Jide Launch Remix IO, 4K Android Powered TV, Gaming and PC Hub For $99

Jide, the company behind the Android-based Remix OS, has announced their latest venture into hardware. Starting at $99 the Remix IO is designed to be a TV set-top box, console, and PC all in one device centred around the latest version of Remix OS/Android 7.0 which boasts 4K output at 60fps and HDR support.

Jide has always been community focused which is one of the reasons they house their forums here at XDA, their staff patrol the various remix sub-forums listening to feedback and offering assistance where needed. It was this relationship with their users and the feedback provided which has lead to them developing their unique TV mode interface based on the interests of the community. The ability to switch between TV and PC mode is definitely an interesting move which allows the device to run apps designed for both regular Android and Android TV and intelligently choose which to use at any given time. As you can imagine, playing games designed for a touch screen with a controller or mice and Keyboard has never been an easy feat; Remix OS allows you to map touch controls to keyboard, mouse, and game controller inputs, making the entire process simpler.

"Jide's community has been an important part of the company growth and Remix OS' development since we launched it to the world in March 2015. Their support meant that our previous Remix Mini campaign was a resounding success, and raised over US$1.6m on Kickstarter. Our new campaign is a way for us to go back to where it all started and offer our three million Remix OS users a Kickstarter exclusive on the new Remix IO"

David Ko, co-founder of Jide Technology

Remix IO is available to back on Kickstarter now starting at $99 and will ship to backers worldwide in March 2017

Device: Remix IO
CPU: RK3368 CPU Octa-Core 64bit ARM® Cortex™-A53 1.5GHz
GPU: PowerVR SGX6110
RAM: 2GB DDR3L
Storage: 16GB (MicroSD support for 128GB)
Ports and connections: 4x USB Type-A 2.0, HDMI 2.0 (Outputs up to 4K@60fps), VGA, Wi-Fi 2.4Ghz/5Ghz 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, Ethernet port, 3.5mm audio jack, 9V/2A power supply
Accessories: a TV remote bundled as standard, a Jide game controller bundled in the gaming edition, full keyboard and mouse support with shortcuts, and a smartphone app for iOS and Android that is currently in development.

Editors note: It is worth noting that whilst 16GB will not get you very far with app downloads and media, removable and adoptable storage make this a null point when taking the price into account. I personally have a portable 2TB HDD connected to my Shield TV.

Google Launches Android Pay in Hong Kong

Google has been rapidly expanding the availability of their mobile payments service across the world. Not as fast as Samsung has been able to do with Samsung Pay, but still, the company has been steadily working with a number of countries to make the service available for as many people as possible. Along with making the service available in countries from around the world, they've also been adding support for a large number of banks and credit unions in the United States.

Pali Bhat, the Senior Directory of Product Management at Google, has just announced the launch of Android Pay in Hong Kong. Google says their mobile payment service is now available in over 5,000 retail locations, and highlights stores including 7-Eleven, Circle K, Fortress, Mannings, Maxim's Cakes, MX, McDonald's, Pacific Coffee, PARKnSHOP, SmarTone, Watsons, and Wellcome.

Just like in other countries, those who choose to use the service in Hong Kong will also be able to store your gift cards, loyalty cards and other special offers directly within the app. Speaking of apps, Google says they have partnered with a number of popular apps within Hong Kong so they can integrate Android Pay as a payment option. Google highlights a few apps that have already integrated the service including Boutir Collect, Deliveroo, Kaligo, Klook, Snaptee, and also tells us that Uber will be adding support for Android Pay in Hong Kong soon.

We're told that Android Pay in Hong Kong works with Visa and MasterCard credit cards from banks including BEA, DBS, Dah Sing Bank, Hang Seng Bank, HSBC, and Standard Chartered Bank. Then reminds us that you can add an unlimited amount of credit cards to Android Pay, so you don't have to worry about carrying them around all the time. If you're curious about where you can use Android Pay in Hong Kong, be sure to check out Google's Where to Use page.

Winners Announced for Google’s Material Design Awards 2016

The introduction of Material Design marked the first time Google truly took a unified front when it comes to the design of all of their products. We're seeing Google services that haven't been updated in years receiving a coat of paint using the company's Material Design guidelines. Google has even started to recognize 3rd-party developers who are adopting the guidelines into their own applications in the Google Play Store.

Earlier this year at Google I/O 2016, Google highlighted the Robinhood application. The developers received the first ever Material Design Award for the Best Use of Material Design. Google says they want to continue to recognize developers who are using Material Design in unique and interesting ways. So this was the catalyst for the second annual Material Design Awards. One that would focus on very specific ways that Material Design was implemented into an application.

These 5 winners will be showcased at the SPAN LA conference on October 27th, and Google says they represent the best aspects of Material Design. First up is an application called Asana from the developers Asana, Inc, which won the Brand Infusion award for thinking the brand experience through when designing the app. Next up is an application called Fabulous, which won the Charming Engagement award for its unique illustration style.

Then we have a Japanese and Thai application called C Channel, that won the Creative Navigation Award for the way the developers organized their content in a series of tabs that can be navigated through via a series of swipes. The Kitchen Stores application won the Expressive Layouts award for their ability to create easy-to-scan layouts for recipes across a number of different screen sizes. Lastly we have Airbnb, which won the award for the Focused Efficiency category for how easy they made it to do things like signing in, browsing, and booking a reservation.

CBS Reportedly Signs on for Google’s Unplugged Web TV Service

There have been a number reports that talked about the possibility of Google launching their own online TV service. The service is said to be called Unplugged, but this could end up being changed before Google launches it. The latest report says the company is scheduled to launch the web TV service in "early 2017," and that it will be built off Google's very own YouTube platform. It's also said that Google will keep this new web TV service will likely be separate from the company's newly launched YouTube Red service.

We've been hearing these reports over the last year, but each time it was talked about the outlook did not look so good. The reports made it seem like Google was struggling to get TV studios on board with the service. We've actually seen this shift going on with Netflix, as the company has lost a lot of their library content thanks to contracts expiring and these studios launching their own online video service.

The latest news for Google's Unplugged TV service says that CBS has just signed on and will have their content available on the platform. The Wall Street Journal cites "people familiar with the matter" and says Google is currently in early negotiations with 21st Century Fox. The source also claims that Google is in advanced talks with both NBCUniversal and Disney. So far it is unclear if Google has been able to bring any other studios on board with the service.

The report talks about a small bundle of live TV channels will be available for a price of between $25 and $40. But Google is entering a crowded market of online video content with other companies like Hulu, Netflix and others already having matured platforms. On top of that, Hulu says they are planning on offering major broadcast networks and select cable channels for about $40 per month sometime next year.

Android 7.1 Developer Preview is now Available for the Nexus 5X/6P and the Pixel C

Google's Pixel and Pixel XL are finally making their way into the hands of many happy customers, providing users the first taste of Android 7.1 with some additional goodies over base Nougat. Fortunately for users of the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, or the Pixel C you will no longer have to wait to try out Android 7.1. As promised just last week, Google has announced that the first Android 7.1 Developer Preview will begin automatically rolling out to users on the aforementioned devices so long as you are enrolled in the Android Beta program. Alternatively, you can skip the wait and manually update your device by flashing the updated system images.

What's New

Android 7.1 introduces several new features which we're summarizing below:

  • App Shortcuts API – up to 5 intents can be launched withnin a menu accessed by long-pressing on an app's icon from the launcher
  • Image Keyboard Support – easily share images from your IME to any text input in your favorite app
  • Enhanced Live Wallpaper Metadata – wallpaper pickers can now display more detailed information while previewing the live wallpaper
  • Round Icon Resources – developers can now easily style their app icon to be rounded to fit in with the new Pixel Launcher
  • Storage Manager Intent – if running low on storage, apps can now directly guide user to the storage manager so they can quickly free up space
  • Improved VR Thread scheduling – developers can dedicate a single thread solely to handling the VR process, hopefully reducing latency
Image Keyboard App Shortcuts

The Android API level is also finally being bumped up to version 25 with this release, so if your device is running this latest preview you can start taking advantage of apps that are targeting API level 25, which includes Google Camera v4.2. Google has also opened up the ability for third-parties to start publishing apps in the Play Store under this new API level, so if you're a developer looking to build an app aimed at Pixel owners you can get started immediately with the updated development tools.

That's not all that's new, though. Google tends to not publish a fully comprehensive change-log for the Developer Preview, so there's always some goodies for users to discover once they've flashed the update. Here is a list of some new features that users are reporting on our forums. Keep in mind, though, that these features can be removed in a future update without notice:

  • Reboot option in power menu
  • Notification panel has space for an additional tile, and provides easier access to directly launch the settings app
  • Support tab in settings
  • New "Moves" menu in settings, which now holds all of the gesture-based options including Ambient Display, Double-Tap Power to launcher Camera, and Double Twist to switch between Cameras while in Google Camera
  • sRGB picture color mode in Developer Settings

As expected, the Pixel "exclusive" features such as Google Assistant and fingerprint gestures are not available in this Developer Preview. Of course, you can already try Assistant if you have root access on your phone but we'll have to wait and see if fingerprint gestures can feasibly be ported to other phones.

What's Next

Today marks the release of the first Preview for Google devices, specifically the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, and Pixel C. Google has promised a second Developer Preview sometime in November that will be available for the Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6X, Nexus Player, Nexus 9, Pixel C, and the General Mobile 4G. Finally, Android 7.1 Nougat will be officially released to the public via OTA update sometime in December to all of the aforementioned devices. If you are planning on running the developer preview, keep in mind that you may face issues with performance, battery life, or stability. You should be aware that Google does not intend for users to run these Developer Previews as a daily driver, so don't be surprised when something goes wrong. That being said, Google has provided a list of currently known issues:

  • System
    • Device may freeze when users are playing videos in multiple windows and change the volume.
  • Framework
    • Device with low storage stuck in boot loop animation on reboot.
    • Native crash in Bluetooth observed when trying to share a file from Files app.
  • Setup Wizard
    • Users setting up a factory-reset device and using Setup Wizard may experience minor issues with UI and functionality.
  • Backup and restore
    • After backup, launcher data and wallpapers may not be restored.

If you're brave enough to flash the Developer Preview, let us know if you find any additional new features below.
