Spotify gets rid of its 10,000 song limit cap for your Library

Like many streaming services, Spotify has a few limits, even for paying customers. One of those limits was a 10,000 song cap on Library sizes. Users have been clamoring for this limit to be removed for years – a request started in 2014 has over 12,500 votes. Spotify has finally relented and started rolling out an “unlimited library” experience.

Before now, it was only possible to save 10,000 items in your Library. If you ran into this limit, a message would pop up that said “Epic collection my friend. There’s no more room in Your Library. To save more, you’ll need to remove some songs or albums”. This was especially annoying for anyone who was paying for Spotify Premium. Thankfully, that limit is gone now.

The new “unlimited library” means you can like/save as many song and albums as you want. There are still a few other limitations in place. First, users are still limited to downloading 10,000 songs per device for a max of 5 devices. Playlists are still limited to 10,000 items.

Spotify also says you may see the error message for a few more days, but it’s rolling out right now. It always felt kinda arbitrary to have a limit for how many songs could be saved to your Library. Spotify themselves once said only 1% of users actually reached the limit. Now, those few people can like/save to their heart’s content.

Google and T-Mobile join up to make RCS support work better across carriers

The rollout of RCS support in the US has been pretty messy. Back in November, Google took matters into its own hands and enabled RCS support for everyone in the US using the Messages app. That was a big step, but it didn’t solve all the problems. Today, Google and T-Mobile announced a joint effort that makes RCS work better across carriers.

T-Mobile has been one of the better US carriers when it comes to supporting RCS. Before today, RCS was supported between T-Mobile branded devices. However, if a T-Mobile user sent a message to someone who was not on T-Mobile, there was no RCS support. Starting today, any T-Mobile user sending a message to a user of any other carrier will enjoy the benefits of RCS.

There is some small print for the situation: this only applies to Android devices and the non-T-Mobile user must be using the Google Messages app. The T-Mobile user can choose the SMS app of their choice (assuming it supports RCS), but the receiver must be using Google’s app. Of course, if both people were using the Messages app before, RCS was already supported.

This announcement is a big deal, though, because a lot of people don’t go out of their way to change the default SMS app. For example, anyone that buys a Samsung phone from T-Mobile will be using the Samsung Messaging app. Unless you buy a Google Pixel phone from T-Mobile, the default SMS app is likely from the phone manufacturer. Relying on the receiver to use Google Messages still means people have to go out of their way to change the default SMS app, but now there’s no pressure on the T-Mobile users.

T-Mobile points out that it is the “first in the world to implement a full standards-based RCS Universal Profile 1.0 interconnect with Google’s Messages service. ” Hopefully, more carriers are ready to jump on board.

Huawei P30 and P30 Pro are getting their stable EMUI 10.1 updates globally

The Huawei P40 lineup comes with EMUI 10.1 out of the box, which is a slightly updated version of Huawei’s EMUI 10 software built on top of Android 10. A bunch of older devices from Huawei’s portfolio are also scheduled to get EMUI 10.1. The Huawei P30, Huawei Mate 30, and Huawei Nova 5T users across the globe, for example, received the global beta build of EMUI 10.1 around a month ago. While the Chinese OEM is planning to deliver the stable build to the Huawei Mate 30 series sometime next month, the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro are now receiving their stable EMUI 10.1 update in several European countries.

The version number of the new firmware is 10.1.0.123, and it brings in features like enhanced Always-on Display (AOD) clock styles and new fingerprint scanner animations. Huawei is also merging the latest May 2020 security patches in this update. There seems to be no prior requirement of enrolling in the initial beta testing phase to get this update as users in Spain, France, and Germany are able to download the massive OTA (around 4.59GB) through the Huawei Support app.

Interestingly, the so-called “New Edition” of the Huawei P30 Pro ships with factory-installed EMUI 10.1 which might be the reason for the quick availability of the 10.1 update to the regular P30/P30 Pro. However, Huawei is also pushing a different software version based on EMUI 10 for the phone duo with the same May 2020 security patch level (SPL) in some regions, thus the actual broad-scale EMUI 10.1 rollout for these devices might be scheduled for the next month.

Interestingly, Huawei’s new Celia voice assistant isn’t included in the current EMUI 10.1 build for the P30 series. The company has recently enabled its own virtual assistant on the Huawei P40 lineup, but there is no confirmed timeframe of its arrival on older models as of yet.

Google releases “Soli Sandbox” app for developers to test projects

One of the Pixel 4 series’ unique features is the Soli chip in the top bezel. Soli is radar technology and it allows users to wave their hands in front of the phone to perform actions. Soli, a.k.a. “Motion Sense“, was pretty limited at first, but more features have been added since launch, and now Google is releasing the “Soli Sandbox” app to hopefully spur development.

Motion Sense debuted on the Pixel 4 series with only a few features. It could control music by skipping tracks, control a few system apps, and it could detect when you were picking up the phone, initializing Face Unlock. In March, Google added an “Air Tap” gesture in the Pixel Feature Drop. It allowed users to play or pause the music by “tapping” the air above the phone. But other than controlling music, Soli is extremely limited in what it can do. Google hopes to change that with the Soli Sandbox app.

The Soli Sandbox app is an extension of the web interface where developers can create prototype Motion Sense interactions for the Pixel 4. The Sandbox app allows developers to test out their projects on the actual phone to use the air gestures in real life. It’s not for consumers or for creating “production apps,” but you can try out the four gestures that Soli can do right now.

  • presence event is sent any time Soli detects one person within -0.7 meter (2.3 ft) of the device.
  • reach event is sent any time Soli detects a movement that resembles a hand reaching toward the device, within about 5-10cm.
  • swipe event is sent any time Soli detects movement that resembles a hand waving above the device, similar to opening a curtain in either direction.
  • tap event is sent when Soli detects a movement that resembles a single hand bounce above the center of the phone. A tap feels similar to dribbling a basketball.

The Soli Sandbox app includes four prototypes and developers can easily open projects via URL or local files. You can see a console log of interactions while testing. The app is, unsurprisingly, only available on the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL in the US, Canada, Singapore, Australia, Taiwan, and many European countries (where Soli is enabled).

Samsung will sell its second-gen Secure Element S3FV9RR security chip to other OEMs

The Samsung Galaxy S20 series is Samsung’s current-generation flagship series, bringing over a lot of firsts for the company. But in addition to all the flashy numbers on the spec sheet, the phones also featured the S3K250AF Secure Element module, a security chip and accompanying software solution meant to harden the security on the smartphone. Today, Samsung has announced the second-generation of its Secure Element module in the form of the S3FV9RR security chip and solutions.

The Samsung Secure Element (SE) S3FV9RR chip is part of a standalone turnkey security solution, complemented with “enhanced security software” that completes the package. This security module focuses on providing protection and security for tasks such as booting, isolated storage, mobile payment, and other applications. This security chip is Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level (CC EAL) 6+ certified, which is the highest level acquired by a mobile component. CC EAL 6+ is utilized in applications that demand the most stringent security requirements in the market, and Samsung cites examples of flagship smartphones, e-passports, and hardware wallets for cryptocurrency as use-cases. For reference, the predecessor’s CC EAL 5+certification meant that it has been semi-formally designed and tested to secure your private data.

The Samsung Secure Element S3FV9RR chip supports hardware-based root of trust (RoT), secure boot, and device authentication. As a bootloader initiates, a chain of trust is activated through which each and every firmware with approved keys is sequentially validated. This secure booting process is handled by the RoT, which gives service providers, manufacturers, and interested organizations the confidence that their proprietary applications are run only on an uncompromised device or on non-authorized firmware.

As this security module is an independent solution, it can work independently from the security performance of the device’s main processor. This versatility expands the security capabilities of mobile devices, IoT applications, and other devices at all performance levels. Samsung also notes that “the solution also meets the hardware security module requirements for cryptographic operations outlined by an upcoming mobile operating system version”.

Samsung’s new security solution, S3FV9RR, is expected to be available within the third quarter of this year.

OnePlus 8 series can now run Fortnite at 90fps, but you may want to avoid it

Fortnite is a battle royal game with peculiar obstacles and challenges that increase its difficulty significantly. On top of that, its vivacious visuals can not only stimulate but also overwhelm you if you are new to the game. But unlike other titles ported to mobile, Fortnite’s mobile version is a near-perfect replica of the desktop/console version. While this may be exciting for Fortnite lovers, it makes the game very demanding on the hardware of the smartphone and this is why the gameplay has been capped at 30fps for most devices. For a select few powerful devices including Samsung flagships, OnePlus 7T, Xiaomi’s Mi 9, iPhones among others, Fortnite’s developer Epic Games has allowed up to 60fps frame rate. But for the first time, Epic Games is adding the option of 90fps gameplay and it will be exclusive to the OnePlus 8 (review) and the OnePlus 8 Pro (review).

Epic Games has struck a special partnership with OnePlus to make this possible. Even though this combination of Snapdragon 865 and 90Hz (or higher) refresh rate is not unique to the OnePlus 8 series, the company’s announcement clearly states that these are the only phones which will support Fortnite gameplay at 90fps. The company has cleverly chosen the words, “90FPS for the first time on a phone” because Apple’s iPad Pro can already run Fortnite at 120fps. Later this year when Apple launches the iPhone 12 series with purported 120Hz displays, this statement might not hold good but until then, it does – and it does very well.

Gamespot, however, notes a caveat in running the game at 90fps on the OnePlus flagships and that is the limitation in terms of graphics. If you choose 90fps as the frame rate on a OnePlus 8/8 Pro, the display quality will default back to low. So, while this means you have a smoother experience, the details in the game’s landscape will only render as you move closer to them. There’s 100% resolution scaling which means you’ll be seeing ridged lines on while playing Fortnite on that setting.

To be honest, the smoother gameplay – as compared to 60fps – will most likely be pleasing to the eyes but it not be as useful when it comes to improving your skills. With that said, you can definitely try the feature out to see if that works for you.

Epic Games finally conceded and launched Fortnite on the Google Play Store recently after about two years of staying elusive (and exclusive to Epic’s own app). But the partnership with OnePlus means users with either of the two flagships will have one less step to download the game. You will get a stub within OnePlus’ Game Space to allow a one-tap installation process. In a joint press note with OnePlus, Epic Games’ founder and CEO Tim Sweeney said, “Easy installation with one touch really simplifies the process of installing software, and removes friction usually found on other Android devices.

Redmi 10X 5G, Redmi 10X Pro and Redmi K30i 5G launched in China

After several leaks and teasers, Xiaomi’s sub-brand Redmi has now officially unveiled the new Redmi 10X series in China. The series consists of three devices — the Redmi 10X 5G, Redmi 10X Pro, and Redmi 10X 4G — with the latter being a rebranded Redmi Note 9 which was launched earlier this year. Along with the Redmi 10X series, the company has also launched a new device in the Redmi K30 series — the Redmi K30i 5G.

Redmi 10X Series

As teased earlier, the Redmi 10X and Redmi 10X Pro are powered by MediaTek’s new mid-range Dimensity 820 chipset and feature 6.57-inch FHD+ AMOLED displays with 180Hz touch sampling and Gorilla Glass 5 protection. Both the devices feature a 48MP primary camera, an 8MP wide-angle camera, and a 5MP macro camera on the back, with the Redmi 10X Pro featuring an additional 8MP telephoto module. Over on the front, the non-pro variant features a 16MP selfie shooter, while the 10X Pro packs in a 20MP selfie camera.

The MediaTek Dimensity 820 chipset is accompanied by either 6GB or 8GB RAM on the Redmi 10X, while the 10X Pro is only available in an 8GB RAM variant. The storage on the devices ranges from 64GB to 256GB. Both phones are equipped with a 4,520mAh battery, which supports 22.5W fast charging on the regular 10X and 33W fast charging on the 10X Pro. In terms of software, both devices in the 10X series run MIUI 12 based on Android 10.

Pricing and Availability

The Redmi 10X and Redmi 10X Pro will be available in four color variants — blue, pink, gold, and white — with the Redmi 10X 5G starting at CNY 1,599 (~$224) for the 6/64GB variant and the Redmi 10X Pro starting at CNY 2,299 (~$322) for the 8/128GB variant. The non-pro variant will also be available in a 6/128GB configuration for CNY 1,799 (~$252), an 8/128GB configuration for CNY 2,099 (~$294), and an 8/256GB configuration for CNY 2,399 (~$336). The new Redmi K30i 5G, which was first spotted towards the beginning of this month, is essentially a cheaper version of the previously launched Redmi K30 5G which features a 48MP primary camera instead of a 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor.
