Download: Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7S receive stable beta Android 10 update with MIUI 11

Update 1 (07/20/2020 @ 05:40 PM ET): The Redmi Note 7 is now receiving Android 10 for the global region. Scroll to the bottom for more information. The article as published on July 9, 2020, is preserved below.

Launched back in 2019, Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 7 brought 48MP camera to the masses. The company decided to use a different camera sensor on the Indian variant, but they quickly phased out the initial model in favor of the Redmi Note 7S with a 48 MP primary rear camera. There is virtually no difference between the regular Redmi Note 7 and the Note 7S except the camera. Both models share a common code-name (“lavender”), thus their firmware packages are identical as well.

Redmi Note 7/7S XDA Forums

The factory-installed operating system on the phone duo was MIUI 10 on top of Android 9 Pie. The MIUI 11 update kept the underlying Android layer intact for them, but the phones have received a taste of Android 10 via MIUI 12-based closed beta builds. Xiaomi is now rolling out the Android 10 update for the Redmi Note 7/7S through the stable channel of MIUI, but there are a few stumbling blocks you should be aware of.

First of all, the stable build is still based on MIUI 11, not MIUI 12. Moreover, the company treats the current update as a “stable beta”, which means an authorized Mi Account might be required to sideload the ZIP file. Once Xiaomi marks it to be stable enough, they are going to flip a server-side switch that will eventually remove the need for such authorization before flashing. Alternatively, they could also release new builds with additional bug fixes.

The software version of the new build is V11.0.2.0.QFGxxXM, and it bumps the Android security patch level (SPL) to June 2020. The OTA is rolling out in China and India as of now, while other regional variants should get their updates soon. In case the bootloader of your Redmi Note 7/7S is unlocked and you want to install the updated build right now, either pick the appropriate Recovery ROM from the following table and flash using TWRP or straightaway choose the Fastboot ROM to bypass the Mi Account authorization requirement.

Samsung Health is dropping Weight, Food, and Caffeine tracking

One of the best things about Samsung’s fitness tracking app — Samsung Health — is that it offers a ton of additional features when compared to similar solutions from other manufacturers. Along with the usual step and fitness tracking, heart rate monitoring, and sleep monitoring, the app also helps you keep a track of your weight, calorie intake, and daily caffeine consumption. However, according to a recent report from Sammobile, Samsung is now dropping these additional features from the app in an upcoming update.

The report cites an end of service notice shared by Samsung in Germany, which states that Weight, Calorie, and Caffeine tracking will no longer be available in new versions of Samsung Health. This change will be put into effect with the release of Samsung Health v6.11 on mobile and v4.1 for Samsung smartwatches. Once the update rolls out, Samsung Health users won’t be able to access these metrics on the app and watch faces that displayed these metrics will no longer be able to do so.

The end of service notice further reveals that widgets for tracking these metrics won’t be able to sync that content to Samsung Health following the rollout. In case you’ve been using these features with your Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Fit, you’ll get a temporary option to save the collected data following the update. Do make sure you save your data as soon as the update rolls out, as it will be deleted after a certain time.

The updated app with the missing features is scheduled to start rolling out this month, both for Samsung smartphones and wearables. If you’re one of the many Samsung Health users who use these features, you can check out the Caffeine Tracker app and MyFitnessPal’s Calorie Counter app to continue tracking your weight, calorie and caffeine intake once the options are removed from Samsung Health.

Access Dots brings iOS 14’s camera and mic access indicators to Android

Our phones now have more apps that we can keep count of. As a result, Rogue apps sometimes masquerade as utilities and may misuse the granted permissions to secretly snoop on you. Smartphone manufacturers, as well as Google, have grown wary of the issue and every time an app uses the camera, microphone, or the location in the background on Android 9 Pie and upwards, you get a notification. Xiaomi has also added visual cues in MIUI 12 and so has Apple with iOS 14 to alert users every time an app accesses some features in the background. For phones by other manufacturers or running older versions of Android, Access Dots offers a similar solution by showing colored indicators every time an app uses the camera or the mic.

The app is created by XDA Recognized Developer jagan2, who has also created apps like Energy Ring, Energy Bar, and Energy Notch in the past. Much like the implementation in iOS 14, Access Dots shows colored dots whenever the camera or the mic is in use. Although the dots show up at the top right corner of the display, you can also choose the location for the dots from within the app’s settings. You can also choose from different colors for the camera and the microphone and change the size of the dot from the Settings.

The app is free to use and is expected to go live on the Google Play Store shortly, as per the developer. jagan2 also notes that the app itself does not access the camera or the microphone. You can see it in action in the GIF shared below, showing camera access for Instagram Stories.

Access Dots is expected to work on all Android devices with Android 7.0 Nougat and upwards. The app is not yet available to downloaded but we will update this post with a link to the app’s Play Store listing when it is available to download.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 with MediaTek Helio G85 SoC launched in India for ₹11,999 ($160)

Xiaomi’s Redmi Note series is one of its best selling series worldwide, playing a pivotal role in the brand’s image and value perception. However, Xiaomi’s branding, re-branding, and staggered releases leave a lot of us confused, especially for this year. Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 9 Pro and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max in India back in March 2020. The Redmi Note 9 Pro then launched globally as the Redmi Note 9S in the same month. Then, Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 9 and Redmi Note 9 Pro globally in April 2020. Adding to the device confusion is the POCO M2 Pro which has a similar set of specifications and design, and even competes in some of the same markets as the Redmi Note 9 Pro. Now, Xiaomi is launching the Redmi Note 9 in India with the MediaTek Helio G85 SoC.

The Redmi Note 9 follows the familiar design as the rest of the lineup, which is alright considering that Xiaomi has been mixing things up since the past few years on this lineup. The most recognizable aspect of the Redmi Note 9 is the quad-camera setup on the back, which finds some company with the conventional fingerprint sensor. On the front, the 6.53″ punch-hole display demands all of your attention.

On the inside, you get the MediaTek Helio G85 SoC, along with LPDDR4X RAM and eMMC 5.1 storage. The device is also powered by a substantial 5020 mAh battery that supports fast wired charging at 22.5W through the USB Type-C port. Xiaomi is also including a fast charger in the box, which is a welcome move for the price range that the phone targets. The device also includes a 3.5mm headphone jack, an IR blaster, and a microSD card slot for expansion (up to 128GB).

Pricing and Availability

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 will be available in India in Aqua Green, Arctic White, and Pebble Grey color variants. The phone will be available in different RAM and storage combinations as below:

  • 4GB + 64GB: ₹11,999 (~$160)
  • 4GB + 128GB: ₹13,499 (~$180)
  • 6GB + 128GB: ₹14,999 (~$200)

The device goes on sale on across Mi.com and Amazon.in, as well as offline stores (subject to local movement restrictions), starting from July 24, 2020.

Redmi India also tweeted out a Scarlett Red color variant, which we presume will be made available at a later date.

Google Chrome for Android is getting a download scheduler

Google Chrome is the most popular internet browser, and its popularity also spills on over to the Android, thanks to Google’s domination across the OS. Consequently, every new feature for Chrome will be available to a considerable portion of smartphone users. Google is continuously working to improve Chrome, and the latest feature that could make its way to the popular browser is a download scheduler.

According to a report from Techdows, Google is working on adding a “download later” feature to Chrome for Android. This feature would reduce the need to rely on a separate download manager app to schedule a file download at a later time. Google Chrome will seemingly offer an option to download the file at a specific date and time in the future, right in the download dialog that is displayed when a download is set to begin.

At the moment, Google Chrome only provides a few download-related options. You can choose the file location and whether to download articles over Wi-Fi, but that’s about it. On the latest Chrome Canary, you can enable an experimental flag called “Enable Download Later” present at chrome://flags. This flag will then allow you to schedule whether you want to download the file right then, or when you next connect to a Wi-Fi network, or at a specified time and date in the future. There’s also a handy button to save the preference in case you do not need a scheduling option. The Downloads page within Chrome will also show a “Scheduled for later” tab to let you manage the pending downloads.

There is no word on when this feature will make its way to the stable branch, or if it will, at all. Chrome has either added, or has been spotted working on, plenty of nifty features in the past few months, such as the ability to define words with a single tap, a screenshot editor, bottom tab switcher, a switchover to 64-bit for Android 10 devices, biometric authentication for payments, throttling background JavaScript timers to improve battery life, streaming videos in low resolution in Lite mode, and more.

Pterodon Recovery Project is a new custom recovery for Android devices with an optimized GUI and more features

The “recovery” environment on Android-powered devices is a lightweight runtime mode that is usually separate from the actual Android user interface. On most occasions, the recovery is powered by a standalone kernel which means the device can boot to the recovery mode even if the main Android OS is unbootable. Such a design makes the recovery environment particularly useful for installing OTA updates and executing maintenance jobs (e.g. cleaning cache or erasing user data).

Later on, aftermarket modders expanded the scope of Android’s recovery mechanism. Legendary developer Koushik Dutta, better known as Koush to the Android power user community, introduced ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM) that could be used to perform system backup and restore, run adbd in insecure mode, install custom kernels and ROMs, and a whole host of other things. Koush did add touch screen support to CWM, but it was the Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP) that made touch-enabled recovery universally popular. TWRP and its forks, such as OrangeFox Recovery, RedWolf Recovery, Sky Hawk Recovery, etc. are the most popular custom recovery solutions in the Android modding circle at this moment, but now we have another contender in the arena. Meet the Pterodon Recovery Project!

XDA Senior Member ATG Droid, who used to be the lead developer of RedWolf Recovery, is the brain behind the new recovery solution. It is worth mentioning that Pterodon Recovery is not just another TWRP fork, but its whole codebase is being written from scratch. For example, the GUI part is handled by the libaroma engine – something that powers the fan-favorite AROMA Installer. The status bar workspace UI can be dynamically adjusted in the presence of a notch, while the recovery also supports double-tap-to-sleep (DT2S) out-of-the-box on compatible devices. Apart from regular customization options you should expect from a custom recovery, there is an option to change the brightness by holding the volume buttons and turn on the flashlight by holding the power button.

Keep in mind that Pterodon Recovery is not at all suitable for daily use at this stage. Several vital modules, such as partition management, have yet to be implemented by the developer. The source code is open, though, which means other community members are free to submit patches, develop new features, and fix existing bugs (there are many!). In case you want to port Pterodon Recovery to your device, check out this manifest. ATG Droid has also published compiled builds of Pterodon Recovery for two Xiaomi devices, which can be found below:

OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro’s latest update brings over support for OnePlus Buds, and more

OnePlus is gearing up for the launch of the OnePlus Nord and the OnePlus Buds in just a few days now. But the company hasn’t forgotten its current generation flagships. OnePlus is rolling out a new set of OxygenOS updates to the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro that brings over the latest July 2020 security patches, as well as support for OnePlus Buds.

OnePlus 8 XDA Forums || OnePlus 8 Pro XDA Forums

The update has currently been spotted for OnePlus 8 Pro in the Indian region, but it should also make its way to other regions and to the other device as well. And we presume that the update will arrive sooner rather than later as it contains a fix for ARCore failure on the devices, which would be much needed considering that the OnePlus Nord is launching through an AR event.

The exact version of OxygenOS will change according to device and region, but the underlying changelog should majorly be the same across both the devices and regions, with the exception of the Red Cable Club (which remains India-exclusive so far) and wireless charging. Here is the full changelog:

Changelog

  • System
    • Newly adapted OnePlus Buds, easier to take advantage of wireless connection
    • Provided a variety of clock styles for you. You can customize on your own. (Go to Settings > Customization > Clock style)
    • Optimized the touch experience in game mode to enhance the user experience
    • Fixed the issue that the wireless charger base re-started automatically
    • Fixed the ARCore failure
    • Updated Android Security Patch to 2020.07
    • Updated GMS package to 2020.05
