HMD Global rolls out the Android 10 update for the Nokia 2.2

Google’s Android One ecosystem is still alive thanks to HMD Global, as the Nokia brand has earned a very good reputation among Android purists. Nokia phones receive regular security updates regardless of the price tag, and Android 10 is already available for a bunch of mid-range Nokia phones, such as the Nokia 6.1, Nokia 6.1 Plus, and Nokia 7 Plus. As per the revised update schedule shared by the company earlier this month, HMD Global has now started rolling out the Android 10 update to the entry-level Nokia 2.2.

HMD Global’s Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas has announced on Twitter the arrival of the Android 10 update for the Nokia 2.2. It is worth noting that this particular phone was launched with a promise to be the cheapest phone to secure the Android 10 OTA in due time. The Nokia 2.2 is also eligible to get three years’ worth of monthly security updates and two years of OS upgrades, which means that owners of this phone should be able to get a taste of Android 11 as well in the future.

The version number of the new firmware is V2.300, which is a steep hike from the last Android Pie-based build (V1.63E) for the Nokia 2.2. It is about 1.1GB in size and the update brings all the new features introduced with Android 10, including enhanced dark mode, gesture navigations, and privacy controls. However, HMD Global decided to ship one-month-old February 2020 security patches with this OTA, which is a rather disappointing move.

The Nokia 2.2 already has a successor, the Nokia 2.3, which is scheduled to receive the Android 10 update very soon. Both of them are powered by the MediaTek Helio A22 chip, which is apparently vulnerable to a critical security exploit dubbed as MediaTek-su (formerly known as CVE-2020-0069). Fortunately the vulnerability can’t be exploitable under Android 10 due to a new SELinux policy, thus the Nokia 2.2 is now out of the danger zone.

Samsung Galaxy A50 and Galaxy M30s receive Android 10 with One UI 2.0

Samsung kickstarted the Android 10-based One UI 2.0 rollout via an introductory beta program back in October 2019. While several devices from the flagship Galaxy S and Note lineup were part of the initiative, the company did not include Galaxy M series as well as Galaxy A series of smartphones under the beta program. Interestingly, the Indian variant of the Galaxy M20 and Galaxy M30 directly received the stable version of One UI 2.0 out of the blue in December. Since then, Samsung has extended the stable rollout to a number of mid-ranger devices in the Galaxy M and the Galaxy A lineup. Now, the company is reportedly rolling out the One UI 2.0 update for the Galaxy M30s and the Galaxy A50.

The update for the Galaxy M30s (SM-M307F variant to be precise) is currently available only in India and it carries the version number M307FXXU2BTC6. Samsung has not incremented the bootloader version (v2), thus it is possible to revert back to Android Pie though manual flashing. Regarding the Android Security Patch Level (SPL), it is the same March 2020 one found in the last Android Pie firmware, i.e. build M307FXXS2ATB3.

The Galaxy A50 update story, on the other hand, is quite different. Two different variants of this popular phone – SM-A505F in India and SM-A505N in South Korea – are getting two separate builds of One UI 2.0. The former is being served with software version A505FDDU4BTC4 along with February 2020 patches, while the Korean model has picked up build A505NKSU3BTC3 with the security patch level of March 2020. Thanks to the unchanged bootloader version in both the cases, the owners of the Galaxy A50 are free to downgrade if required, though we would still advise caution.

The One UI 2.0 layer found in the Galaxy M30s lacks a few ‘premium’ features, which are fortunately present in the Galaxy A50 firmware. Nevertheless, several new functionalities, such as an improved Dark mode, revamped camera UI and Focus Mode support in Digital Wellbeing are now available to the owners of these phones. Tools like Frija can be handy, if you want to download the updated firmware packages right away from the Samsung server.

Samsung is killing its PC-to-phone game streaming service “PlayGalaxy Link”

With the launch of the Galaxy Note 10 series last year, Samsung announced a new feature called PlayGalaxy Link. The feature, which was essentially a rebrand of a service called Parsec, allowed you to stream games from your PC to your phone. At the time, the service was only available for the Galaxy Note 10 series, but Samsung gradually rolled out support for more devices, including the Galaxy S10 series, the Galaxy Fold, Galaxy S9 series, Galaxy Note 9, and the Galaxy A90. While the feature was really great for gamers, it seems like Samsung didn’t get the response it was looking for and has now planned to do away with it altogether.

As per a recent report from Engadget, Samsung plans to shut down the PlayGalaxy Link service on March 27th. The report cites a notice on the PlayGalaxy website which states that, “After many difficult decisions, PlayGalaxy Link will be ended on 27 March 2020 due to internal policy changes.” Interestingly, Samsung posted the notice towards the end of February and released minor changes in the server and client for the end of service earlier this month. The company also ended the image download function in auto game search and has confirmed that it has no plans to bring the service back anytime soon. OPPO Reno3 launches internationally with the MediaTek Helio P90

Chinese smartphone manufacturer OPPO launched the Reno3 and Reno3 Pro in China back in December last year. The mid-range Reno3 and Reno3 Pro featured MediaTek’s Dimensity 1000L chipset and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G SoC, respectively. However, when the company launched the Reno3 Pro internationally earlier this month, it packed in MediaTek’s Helio P95 chipset, instead of the Snapdragon 765G. Not only that, but the device also had some major differences in the camera department from its Chinese counterpart and it featured a 64MP primary sensor, instead of the 48MP sensor on the Chinese variant. Now, OPPO has finally launched the Reno3 internationally and it too isn’t the same as the device launched in China.

As per a recent report from NDTV Gadgets360, the international variant of the Reno3 packs in a MediaTek Helio P90 SoC instead of the Dimensity 1000L chip. While its design largely remains the same, it also has some major differences in the camera department. While the Chinese variant of the Reno3 featured a quad-camera setup with a 64MP Sony IMX 686 primary sensor, the international variant packs in a 48MP primary sensor, along with a 13MP telephoto zoom lens, an 8MP wide-angle sensor, and a 2MP monochrome sensor for depth perception. On the front, the international variant of the Reno3 features a 44MP selfie camera housed within the waterdrop-style notch, which is a decent step up from the 32MP selfie camera on the Chinese variant.

Powering the Reno3 is a 4,025mAh battery with support for VOOC 3.0 Flash Charge and much like the Chinese variant, it features a 6.4-inch FHD+ display with a fingerprint scanner built-in. Unlike the Chinese variant, however, the international Reno3 only features up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. In terms of connectivity, the Reno3 includes 4G LTE, Bluetooth 5.0, WiFi, GPS/A-GPS, and a USB Type-C port for charging and data syncing. The device runs OPPO’s ColorOS 7 based on Android 10. As of now, we have no information on international pricing, but considering the fact that it doesn’t feature the more premium Dimensity 1000L chip, the Reno3 is expected to feature a price tag lesser than its Chinese counterpart which starts at CNY 3,399 (~$485). The report further adds that the device is currently listed on OPPO Sri Lanka’s website in two color variants — Auroral Blue and Midnight Black.

New leaked render shows Honor 30S in Orange and White colors, side fingerprint scanner

Just yesterday we saw some of the first pictures of the new Honor 30S along with some more information regarding the device, like the new HiSilicon Kirin 820 5G chipset. The phone appears to be a mid-range offshoot of the Honor V30 flagship. Thanks to our sources, we now have more information about this device along with more images of the device in new color variants.

The first thing to mention is the specs. The Honor 30S will run the Kirin 820 5G. This is Huawei’s mid-range SoC. It will have 5G support, which is good for future-proofing the device. Mid-range processors have gotten very good over the past years, so not packing a flagship SoC no longer automatically casts doubt on performance, so don’t worry about that. The Honor 30S will also support 40W fast charging, which in my experience is very fast. The phone will also have a side-mounted capacitive fingerprint scanner, as we can see in the image of the white device.

As for the images, below is the first image we received. It shows off the rear camera setup and the new orange color. The orange looks to have some sort of shift pattern in it. In our image of the white model, it does look pretty white with the same pattern. There are some blues, greens, and purples reflecting throughout the render, so it might have a slight gradient as well.

As for the camera, the physical camera setup looks very similar to the Honor View 30. The only difference being this device actually has another hole below the flash. This could be anything from a Time-of-Flight sensor to a microphone to autofocus sensors. We just can’t conclude from the image. To that point, even though the setup looks similar, the sensors and specs of the camera could be different. We will have to wait for the official launch to get more information about the camera.

All in all, this device looks pretty great from design to specification standpoint. I’m excited to see all the official information about this device as soon as it launches. It is rumored to launch for around $350-400 which is fair for the design and specs of the device, especially since it will include a 5G chipset.

Redmi K30 Pro launches March 24th with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage

Late last year in December, Xiaomi launched the mid-range Redmi K30 series in China with a 120Hz high refresh rate display, Snapdragon 765G, and a 64MP Sony IMX 686 primary camera. However, the company didn’t launch a ‘Pro’ variant and left fans wondering if a new affordable flagship was even on the cards. Then, earlier this year in February we first saw evidence of an upcoming Snapdragon 865-powered device from Redmi, which led us to believe that the company might launch a Redmi K30 Pro after all. Later in the month, the company finally released an official teaser for the Redmi K30 Pro and confirmed that it will feature Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 865 chip. But the company released no information regarding the release date at the time.

Now, in a recent string of posts on Weibo, the company has announced a release date for the device, along with a few key specifications. As per the posts, the Redmi K30 Pro will be launched in China on March 24th and, as previously speculated, the device will feature Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 865 SoC. Redmi’s President Lu Weibing has also shared a teaser poster for the upcoming device which confirms that the device will feature 5G support, UFS 3.1 storage, and LPDDR5 RAM.

Interestingly, Weibing made the aforementioned post using the Redmi K30 Pro Zoom — a variant of the upcoming Redmi K30 Pro that we previously spotted in an MIUI 11 China Developer ROM. It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Weibing has posted from the “Zoom” variant of the Redmi K30 Pro.

While we still don’t have any information about the upcoming Zoom variant of the Redmi K30 Pro, we can safely assume that it will feature a slightly better camera setup with optical zoom capabilities. While Redmi has released no further information about the upcoming devices yet, we expect the company to roll out a couple of more teasers with additional information in the days leading up to the launch.

[Update: More renders] Motorola Edge+ leaked renders show off waterfall display and triple cameras

Motorola (owned by Lenovo) has been doing a bang-up job in the low-end and mid-range smartphone segment. The Moto G7 series was very successful, and they’ve followed it up with the Moto G8 series. However, the company is set to return to the flagship market this year with the Motorola Edge+. We’re getting a new look at the device thanks to some leaked renders.

We exclusively reported on two Motorola devices 5G and 90Hz waterfall displays last month. At the time, we didn’t have a confirmed name for either model, but we’ve since discovered the flagship model will be called the Motorola Edge+. We also had a few real-life photos of the upper mid-range Motorola device that will share the same design as the Edge+. Today, we’re getting our first look at the Edge+ itself through some renders.

The leaked renders give us a much clearer look at the Motorola Edge+. The front of the phone features a small hole-punch in the top left corner and a display that wraps dramatically around the edges. This matches up perfectly with what we saw from the other 5G Moto phone. Around back, we can see the three cameras arranged in a vertical stack and an LED ring around the Motorola logo.

The bottom edge of the phone features a USB-C port and a speaker grill. Surprisingly for a flagship phone, the top edge looks to have a 3.5mm headphone jack. There is said to be an under-display fingerprint scanner as well. Unlike some previous phones with waterfall displays, the Motorola Edge+ appears to still have physical volume and power buttons.

There aren’t any new specifications to note from this report, but we can recap what we know already. The display is 6.67-inches with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 and 90Hz refresh rate. It will be powered by the Snapdragon 865 with support for 5G. The device will have 8 or 12GB of RAM, a 5,169mAh battery, and Android 10. There’s still a lot we don’t know about this upcoming device.
