[Update: Italian] Google Translate’s real-time translation feature is rolling out now

Update (5/21/20 @ 10:55 AM ET): Google Translate adds Italian to the real-time translation feature.

A few months ago, Google started work on a new feature in Translate called “Continuous Translation.” This feature was eventually shown off to the public in January earlier this year, but now it’s finally ready for primetime. The feature is now called “Transcribe” and it will be rolling out to Google Translate for Android in the next few days.

In a nutshell, Transcribe allows you to record spoken words in one language and have them translated on your phone in near real-time. The use cases for this are easy to see. You can translate your own speech, someone who is speaking to you, or hold it up to a computer speaker or TV. The translation happens without any noticeable processing delay.

This differs from Google Translate’s current transcription feature that requires you to input text or voice and then wait for a translation. Google says that “wasn’t well suited to listen[ing] to a longer translated discussion at a conference, a classroom lecture or a video of a lecture, a story from a grandparent, etc.”

Using the new feature is pretty straightforward. When you open Google Translate for Android, you’ll see a new “Transcribe” button under the text box. Tap this and you’ll be brought to the Listen page where you can select the languages. Just tap the microphone icon to start listening or to pause translation. At launch, Transcribe supports English, French, German, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Thai.

Update: Italian

Google Translate’s live-transcription feature started rolling out in March with support for 8 languages. That number is now 9 as Italian has been added to the list. Simply go to the Transcribe section and select Italian.

Google Play Movies adds its first Dolby Vision HDR titles

Earlier this year, Google announced support for HDR content on Google Play Movies & TV. The company specifically mentioned HDR10+, but we knew it was preparing to support Dolby Vision HDR as well. Today, we’re seeing a batch of Dolby Vision HDR titles available on the platform.

Joker and A Simple Favor are the first two Dolby Vision HDR titles on Google Play Movies. It appears that Google is preparing to announce official support as there is a “Top Dolby Vision movies” section when you search for “Dolby.” Play Movies is still well behind other platforms when it comes to HDR content. Apple currently offers over 600 DV titles.

So what exactly is Dolby Vision and how does it compare to HDR10+? Dolby Vision is a proprietary standard for HDR, whereas HDR10+ is a royalty-free standard. Dolby Vision has a slightly higher bit depth, which measures the number of graduations of colors in an image. That slightly higher bit depth, however, makes for a huge difference in colors. Dolby Vision can display 68.7 billion colors compared to HDR10+’s 1.07 billion. Overall, DV is better than HDR10+ across the board.

Regardless of the best standard, it’s great to see Google Play Movies finally get more HDR content. With a possible rebrand and refocusing on Android TV on the horizon, it’s important for Google’s in-house content store to offer the best quality possible. The company still has a long way to go to compete with Apple and Amazon, but you have to start somewhere.

Download the LG Velvet wallpapers in Full HD (2460×1080)

Just a few days ago, LG took the stage to unveil the LG Velvet, a mid-range smartphone under a new branding that replaces the long-standing LG G series. The non-flagship tag is evident in the sense that the device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 SoC instead of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. Featuring an all-new design language that is quite different from LG’s current portfolio, the LG Velvet comes with a special digitizer in its display that enables Wacom stylus support with up to 4096 pressure levels.

The LG Velvet is currently available in South Korea, but in case you find the new design language pleasing, you can at least get a glimpse of the new experience on your existing hardware by downloading the stock wallpapers. These are extracted from the Korean firmware of the device. You can check out the set of colorful, vibrant wallpapers from LG’s newest smartphone.

Instead of grabbing them individually, you can also download all of the stock wallpapers together using the ZIP linked below, thanks to MyLGPhones. NVIDIA adds Divinity: Original Sin and 16 other games to GeForce NOW

NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW game-streaming service enjoys its share in the now-crowded game streaming market on the fact that it was one of the first to appear for end consumers. The service started beta testing for Android last year and opened up for everyone in February. NVIDIA had pledged to announce new games for GeForce NOW every week, and over the past weeks, it has kept to that promise on multiple occasions. In May, NVIDIA added 19 games in the first week, and another 18 in the second week, to its cloud gaming library. For this week, we get 17 additions to the growing game library on GeForce NOW.

GeForce NOW  incorporates technology that utilizes AI and RTX GPUs to enable “the next generation of performance and visuals”. It’s NVIDIA’s improved deep learning neural network that “boosts frame rates while generating beautiful, sharp images for games”. Since the base technology is game streaming, games begin playing instantly when you fire them up. They also include an experience that has been optimized for cloud gaming and includes Game Ready Driver performance improvements, managed directly by NVIDIA.

Here is the complete list of new games that have been added to GeForce NOW this week:

  • Hunting Simulator 2
  • Observation
  • REZ PLZ
  • The Wonderful 101: Remastered
  • Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
  • Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition
  • Driftland: The Magic Revival
  • Furi
  • GUILTY GEAR Xrd -SIGN10. Jagged Alliance – Back in Action
  • Kingdom: Classic
  • Lords Of The Fallen
  • Might & Magic Heroes VII – Trial by Fire
  • Occupy White Walls
  • Syberia 3
  • Wargame: Airland Battle
  • X Rebirth

Of these, Hunting Simulator 2 and REZ PLZ are launching on PC on Steam today itself. Observation is also a new launch on the Steam Store for today. The Wonderful 101: Remastered is also a new game release on Steam for this week, so you do have fresh content to try even this week.

Update 2 (05/21/2020 @ 8:15 AM ET): The LG V35 ThinQ has received stable Android 10 update on AT&T.

Update 1 (05/18/2020 @ 9:10 AM ET): LG is rolling out stable Android 10 for the LG G7 ThinQ and the LG V50s ThinQ. Scroll to the bottom for more information. The article as published on May 15, 2020, is preserved below.

The original LG G8 ThinQ received its Android 10 update back in December 2019 while the “Dual Screen” compatible LG G8X ThinQ is scheduled to get its Android 10 update in Q2 2020. Carrier models usually face delayed updates compared to their unlocked counterparts, but the recent Android 10 update rollout for the AT&T LG V40 ThinQ and the current rollout for the Sprint G8X are indeed some noteworthy exceptions. Despite no official announcement, multiple users on our forums confirm that they have received the OTA. The new build brings the usual Android 10 goodies such as full-screen gestures and system-wide dark mode. We don’t know the Android security patch level at this time, though. LG has also published the Android 10 kernel source for this variant (LM-G850UM9) on their code repository which corresponds to software version G850U20a.

That’s not the end of the story, though, as the Korean OEM decided to release the Linux kernel source code for the upcoming Android 10 updates for two more devices – the LG V35 ThinQ (LM-V350N/NO/NOS) and the LG V50s ThinQ (LM-V510N/NX/NOX). Both of them should receive their taste of Android 10 pretty soon as per the latest update timeline published by LG.

Lastly, we have the kernel source code for the yet-to-be-announced LG Stylo 6. OPPO Find X2 Pro, Neo, and Lite are now available in Germany with free Bluetooth audio accessories as bonuses

OPPO was expected to debut its Find X2 series at the MWC 2020 trade show earlier this year. However, due to the rising COVID-19 concerns, the event was canceled and OPPO postponed the launch to a later date. The Find X2 and Find X2 Pro were then revealed early in March this year, with the OPPO Find X2 Lite joining the lineup later in April. Now, according to a recent report from GSMArena, the company has launched the Find X2 Pro and Find X2 Lite in Germany, along with the new Find X2 Neo.

OPPO Find X2 Pro

The device features a 6.4inch FHD+ AMOLED display and a 4,025mAh battery with support for 30W fast wired charging.

OPPO Find X2 Neo

The new OPPO Find X2 Neo, which is a rebranded Chinese Reno3 Pro 5G, also features the Snapdragon 765G chipset, coupled with up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The device features a 6.5-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, a quad-camera setup with a 48MP primary sensor, and a 4,025mAh battery.

Pricing and Availability

The OPPO Find X2 Pro, Find X2 Neo, and Find X2 Lite are up for preorders across various eCommerce platforms in the country. The pricing details are as follows:
