen. But that convenience is gone in the latest version of Android — you now have to open the relevant app to adjust the volume. Earlier in November Google said it had to temporarily disable the feature due to a legal issue and that it would bring it back in Android 12L. But it appears we won’t have to wait till the next Android release to get the feature back.

As spotted by Mishaal Rahman, Google has seemingly re-enabled Cast volume controls for Pixel phones running Android 12 with the January 2022 security update. That means you can once again control the volume of your Cast session using the volume keys from any screen.

As you can see in the screenshot above, when you’re streaming something to a Cast-enabled device, pressing the volume key will bring up the familiar Cast volume slider.

It’s unclear whether Cast volume controls will make their way to other Android 12 devices anytime soon. For now, it seems the feature is only coming to Pixel phones running Android 12. The January 2022 update was released earlier this week and is currently rolling out to the Pixel 3, Pixel 4, and Pixel 5 series. Meanwhile, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will get it sometime later this month.

Anker shows off its new 100W GaN charger, AIO webcam, and Android TV projector at CES

CES is a notable event for the tech industry, where companies get to show off their latest products and technologies. This year’s event is no different, as we’ve witnessed the reveal of some exciting products. Some of the noteworthy highlights of CES 2022 come from Anker. The company has shared details about its upcoming devices — including a 100W GaN charger, AIO webcam, and an Android TV projector.

Anker revealed a new 100W gallium nitride charger at CES (via The Verge). It features one USB type A in addition to two USB type C ports, and it supports USB Power Delivery 3.0 PPS. This wall charger allows power delivery at up to 100 watts. However, it’s worth mentioning that if you have more than one device plugged into it, then it’ll divide the 100W between them accordingly. The company states that this Anker 736 Nano II is “the world’s smallest 100W gallium nitride wall charger,” and it will be available in stores next March for $79.

Another handy product that Anker announced at CES is an all-in-one (AIO) webcam (via The Verge). The B600 Video Bar is the go-to in the era of remote work and endless Zoom meetings. It features a 2K sensor that can capture at 30FPS, adjustable field of view, autofocus, AI-powered zooming, and more. Additionally, its microphones are capable of reducing background noise so others can hear you more clearly.

In addition to that, this AOI webcam comes with speakers and a light. The latter can supports MagicSight — which adjusts the lighting automatically — and can be further controlled through an app. This makes the Video Bar the ultimate online conferencing tool. You won’t have to deal with separate devices to get the correct lighting, upload your live video stream, and listen to what people are saying on their ends. You can grab one starting January 25 for $220 only.

In addition to the charger and webcam, Anker also revealed at CES a new Android TV projector that comes with built-in speakers (via The Verge). The Nebula Cosmos Laser 4K runs Android TV 10.0 and includes a “4K streaming dongle” to mirror content from your phone. As its name suggests, it can project 4K images at 2400 ANSI lumens. This makes it a decent projector for dark environments. Additionally, it includes a pair of 30W speakers to make it convenient to move your setup around. The company states that it’ll be available on Kickstarter starting January 11 for $2,199, with shipping aimed at March.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Ride Vision System will help guide self-driving cars

Qualcomm’s push into automotive wouldn’t be complete without a chipset dedicated to self-driving cars. The company’s Snapdragon Ride Vision System is an all-new software stack from Arriver paired with a 4nm SoC. It’s designed for an optimized implementation of front and surround cameras for automated driving (AD) and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

Qualcomm is confident that this system is “one of the industry’s most scalable and open” systems when it comes to AD and ADAS. The company says that its flexible deployment options allow “for a common implementation of features and requirements, with functional safety/SOTIF support, across virtually all vehicle tiers and types”. Qualcomm has been working on both AD and ADAS for a while now, with the company first announcing its entrance to the space at CES in 2020.

The Snapdragon Ride Vision System can detect static road geometry such as lane markers and guard rails, dynamic objects such as vehicles, and pedestrians and cyclists. It also has traffic sign recognition for global regulatory requirements. Custom neural network architectures for the chipset’s enhanced perception is based on 8MP wide field of view cameras.

As Qualcomm puts it, it’s an open and customizable system, so car manufacturers will be able to chop and change it to fit their own needs. Qualcomm also says that it supports Over-the-Air (OTA) updates for ongoing feature enhancements.

“As we further collaborate with the automakers and Tier 1 suppliers, our latest Snapdragon Ride Vision System aims to address a growing need for a more open, adaptable and scalable platform for computer vision solutions,” said Nakul Duggal, senior vice president and GM, automotive, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “Snapdragon Ride focuses on the extensive automated driving needs of our customers, ranging from scalable SoCs to integrated AD stacks and development platforms, and tools, that provide a comprehensive solution for L2-L3 automated driving, while maintain the flexibility to accommodate automakers and Tier-1 suppliers to bring their preferred solutions.  The Snapdragon Ride Vision System can offer automakers the opportunity to customize more advanced driving experiences for every vehicle class.”

The Snapdragon Ride Vision System is expected to be available in vehicle production in 2024. Qualcomm has also announced that it is working with Renault Group on some connected car features with a “Digital Chassis” package of software and hardware developed by Qualcomm.

Samsung Freestyle is a projector with the software of a smart TV

There has been an ever-growing number of smart projectors over the past few years, which combine a standard wall projector with a built-in media system (usually some variation of Android). Anker has a few of them under its Nebula brand, and the Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector is another example. Samsung is now entering that market with the ‘Samsung Freestyle,’ one of the company’s major announcements at CES 2022.

Samsung says the Freestyle is “a projector, smart speaker and ambient lighting device all rolled into one lightweight, portable device.” It weighs 830 grams (1.82 pounds/29.2 ounces), and has a unique rotating case that allows it to rotate 180 degrees. Samsung says it can be powered with a standard USB-PD connection, as long as 50W/20V charging (or higher) is supported by the adapter or battery. There does not appear to be any internal battery, unlike most of the Nebula smart projectors sold by Anker — the Freestyle is definitely intended to be used indoors near a power source.

The rotating design allows it to switch between projecting on walls and ceilings without being propped up by other objects. Like most smart projectors, it supports auto keystone, so it can detect the angle of the projection surface and adjust the picture as needed to prevent distortion. Samsung says it can project images up to 100 inches in size, but there’s no mention of the brightness level, which is usually where projectors this small fall short — brighter images require larger (and heavier) lamps.

The software experience should be roughly identical to what you would find on Samsung’s smart TVs, with built-in streaming apps and casting/mirror functionality for Android and iOS devices. It also has far-field microphones, so the Freestyle’s voice assistant will be able to hear people from the other side of a room. Samsung didn’t say which voice assistants would be available on the offered, but considering the software should match the company’s TVs, Bixby and Google Assistant will probably be available. A smart speaker mode is also available, as well as a mood lighting effect.

Samsung says the Freestyle will be available for pre-order later today (January 4), presumably on the company’s online store.

The OnePlus 10 Pro comes with 80W fast charging, Hasselblad cameras, OxygenOS 12, and more

The OnePlus 10 Pro‘s design was officially revealed yesterday, and today OnePlus is sharing the specifications of its upcoming flagship. While some of its specifications, like the inclusion of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, can easily be guessed, other specs like 80W fast wired charging are more of a surprise.

OnePlus has mentioned the display tech but has omitted the other useful bits of this spec. Early leaks had suggested that the OnePlus 10 Pro would be coming with a 6.7-inch QHD+ display, but there has been no confirmation from the company on this. Similarly, RAM and storage capacities have not been mentioned, but previous leaks have mentioned the usual combination of 8GB + 128GB and 12GB + 256GB. OnePlus has also not mentioned more details on the camera setup other than the megapixel values and the Hasselblad branding, so we will have to wait on that as well.

The most interesting bits here are the bumped-up fast charging. The OnePlus 9 Pro came with 65W fast charging, which could accomplish a full charge within the half-hour. The OnePlus 10 Pro is on its way to one-up that — the company hasn’t shared charging times, but 80W should ideally be even quicker than 65W. Also included is 50W wireless fast charging, which could get a full charge on the OnePlus 9 Pro in under 45 minutes. There’s bound to be proprietary charging tech involved, but OnePlus has not explicitly confirmed this. Curiously, OnePlus is using OPPO’s branding for the charging tech — the underlying tech is the same in both cases.

OnePlus 9RT and Buds Z2 are coming to India on January 14

The OnePlus 9RT and OnePlus Buds Z2 were first revealed all the way back in October, but the products still aren’t available everywhere. OnePlus is only selling the 9RT in China, while the Buds Z2 have arrived in a handful of countries (including the United States and much of Europe). Now it seems both products will be arriving in India soon, according to a new teaser from OnePlus.

OnePlus has revealed on its official forums that the OnePlus 9RT 5G and OnePlus Buds Z2 will launch in India on January 14, accompanied by a livestream at 5PM IST on the company’s Indian YouTube channel. Yes, this is an announcement of an announcement — OnePlus didn’t specify if the devices will actually go on sale on January 14. Earlier rumors indicated OnePlus was aiming for a December release for the 9RT and Buds Z2 in India.

OnePlus talked a bit about the phone, saying “the OnePlus 9RT 5G, is an extension of OnePlus 9R, and carries on the legacy of powerful flagships geared to propel you ahead of the game. On top of the impeccably robust performance, OnePlus 9RT 5G also offers uncompromising features in design, imaging performance, and display quality. Redefining the conventional performance offered by entry-level flagships, this power-packed offering delivers an enhanced experience for avid gamers and power-users alike.”

The forum post didn’t specify the differences between the India and China versions of the OnePlus 9RT, so we’ll likely have to wait until January 14 for that information. Even if the hardware is the same, OnePlus will presumably use OxygenOS 12 instead of the ColorOS software on the Chinese version (even if there’s not much of a difference between them now).

OnePlus has not yet released the kernel source code for any variation of the OnePlus 9RT. However, you can download the included wallpapers.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE hands on: keeping the Galaxy S21 alive

The Galaxy S20 series was one of Samsung’s largest selling phone ranges, and part of that success was down to the Galaxy S20 FE. Dubbed the Fan Edition (or FE for short) – a throwback to the rebuilt Galaxy Note 7 Fan Edition – Samsung sold over 10 million Galaxy S20 FE units in the past year since its launch in Q4 2020. At CES 2022, Samsung launched the next generation of the Fan Edition – the Galaxy S21 FE.

The Galaxy S21 FE brings the best of the Galaxy S21 range at a lower starting price than the Galaxy S21 range, and crucially, unlike its namesake series, this will be a phone that is sold for the next year at least. Available in four colorways with a premium matte textured feel, the Galaxy S21 FE will likely offer everything you could want in a Galaxy smartphone, and especially if the upcoming Galaxy S22 series doesn’t cut it for you.

At an exclusive event earlier at CES 2022 in Las Vegas, we went hands-on with the Galaxy S21 FE.

If you know anything about the Galaxy S21 series, chances are you’ll know most of the specs and features found in the Galaxy S21 FE. That said, one thing that’s immediately clear is how nice this phone feels in the hand. The matte textured rear offers grip, is ergonomically friendly, and looks fantastic, especially in the lavender color which is slightly more saturated than the namesake color found on the Galaxy Z Flip 3.

The design language of the Galaxy S21 FE is almost identical to the Galaxy S21 series, with the same contour-cut design resulting in a slightly raised camera hump – albeit, less so than the main phones in the series. The frame of the phone is an aluminum build but it still retains the premium feel that the Galaxy S21 series offered.

There are four color options for the Galaxy S21 series, and by far my favorite is the lavender. It is virtually the perfect shade of purple and it’s a better colorway than the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The other color options include an Olive green, which is very similar to the same in the Galaxy Buds 2, Black and White. If you’ve seen the Galaxy Buds 2 colors, you’ll know the Galaxy S21 FE colors.

Beyond the design similarities, the Galaxy S21 FE features many of the same specs found on the Galaxy S21 series. On paper, it’s best described as a combination of the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21 Plus, and given it’ll replace these two devices in Samsung’s ongoing lineup, it makes sense that Samsung would build a hybrid device featuring the best of these two phones.

It features a 6.4-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X Display which is bigger than the Galaxy S21 (6.2-inches) and smaller than the Galaxy S21 Plus (6.7-inches), albeit with the same resolution and display technology. Like the rest of the Galaxy S21 series, the Galaxy S21 FE display supports a 120Hz refresh rate for smooth scrolling, HDR10+, and an Always On Display. It also features the latest protection from Corning – Gorilla Glass Victus.

In the US, the Galaxy S21 FE is powered by a Snapdrag0n 888 processor whilst in some countries, it’s likely to use an Exynos processor. There are two storage and memory options; the base model comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, whilst the premium variant features 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

The triple camera setup features the same wide and ultra-wide cameras from the Galaxy S21 and S21 Plus, although the telephoto camera takes a fairly substantial hit. The main camera is a 12MP wide sensor with dual pixel autofocus, Optical Image Stabilization, whilst the ultra-wide is a 12MP sensor with 120° field of view, f/2.2 aperture, and 1.4µm pixel size. The telephoto camera is cut from the 64MP sensor found previously to an 8MP sensor, albeit it still supports 30x digital zoom.

The rest of the specs are fairly standard with a 4,500 mAh battery powering the entire package, which can be topped up using either 25W wired charging or 15W wireless charging. There’s also reverse wireless charging to recharge your accessories, a range of 5G bands and sensors, and IP68 water and dust resistance. The Galaxy S21 FE also launches running One UI 4 on top of Android 12.

The Galaxy S21 FE launches next week for $699.99 for the base variant, whilst the premium variant with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage will cost you $769.99. It’ll be available from a range of carriers and from Samsung directly, and presumably, there’ll be plenty of trade-in deals to further reduce the cost of the phone.

Overall, the Galaxy S21 FE is designed to replace the existing Galaxy S21 range in Samsung’s lineup, especially as the latter is mostly out of stock already. With Samsung planning to launch its next range of phones in the coming months at a higher price, the Galaxy S21 FE is designed to be the phone that keeps the legacy of the Galaxy S21 series alive, and in this, it seems to deliver.
