If you have a Samsung Galaxy S II sitting in a drawer, check out AICP 12.0 based on Android 7.0 for the device! Bug list is restricted to issues with video recording and GPS.
While 4GB of RAM may seem as a standard for flagships that come out these days, a lot of companies have been bringing in devices with 6GB of RAM, even though their utilization of such large amounts of RAM may remain questionable. But still, as technology progresses, improvements to hardware will continue on driving what we are able to do with software.
With the same spirit, Samsung Electronics has launched the industry's first 8 Gigabyte LPDDR4 mobile DRAM package. This DRAM package is expected to be employed within mobile units, not restricted to smartphones, especially in devices with high resolution and large sized displays. The 8GB DRAM package makes use of four of Samsung's newest 16 gigabit LPDDR4 memory chips and 10nm-class process technology.
"The advent of our powerful 8GB mobile DRAM solution will enable more capable next-generation, flagship mobile devices around the world"
The 8GB LPDDR4 package has reported dimensions of under 15mm x 15mm x 1mm. The thin 1mm form factor enables stacking the package together with other components like UFS memory or the SoC, which aids the OEM in making a compact PCB.
While 8GB of RAM may seem overkill within current smartphone use scenarios, the wider proliferation of Virtual Reality, and the inevitable move up towards merging the smartphone and desktop experience does mean that we need hardware to move on faster before software can play catch up in order to provide an experience which does not feel straight out of a Beta. Having overkill hardware on critical components like the RAM help in making better use of newer technology like dual cameras, higher resolution and larger displays, Virtual Reality and even go on towards use cases that would involve running virtual machines right on our smartphones!
Samsung has not provided any timeline within which we can see this DRAM package available in retail devices. But it would not be far-fetched to expect a mobile device around mid-2017 that makes use of this new piece of technology.
Jide, the company behind the Android-based Remix OS, has announced their latest venture into hardware. Starting at $99 the Remix IO is designed to be a TV set-top box, console, and PC all in one device centred around the latest version of Remix OS/Android 7.0 which boasts 4K output at 60fps and HDR support.
Jide has always been community focused which is one of the reasons they house their forums here at XDA, their staff patrol the various remix sub-forums listening to feedback and offering assistance where needed. It was this relationship with their users and the feedback provided which has lead to them developing their unique TV mode interface based on the interests of the community. The ability to switch between TV and PC mode is definitely an interesting move which allows the device to run apps designed for both regular Android and Android TV and intelligently choose which to use at any given time. As you can imagine, playing games designed for a touch screen with a controller or mice and Keyboard has never been an easy feat; Remix OS allows you to map touch controls to keyboard, mouse, and game controller inputs, making the entire process simpler.
"Jide's community has been an important part of the company growth and Remix OS' development since we launched it to the world in March 2015. Their support meant that our previous Remix Mini campaign was a resounding success, and raised over US$1.6m on Kickstarter. Our new campaign is a way for us to go back to where it all started and offer our three million Remix OS users a Kickstarter exclusive on the new Remix IO"
Remix IO is available to back on Kickstarter now starting at $99 and will ship to backers worldwide in March 2017

Google has been rapidly expanding the availability of their mobile payments service across the world. Not as fast as Samsung has been able to do with Samsung Pay, but still, the company has been steadily working with a number of countries to make the service available for as many people as possible. Along with making the service available in countries from around the world, they've also been adding support for a large number of banks and credit unions in the United States.
Pali Bhat, the Senior Directory of Product Management at Google, has just announced the launch of Android Pay in Hong Kong. Google says their mobile payment service is now available in over 5,000 retail locations, and highlights stores including 7-Eleven, Circle K, Fortress, Mannings, Maxim's Cakes, MX, McDonald's, Pacific Coffee, PARKnSHOP, SmarTone, Watsons, and Wellcome.
Just like in other countries, those who choose to use the service in Hong Kong will also be able to store your gift cards, loyalty cards and other special offers directly within the app. Speaking of apps, Google says they have partnered with a number of popular apps within Hong Kong so they can integrate Android Pay as a payment option. Google highlights a few apps that have already integrated the service including Boutir Collect, Deliveroo, Kaligo, Klook, Snaptee, and also tells us that Uber will be adding support for Android Pay in Hong Kong soon.
We're told that Android Pay in Hong Kong works with Visa and MasterCard credit cards from banks including BEA, DBS, Dah Sing Bank, Hang Seng Bank, HSBC, and Standard Chartered Bank. Then reminds us that you can add an unlimited amount of credit cards to Android Pay, so you don't have to worry about carrying them around all the time. If you're curious about where you can use Android Pay in Hong Kong, be sure to check out Google's Where to Use page.
The introduction of Material Design marked the first time Google truly took a unified front when it comes to the design of all of their products. We're seeing Google services that haven't been updated in years receiving a coat of paint using the company's Material Design guidelines. Google has even started to recognize 3rd-party developers who are adopting the guidelines into their own applications in the Google Play Store.
Earlier this year at Google I/O 2016, Google highlighted the Robinhood application. The developers received the first ever Material Design Award for the Best Use of Material Design. Google says they want to continue to recognize developers who are using Material Design in unique and interesting ways. So this was the catalyst for the second annual Material Design Awards. One that would focus on very specific ways that Material Design was implemented into an application.
These 5 winners will be showcased at the SPAN LA conference on October 27th, and Google says they represent the best aspects of Material Design. First up is an application called Asana from the developers Asana, Inc, which won the Brand Infusion award for thinking the brand experience through when designing the app. Next up is an application called Fabulous, which won the Charming Engagement award for its unique illustration style.
Then we have a Japanese and Thai application called C Channel, that won the Creative Navigation Award for the way the developers organized their content in a series of tabs that can be navigated through via a series of swipes. The Kitchen Stores application won the Expressive Layouts award for their ability to create easy-to-scan layouts for recipes across a number of different screen sizes. Lastly we have Airbnb, which won the award for the Focused Efficiency category for how easy they made it to do things like signing in, browsing, and booking a reservation.
There have been a number reports that talked about the possibility of Google launching their own online TV service. The service is said to be called Unplugged, but this could end up being changed before Google launches it. The latest report says the company is scheduled to launch the web TV service in "early 2017," and that it will be built off Google's very own YouTube platform. It's also said that Google will keep this new web TV service will likely be separate from the company's newly launched YouTube Red service.
We've been hearing these reports over the last year, but each time it was talked about the outlook did not look so good. The reports made it seem like Google was struggling to get TV studios on board with the service. We've actually seen this shift going on with Netflix, as the company has lost a lot of their library content thanks to contracts expiring and these studios launching their own online video service.
The latest news for Google's Unplugged TV service says that CBS has just signed on and will have their content available on the platform. The Wall Street Journal cites "people familiar with the matter" and says Google is currently in early negotiations with 21st Century Fox. The source also claims that Google is in advanced talks with both NBCUniversal and Disney. So far it is unclear if Google has been able to bring any other studios on board with the service.
The report talks about a small bundle of live TV channels will be available for a price of between $25 and $40. But Google is entering a crowded market of online video content with other companies like Hulu, Netflix and others already having matured platforms. On top of that, Hulu says they are planning on offering major broadcast networks and select cable channels for about $40 per month sometime next year.
