Netflix tests ₹349 Mobile+ plan with PC support and HD streaming

In a bid to capture the ever-growing smartphone user base in India, Netflix launched a new ₹199 mobile-only plan back in July last year. The plan offered users access to the platform’s content in SD resolution, with no additional perks like multi-device streaming or PC/TV support. While the plan is great to attract first time users, it isn’t as lucrative for someone who already has access to a multitude of cheap streaming services, especially ones that offer HD playback and PC/TV support. This is why Netflix is now testing a new Mobile+ plan in the country that offers both these perks.

According to a recent report from AndroidPure, Netflix’s new Mobile+ plan is priced at ₹349 (~$4.7), and it offers HD streaming capabilities. The plan also gives users access to Netflix on their PC, Mac or Chromebook, however, it doesn’t include support for smart TVs or multi-device streaming. The new plan is currently being tested with a small number of users, and it will be rolled out to more users if the platform receives a positive response.

In a statement regarding the matter, a Netflix representative was quoted saying,” We launched the Mobile plan in India to make it easier for anyone with a smartphone to enjoy Netflix. We want to see if members like the added choice [the Mobile+ plan] brings. We will only roll it out long-term if they do.”

It’s also worth noting that if the new Mobile+ plan is rolled out for all users, it might replace Netflix’s current ₹499 “Basic” plan. As Gadgets360 points out, the Basic plan seems to be hidden for those users who have access to the new plan. For the unaware, Netflix’s Basic plan offers support streaming in SD resolution on all devices with a one device limit. This makes the new Mobile+ plan a better deal, as long as you don’t watch Netflix on a smart TV.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra leaked specs reveal 108MP camera, low-latency S Pen, and 6.9″ QHD 120Hz display

At the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked launch event early next month, Samsung is expected to unveil 5 new devices. Even though the company hasn’t revealed exactly which devices will be launched at the event, recent leaks and rumors suggest that Samsung will, most likely, launch the Galaxy Note 20 series at the event. As part of the series, the company is expected to launch two devices — the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra — which we’ve already seen in several leaks over the last few weeks. Thanks to the leaks, we’ve already got a good look at the design of the upcoming devices. And now, we finally have some interesting details about the hardware specifications of the flagship Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

Renowned leakster Roland Quandt (@rqandt) has managed to procure official marketing material for the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, which highlights key details about the upcoming flagship. As per a recent post on WinFuture, the marketing material reveals that the device will feature a revised 108MP primary camera with f/1.8 aperture and 0.8micron sensor pixels. While the sensor is expected to include dual-pixel autofocus technology, Samsung has added a dedicated laser-autofocus module on the device for even faster focusing.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 ultra

Additionally, the device will feature two 12MP sensors on the back, one of which features a periscope lens with 5x optical zoom with f/3.0 aperture and 1.0micron pixels. The remaining 12MP module features an ultra-wide-angle lens with an f/2.2 aperture and 1.4micron pixel size. Over on the front, the device will feature a 10MP sensor with dual-pixel autofocus, f/2.2 aperture, and 1.22micron pixel size. The report further reveals that the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will opt for 50x space zoom, instead of the 100x space zoom found on the Galaxy S20 Ultra.

Along with information about the cameras on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, the report reveals that the device will feature a 6.9-inch QHD dynamic AMOLED display with a resolution of 3200 x 1440 pixels and 19.3:9 aspect ratio. As previous rumors suggested, the device will feature a 120Hz high refresh rate panel with dynamic control to automatically adjust the refresh rate depending on what you’re doing on the device. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will also be the first device to feature Corning’s Gorilla Glass 7.

The report further adds that the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will feature a “Real Feel” S Pen with a latency of just 9ms to make writing or drawing as realistic as possible, it will be the first smartphone with Microsoft xCloud optimizations and Xbox Game Pass for a better cloud gaming experience, and that it will feature support for the new Wireless-DeX mode. Additional details include a USB 3.2 Type-C port, NFC support, Bluetooth 5.x, WiFi 6, and dual GPS support. The device will also pack in AKG-optimized speakers and it will feature an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.

As far as the chipset is concerned, Samsung will ship the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra with its own flagship Exynos 990 SoC and the company won’t switch to a Snapdragon chip for the European region. The SoC will be accompanied by 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB UFS 3.1 storage. The device will include a slightly larger 4,500mAh battery with fast charging and wireless charging support. And lastly, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will include a dual SIM card tray with eSIM support.

Developer ports One UI 2.1 and Galaxy S20 features to several Samsung Galaxy phones with the Exynos 7870

Back in April 2020, Samsung delivered the Android 10 update to the Galaxy J6 sans the One UI 2.1-specific software features. The phone is powered by the Exynos 7870 chipset, a 14nm octa-core SoC from 2016 that also powers several mid-range Samsung Galaxy phones. Many of those Exynos 7870-equipped devices are excluded from getting the official Android 10 update from Samsung, although they are theoretically capable of running it. To fill the void, XDA Recognized Developer Astrako has now compiled a generic Android 10 ROM containing a bunch of One UI 2.1 features from the Galaxy S20 series for the Exynos 7870 platform.

Dubbed as H-ROM, the GSI-esque ROM is compatible with seven legacy Exynos 7870-powered Samsung smartphones, which includes the Galaxy A3 (2017) and different variants of the Galaxy J5/J6/J7. The base of the ROM is taken from the Galaxy S20 5G, while the developer ships a modified CSC from the Galaxy S10 that enables features like native call recording. The whole package is dependent on the unofficial Project Treble implementation for these devices by the same developer.

Featuring July 2020 Android security patches, the latest version of H-ROM is stable enough to be a daily driver. There are some known glitches with the camera, though, and the built-in H-Kernel has SELinux in permissive mode, which is a major security issue. In case you want root access, it would be better to opt for the Canary version of Magisk. Flashing Magisk stable on top of the current build of this ROM gives you a bootloop, so avoid that for now.

Download H-ROM

Once you successfully Treble-ize your device and install H-Vendor, you have to completely wipe it before flashing the H-ROM ZIP. There is no device-specific build, as the unified installer is smart enough to detect the model and apply appropriate modules. The base variant of H-ROM is optimized for devices with a smaller system partition. A separate Samsung stock app package is provided by the developer for sideloading.

YouTube Music is rolling out collaborative playlists and ML-assisted playlists

YouTube Music is Google’s much-maligned music service and it continues to pick up necessary features. That’s part of what makes it a frustrating service to some people as it’s meant to be a Google Play Music replacement now, but still lacks many features. The latest additions are collaborative playlists and “assisted” playlists.

Collaborative playlists is a feature that many other music services have and they can be very useful. Users can create a playlist in YouTube Music and then share a link to allow others to add songs. The YouTube video platform has had this feature for a while, so it makes sense on the music service as well.

The next playlist feature is a little fancier. The “assisted” playlist feature uses machine learning to provide users with song recommendations in playlists. The recommendations are based on the current songs in the playlist and your listening tendencies. You can even create a blank playlist and fill it in with recommendations based solely on the playlist name. Spotify has a similar feature where it will show related songs at the bottom of a playlist.

These new playlist features are rolling out now to YouTube Music on Android via a server-side switch. While they may seem like small updates, as with every YouTube Music addition, they go toward making the service feel like a real competitor in the music industry.

Google plans to make Android Go Edition required for new low RAM devices

In 2017, Google announced a modified version of Android for low-end devices. “Android Go Edition” was built specifically for devices with 1GB or less of RAM. In conjunction, Google has released lightweight “Go Edition” versions of many of its popular services. Android Go has never been a requirement for these low-end devices, though. That could change soon, however.

According to a leaked copy of Google’s “Android 11 Go edition Device Configuration Guide” (dated April 24, 2020), Google plans to make Android Go Edition a requirement for newly launched devices with 2GB of RAM or less. Here are the new requirements that will be put in place:

    • Beginning with Android 11, devices with 512MB RAM (including upgrades) are not qualified for preloading GMS.
    • All new PRODUCTS launching with Android 11, if they have 2GB RAM or less, MUST return true for ActivityManager.isLowRamDevice() API, and launch as an Android Go device.
    • Starting in Q4 2020, all new PRODUCTS launching with Android 10, if they have 2GB RAM or less, MUST return true for ActivityManager.isLowRamDevice() API, and launch as an Android Go device.
    • Previously launched 2GB RAM devices in standard GMS configuration SHOULD NOT convert to Android Go configuration via MRs or letter upgrades. They will remain standard Android

What that all means is that starting later this year in Q4 2020, any new Android 10 device that launches with 2GB or less of RAM must use Android Go Edition. Furthermore, any device launching with Android 11 that has 2GB or less of RAM must also use Android Go. Basically, there’s still some time for low RAM Android 10 devices to slide under the requirement, but new, low RAM Android 11 devices won’t get that chance.

As mentioned, Android Go was originally intended for devices with less than 1GB of RAM, but it wasn’t required for OEMs to implement. The introduction of Android Go devices with 2GB of RAM is actually somewhat new as well. It appears the change happened late last year, with Google updating its website to reflect this change. The inclusion of 2GB RAM devices brings the 64-bit kernel/userspace into the Go Edtion ecosystem.

These upcoming requirements should make a pretty big change in how low-end Android devices are perceived. Dropping Android 11 GMS (Google Mobile Services) support for the ultra-low end 512MB devices means we won’t see any of them in the future. And Android Go being installed on 1GB and 2GB devices means better performance overall. Devices in this range can be very popular, which makes it important for the Android experience to be as good as possible.

We heard from a source last week about this upcoming change and this document corroborates what we previously heard. However, it’s possible that the information from our source and this document are outdated and Google may have retracted this requirement. We’ll keep an eye out for any public announcements from Google as well as any updates to internal documents to see if we can find out more information.

Thanks to Tillie Kottmann (@deletescape) for finding the document with this information!

LG has launched the Velvet in South Korea and a few European countries so far, but starting tomorrow (July 22) it will be available in the U.S. as well. AT&T will have it first, starting tomorrow, but Verizon (as expected) and T-Mobile will be getting it “later this summer.” Pricing starts at $599 and AT&T will have four colors available: Aurora Gray, Aurora Silver, Aurora Red, and Pink White.
