Google Maps gets integrated menu scanning from Google Lens

Last year, at Google I/O 2019, the company announced a new menu scanning feature for Google Lens. Users can open Lens and scan physical menus at restaurants to get additional information, such as highlighting popular dishes. This same feature is now being integrated into the Google Maps app.

Google Maps is a great tool for finding restaurants and it already gives you a lot of handy information. One of those handy features is the ability to see photos from other customers, which can sometimes include photos of the physical menus. This is super helpful if the restaurant still doesn’t have menus posted on their website. You can now tap the Google Lens suggestion to “Explore dishes” when viewing these menus in Google Maps.

Google Lens will highlight popular dishes and allow you to highlight text. This can bring up additional information, including photos of the dishes on the menu. You can tap on the dishes to get even more information. There is also a Lens icon in the top right corner when browsing user photos in Google Maps if you’d like to scan the physical menu while you’re at the restaurant.

This is a great example of Google integrating their apps in a useful manner. People already use Google Maps for restaurants, so it makes complete sense to bring this Lens feature over. The Google Lens integration is rolling out now for the Google Maps Android app.

[Update: Available Now] TicWatch Pro 2020 is Mobvoi’s latest Wear OS smartwatch with 1GB RAM and a dual display

Update (3/9/20 @ 12:05 PM ET): The TicWatch Pro 2020 is now available for purchase and 10% off for a limited time.

There are a few companies still dedicated to pumping out Wear OS smartwatches. One of those companies is Mobvoi, who has released some of the best devices the platform has to offer. Mobvoi released the TicWatch Pro in 2018 with premium specifications and some clever tricks. Last year, the company released an LTE version of the TicWatch Pro. Today, Mobvoi is announcing its latest device, the TicWatch Pro 2020.

You may remember that the TicWatch Pro LTE looked essentially the same as the original TicWatch Pro. However, besides LTE support, it did have a few important upgrades. The TicWatch Pro 2020 has the same upgrades as the LTE model, but this is considered an update to the original WiFi-only TicWatch Pro from 2018. It does not have LTE support.

The biggest upgrade from the original TicWatch Pro is RAM. The 2020 model has double the RAM as the original, putting it at 1GB. This is actually a pretty big deal for Wear OS devices. Wear OS is known for being sluggish, and as I stated in my review of the LTE model, the extra RAM makes a big difference. The 2020 model also has 4GB of internal storage and it’s powered by the Snapdragon Wear 2100 chipset (still no 3100).

Another upgrade over the original TicWatch Pro is the MIL-STD-810G durability rating. The original was only IP68 certified, which the 2020 model is as well. The military standard rating means it can withstand temperature shock of between -22°F and 158°F, remain operational between -4°F and 131°F, 57kpa pressure, 111°F solar radiation, 95% humidity, salt fog, sand, dust, and shock.

You can’t talk about the TicWatch Pro without mentioning the dual-layer display. Mobvoi introduced this on the original TicWatch Pro and the 2020 model has the same great feature. The dual-layer display gives you an extra LCD display on top of the AMOLED display. That extra display essentially acts as your “always-on” display, but it requires very little power. You can squeeze up to 30-days of battery life out of the watch if you heavily rely on the extra display.

Design-wise not much has changed from the original TicWatch Pro. In fact, I can’t really find any differences in the design. The LTE model had knurling around the bezel and buttons, but the 2020 model goes back to the smooth finish of the original. There are two color options to choose from: Black and Silver. There are also several leather and silicone bands to choose from.

The TicWatch Pro 2020 will first roll out in the UK with a price of £222.99. It is available now to purchase in the UK from Mobvoi’s official website and Amazon UK. In the US, the watch will be available in early March for $259.99 on Mobvoi’s website and Amazon.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite update adds 4K@60fps video recording and other camera improvements

Samsung launched two sub-premium phones – the Galaxy S10 Lite and the Galaxy Note 10 Lite – in January. The two phones are pitted against flagship killers like the OnePlus 7T but each of them serves different audiences. The Galaxy S10 Lite is targetted at users who want flagship-grade performance but some compromises in areas like design whereas the Note 10 Lite is aimed at users who want the S-Pen experience at a lower price.

We recently reviewed the Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite and found it to offer a striking value for money, especially for users who prefer buying Samsung devices. While its 48MP camera and the Super Steady OIS mode are made to impress, the phone lacked certain features in the video department. That has been rectified with the latest update which adds 4K video recording at 60fps to the S10 Lite (SM-G770F). Besides this, the update also brings improvements to the camera quality and stability.

The changelog also mentions Super Steady mode for UHD (4K) video recording but we found that wasn’t working on our unit. When selected, the Super Steady mode switches back to 1080p mode automatically and the option to select the video quality is disabled. We reached out to Samsung for clarity on this and will update the article as per their response.

Besides camera improvements, the update also brings improvements to the performance of the in-display optical fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy S10 Lite. Other than that, there are improvements to the overall stability of the UI. Lastly, the update also brings Google’s security patches from February 2020.

The update is about 420MB in size and started rolling out in India last week. The rollout should be incremental based on your region. Since the Galaxy S10 Lite does not have separate Snapdragon and Exynos variants, the rollout can be expected to be smoother and quicker.

[Update: New Home Screen] Spotify will get a refreshed mobile UI on Android and iOS

Update (3/9/20 @ 10:00 AM ET): Spotify is now rolling out a redesigned home screen UI to its mobile apps.

Spotify is undoubtedly one of the most popular music streaming services out there, but it faces strong competition from the likes of YouTube Music and Apple Music internationally, and services like JioSaavn in India. In order to stay ahead of the competition, the service keeps introducing new features ever so often. Most recently, Spotify reintroduced its widget for Android users, which was previously deprecated in a feature update. Now, in a bid to keep up with the times, Spotify is releasing a refreshed mobile UI for Android and iOS.

As per a recent blog post from the company, the refreshed UI brings some significant changes that are expected to improve the way users listen to music on Spotify. These include a new universal Shuffle Play button that aims to streamline audio streaming on the platform to a single click.

Along with that, there’s a redesigned Action row that houses all actions, including ‘like’, ‘play, and ‘download’, grouped together in the central part of the app. The action bar also houses a new downloading for listening without WiFi for premium users, which looks a lot like the one that the app has been using for podcasts. What’s really interesting is that the new Action row has an adaptive design that responds to the size of each device for easier one-handed use.

Furthermore, the UI redesign now also shows cover art in all views except the ‘Album’ view, which is expected to make navigating through the app and looking for familiar songs a bit easier. For previously liked songs, the cover art will also show a heart icon next to the track name. The new UI redesign is already rolling out for iOS users, but Spotify hasn’t revealed any timeline for the Android release. In a statement to 9to5Google, the company just said that the redesign is “coming soon” to Android.

Update: New Home Screen

After adding a few new UI elements to Android and iOS last month, Spotify is now rolling out a revamped home screen. The new UI is designed to make it easier for users to quickly jump back into familiar content. There is a new section at the top with recommendations that change throughout the day based on your routines.

Under the new recommendations area is where you’ll find your “Made for You” playlists, recommendations based on your listening, top podcasts, and more. You’ll also notice that everything is more compact now, which allows more content to be displayed on the screen. This update is rolling out now as a server-side switch, so keep an eye on your Spotify app.

Xiaomi shuts down its only Mi Store in the UK

Xiaomi is younger than a lot of other smartphone brands but it has become the preferred choice for the majority of Asian consumers.  In Western markets like Europe and the US, the company can be seen growing very well, especially due to the high value that phones under its spin-off brand Redmi offer. Xiaomi ventured into the UK almost two years ago, starting with a partnership with local telco Three followed by the opening of a retail store in London. Unfortunately for Xiaomi fans, though, the first and the only offline Mi store in the UK has been shut down by the company.

The Xiaomi store, which was located in London’s Sheperd’s Bush area in the Westfield shopping center, has now officially confirmed to have been shut down. Westfield’s website confirms the news while the now-defunct Twitter handle for Mi Store London reaffirms it.

According to a Xiaomi spokesperson, the shutdown is in line with the company’s updated retail strategy for the region. All of the products will continue to be available online through Xiaomi’s UK website and partner e-commerce platforms like Amazon UK.

In an official statement to Android Authority, Xiaomi said, “This adjustment to our local retail strategy is a reaction to our fast growing business in Western Europe. Since our official arrival in the UK over one year ago, we have loved building relationships with our users, Mi Fans and partners and thank them all for their support. UK users and Mi Fans can continue to purchase Xiaomi products through our official website mi.com/uk and other official channels that will be announced along with our product launches in the future.”

Since its launch in November 2018, the Mi Store in London was the one-stop-shop for not just Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO smartphones but also audio accessories, wearables, smart home products, and unusual Xiaomi products like electric scooters and screwdrivers, umbrellas, bags and luggage, electric toothbrushes, etc. Fortunately, most of the products are still available online.
