You can now watch Netflix on the Google Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max

Google Assistant Smart Displays are great for getting visuals that aren’t possible on audio-only smart speakers. But smart displays aren’t only for viewing typical Google Assistant commands and routines. They can also be used similarly to any Chromecast-enabled display. One service that has been notably absent, however, is Netflix. That’s finally changing.

The Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max can do a lot of handy things with their displays. You can view Google Photos slideshows, make and receive Google Duo video calls, check-in on connected security cameras, and more. They can also be used for watching media streaming services like YouTube. Netflix has been missing, though, and now it’s officially available for both Smart Displays.

Currently, Netflix is limited to the Nest-branded Smart Displays, so it won’t work on devices like the Lenovo Smart Display. To set it up on your display you can go to the settings in the Google Home app and link your Netflix account under the “Videos and Photos” section. From there you can simply use voice commands to start playing a specific show or movie. You can also bring up a browsing interface and use the touchscreen by saying “Hey Google, open Netflix.”

Google mentions there are a number of other streaming services available on Nest smart displays. Netflix, NBC Peacock, and HBO Max are some of the newer additions, but there’s also Disney+, CBS All Access, Sling TV, Hulu, SHOWTIME, and many more. Not all of these can be initiated with voice commands, but you can use the cast button to send content to the display.

Samsung announces Galaxy Z Flip 5G with Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus and a familiar design

In 2019, Samsung, Huawei, and Motorola set out to create and conquer the segment of foldable smartphones with their respective contenders. Out of these, Samsung undeniably received most of the spotlight for the Galaxy Fold, primarily owing to its worldwide popularity. The Galaxy Fold was followed by Samsung’s vertically folding and relatively much more compact Galaxy Flip Z that was unveiled alongside the Galaxy S20 series. Although the Galaxy Z Flip is projected as futuristic, it has one major hurdle that deters it from being future-ready i.e. the lack of 5G connectivity. That changes today as Samsung is launching an overhauled Galaxy Z Flip with 5G. Even though the Galaxy Z Flip 5G was expected to launch alongside the Galaxy Note 20 series at the live Samsung Unpacked event next month, the Korean giant has officially announced the new device, presumably to avoid chaos at the already packed (pun unintended) launch event.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip sports the exact same design and primarily the same features as the previous 4G variant. It features the same 6.7-inch Full HD+ “Infinity Flex Display” with a pixel density of 425ppi. Just like the previous model, there’s another tiny display outside that measures 1.1 inches and has a resolution of 300 x 112 pixels. The 12MP wide and 12MP ultra-wide cameras outside and the 10MP selfie camera remain the same as well.

Powering the Galaxy Z Flip 5G is Qualcomm’s latest and the most powerful Snapdragon 865 Plus mobile platform on which the Prime Core is overclocked from 2.84GHz to 3.1GHz. 5G connectivity is facilitated by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X55 5G modem-RF system that can render speeds up to 5Gbps in theory. In practice, however, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G supports sub-6GHz spectrum bands on NSA and SA 5G networks along with Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS). The smartphone does not support mmWave spectrum bands.

As per its purported TENAA listing, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G supports N41, N78, and N79 bands for both SA as well as NSA 5G networks, although that could be limited to the Chinese variant.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G comes to the U.S.A. in Mystic Gray and Mystic Bronze colors. The unlocked variant is priced at $1449.99 which can be bought at Samsung.com, Amazon, and Best Buy starting from August 7, 2020. The carrier model will be available via AT&T and T-Mobile from the same date.

Realme X3 SuperZoom gets unofficial bootloader unlock method, while Realme C3 receives it officially

Realme usually ships their phones with an unlockable bootloader, but you can’t simply use a typical Fastboot unlock command to accomplish the task. Unless you’re dealing with the Realme 2 or C1, you have to first install a model-specific app known as In-Depth Test to validate the eligibility of bootloader unlocking. The app sends a bunch of unique identifiers from the target device to Realme servers in order to generate an unlock token. After a successful server-side validation, the app itself installs the token on the phone, and then only you can proceed with fastboot flashing unlock to carry out the remaining unlock process. However, it seems that an existing In-Depth Test app can be forced to run on an unsupported model in some cases. The “hack” is stable enough to unlock the bootloader of the Realme X3 SuperZoom.

While reviewing the Realme X3 SuperZoom, our very own Zachary Wander, better known in the forums as XDA Recognized Developer Zacharee1, has discovered that the In-Depth Test app intended for the Realme 6 Pro can also be used to perform the bootloader unlocking on the X3 SuperZoom. The app might throw some errors regarding device incompatibility, but you can easily change the region settings on your Realme X3 SuperZoom to bypass them. Unlocking the bootloader will factory reset your device, but it’s absolutely essential if you wish to root your device.

According to Zachary, the trick might work on the regular Realme X3 as well, while we can spot conflicting reports of Realme 6 bootloader unlock using the same app. The OEM has yet to publish the kernel sources for the Realme X3 series, thus don’t expect a source-built custom ROM for the device duo at this moment even if you manage to unlock the bootloader.

The Realme C3 has also gained bootloader unlocking support, albeit via the official channel. The company published the kernel sources for this device back in April, and now finally they have released the In-Depth Test APK for the Realme C3. We hope that the availability of the kernel source and the bootloader unlocker app should be useful to kickstart development on this phone.

Lenovo launches Legion Phone Duel with Snapdragon 865 Plus, 90W charging, side popup, and more

The gaming smartphone segment has grown steadily over the last couple of years, with several OEMs like Asus, Razer, and Nubia offering some compelling devices geared towards mobile gamers, and practically all of them pushing the envelope when it comes to pure specifications. Now, Lenovo is marking its entry into the gaming smartphone segment with the launch of its first smartphone under the Legion brand, the Lenovo Legion Phone Duel, which will also be known for its quirky take on the front-facing camera amongst other features.

The Lenovo Legion Phone Duel had been extensively leaked and teased, so we had already had a fair idea of what to expect from the device. The stand-out feature of the device (pun intended) is perhaps the side-mounted pop-up front-facing camera, which houses a 20MP sensor. Moving the camera to a popup on the side allows Lenovo to ship a fullscreen experience, and also promote one of the highlight features of the device: the Lenovo Legion Phone Duel is targeting gamers who would prefer using a device in landscape orientation instead of the conventional portrait orientation, even when not gaming. Of course, you can also use the side-mounted front camera if you are a game streamer, and Lenovo is including software tweaks that will let you easily inlay your front camera view while game streaming.

If you do prefer to spend more of your time gaming, the Lenovo Legion Phone Duel is one of the smartphones you should consider. The phone has an expansive 6.59″ FHD+ AMOLED with a 240Hz touch sampling rate and a 144Hz refresh rate, pushing it into the realm of rare smartphones with such a high refresh rate display. The dual front stereo speakers also ensure you get the best of your gaming experience. As for the phone, it follows along with a gaming phone aesthetic, complete with a multicolor LED on the back beneath the Legion “Y” logo.

On the inside, the Lenovo Legion Phone Duel comes with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus, as we already knew. Lenovo is pairing this up with up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage, ensuring you have some of the best specifications on paper. Powering the device is a 5,000mAh battery, which Lenovo has positioned in a split-cell design onto the top and bottom of the phone — Lenovo claims this is where gamers usually rest their hands while gaming, so the freed up space in the middle can be occupied by the logic board which is likely to run hotter during an intense session.

The Lenovo Legion Phone Duel is also the first smartphone to ship with an insane 90W Turbo Power Charging technology — but there is a catch here. To achieve this 90W, you need to make use of both the USB Type-C ports simultaneously, which would allow you to charge the 5000mAh battery from 0% to 50% in just 10 minutes, and complete a full charge of the massive battery within 30 minutes.

Pricing and Availability

The Lenovo Legion Phone Duel will be available in the coming days of July 2020 in China. Later, it will be made available in other select markets in the Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. The phone will not be making its way to the USA as per current plans.

Chrome OS 84 adds an Explore app and multi-window overview improvements

Chrome OS 83 hit the stable channel earlier this year in May and introduced a couple of new features to the operating system, including tab groups in the browser and virtual desk renaming. The update also brought along a new ‘Show Password’ icon to help you easily view your password/pin during login, the ability to control media sessions with the Google Assistant, and new Google for Families features with better parental controls. Now, Google has started rolling out Chrome OS 84 to the stable channel, with a new Explore app, multi-window overview improvements, and more.

The company recently announced the rollout in a blog post, which details some of the key new features in the latest Chrome OS update. The update introduces a new Explore app to the platform which is designed to help new users get a hang of the operating system. The app replaces Chrome OS’s older Get Help app and gives you easy access to answers and visual tutorials to some of the most commonly asked questions from new Chromebook users.

The Explore app also features a ‘Perks’ tab that gives you quick access to some of the best Chromebook perks. For instance, in the U.S. you can currently use the Explore app to get free access to 100GB of storage and more through Google One for a year, free access to Stardew Valley, and free three months of Disney+.

Along with the new Explore app, Chrome OS 84 also brings some improvements to the multi-window Overview experience which will let you easily drag windows from your Chromebook’s screen to an external monitor and vise versa. Following the update, you’ll also be able to split your screen from Overview for better multitasking. The Chrome OS update also brings new emoji to the platform, including a new yawning face emoji, an ear with a hearing aid, and a sari emoji.

While the blog post only talks about the aforementioned features, a post on the Chromebook Help forums details a couple of more changes included in Chrome OS 84. Here are all the changes included in the latest Chrome OS update:

• Explore App Launch: Explore is a new app that will replace the Get Help app on your device. You can now explore help center content while being offline, get the latest perks for your device, and search directly within the app to learn more about your device.
• Take photos with the volume buttons: When your Chromebook is in tablet mode, you can press the up or down volume button to snap a photo or start/stop a video recording.
• Save Videos on Chromebooks: Videos captured in the Chrome OS Camera app will now save as MP4 videos. This makes it easier to use your recorded videos in other apps and while sharing with friends and family.
• Overview Mode: When in Overview mode you can now drag a window to the left or right edge to quickly set up split screen. If you use multiple displays, you can now drag windows between displays while in Overview mode.
• Linux (Beta) Updates: You can now control microphone access in Settings for Linux (Beta). By default, the setting will be toggled off and you can change at any time.
• Resize Virtual Keyboards: You can now resize your floating onscreen keyboard by dragging from each corner of the keyboard.
• Search in ChromeVox: It’s now possible to search within the ChromeVox menus to find what your are looking for even faster! Simply open the menu and you’ll be placed in the Search field. You can either search for a given item, or use the arrow keys to navigate the menus.

Energy Notch battery indicator adds support for the OnePlus 6/7/7T, POCO F1, Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite 5G, Redmi Note 7/7S, and the Motorola One Power

Android is all about customization, and the aftermarket development community is the driving force behind that liberty. The developers often come up with creative ideas to re-use an existing design component in a completely different way than the one it is intended for. Take the example of Energy Notch by XDA Recognized Developer jagan2 – a cool app that puts the display-notch of the OnePlus 6T to use by turning the space around the notch into an animated battery indicator.

Soon after releasing the initial version of the app, the developer has started collecting feedback from the owners of several other smartphones having notched display panels in order to expand the list of supported devices. The latest version of Energy Ring, tagged as EN_1.2, now supports the OnePlus 6, OnePlus 7, and the OnePlus 7T. Besides OnePlus, the app is now fully compatible with a bunch of phones from different OEMs, namely the Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite 5G (and its Chinese variant, the Mi 10 Lite Zoom/Mi 10 Youth Edition 5G), the Redmi Note 7/Note 7S, the Poco F1, and the Motorola One Power.
