LG Velvet comes to Verizon in Aurora Red for $699

Verizon subscribers are being treated to a nice surprise today: the LG Velvet 5G UW is coming to the carrier on Friday, August 21, and Verizon will be the only U.S. carrier to have the mesmerizing Aurora Red color.

The device will retail for $699, which breaks down to $29.17 a month for 24 months. For a limited time, if you purchase the LG Velvet online, you can pick up the device for just $10 a month with a new line of service on a Premium Unlimited plan.

Announced back in May, the LG Velvet is a sleek new flagship from LG that features a 6.8-inch OLED display, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G, triple rear cameras, 6GB of RAM, a 4,300mAh battery, expandable storage, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and stylus support. It also features support for LG’s unique Dual Screen accessory.

When the device launches on Verizon, it’ll support the carrier’s 5G mmWave “Ultra Wideband” network, along with its 5G sub-6GHz “Nationwide” network, which is coming soon. Support for mmWave 5G is the reason why Verizon’s model is $100 more expensive than the model for other carriers. Though to offset the cost somewhat, Verizon said if you upgrade to the device, you’ll get $350 guaranteed with a trade-in for the LG Velvet. There are stipulations, though: You must be on a Premium Unlimited plan, your trade-in device must be in good working condition, and the discount is applied via a recurring 24-month bill credit. And remember, if you do buy the LG Velvet from Verizon, you won’t be able to unlock the bootloader. Only the European model can be unlocked at the moment.

Unofficial builds of TWRP and OmniROM are now available for the Motorola Moto G8 Power

Back in February, Motorola refreshed its Moto G lineup by launching a pair of Qualcomm Snapdragon 665-powered smartphones. The Lenovo-owned brand dropped the numeric identifier from the names of these two phones in some regions, e.g. the “Moto G8 Power” launched as the “Moto G Power” in the U.S. To make things further complicated, Motorola maintains two different sets of firmware packages for the Moto G Power (code-name “sofia”) and the Moto G8 Power (code-name “sofiar”). The whole situation is certainly a bit chaotic for aftermarket development on these phones, but XDA’s brilliant developer community has managed to kickstart the journey anyway. Unofficial OmniROM 10

XDA Recognized Developer vache has come up with a source-built version of OmniROM for the Moto G8 Power. Despite being in an early stage of development, the custom ROM is surprisingly stable and most of the basic features work flawlessly. You don’t need to flash Google Apps separately, however, the ROM package must be flashed via Fastboot interface. Head over to the forum thread linked below and follow the instructions in the first post to get the ROM up and running on your device.

Unofficial OmniROM 10 for the Moto G8 Power

The current version of the ROM may not work properly on the Moto G Power, due to the fact that the developer has yet to offer a unified build.

Unofficial TWRP

An unofficial build of TWRP is also available for download, courtesy of the same developer. Unlike the aforementioned OmniROM build, the custom recovery image is compatible with both the Moto G8 Power and the Moto G Power. You should be able to boot it on the Moto G Stylus (code-name “sofiap”) and the Moto G Pro (code-name “sofiap_ao”) as well.

OnePlus TV update improves OnePlus Connect experience and enhances audio quality on the Y Series

OnePlus entered the smart TV segment in India last year with the launch of two 4K QLED TVs. The premium Q Series TVs (review) were launched at a starting price of ₹70,000 (~$990 at the time) and were heavily criticized for their pricing. In response, OnePlus launched two new smart TV series in the Indian market earlier this year, which start at just ₹12,999 (~$175). The mid-range OnePlus TV U series also introduced a bunch of new software features that were developed based on feedback received on its debut TV series. While these features were released for the older OnePlus TV Q series shortly after the launch, they weren’t released for the budget-friendly Y Series. Now, the company is rolling out an OTA update for the OnePlus TV Y series, which includes a couple of new features and improvements.

As per a recent post on the OnePlus Community forums, the latest OTA update for the OnePlus TV Y series addresses some of the key concerns raised by the community following its launch. Here’s the complete changelog for the OTA 2 update for the entry-level TVs:

• More skills added to work with Alexa
• Optimized OnePlus Connect experience by offering a better connection between Mobile and TV
• Optimized Audio Quality in default settings
• Optimized the system and memory usage for smoother experience

As with all OTA updates from OnePlus, the latest update for the OnePlus TV Y Series will be incremental. This means that the OTA update will only reach a handful of users at first. Once the company confirms that there aren’t any major issues with the update, it should roll out to all users in the coming days. Sadly, the latest OTA update still doesn’t include some of the new features introduced with the U series, including Data Saver Plus, Kids Mode, and OxygenPlay.

NVIDIA brings GeForce NOW game streaming to Chromebooks

Chromebooks are usually seen as cheap cloud-centric productivity devices, and that is true for the most part. One of the main draws on a Chromebook is the fact that most activities rely on an active internet connection, letting users do more through the cloud rather than their own hardware. Cloud gaming just makes sense on a Chromebook, though services have been surprisingly slow in bringing over adoption. NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW game streaming left beta in February 2020, with a promise to come to Chromebooks “later this year”. NVIDIA is now following up on this promise by adding Chromebook support to GeForce NOW.

GeForce NOW is arriving on Chromebooks in beta, joining users on other platforms like PC, Mac, SHIELD, and Android. Users interested in gaming on a Chromebook need to head on over to the website and log in with their account. They can either choose from a paid Founders membership or a free account. And that’s about it, as game streaming from that point onwards is just a few clicks to select the game that you want to play. You can select from games present on the digital stores like Steam, Epic Games Store, and Ubisoft Uplay. NVIDIA also supports Steam Sync, so you can sync your Steam library onto GeForce NOW, and NVIDIA states that this feature will be coming to Chromebook too, soon, alongside the Highlights feature.

The combination of Chromebooks and cloud gaming is perfect. Chromebooks by very nature are cloud-centric devices, and usually come with low-powered hardware. This hardware humility helps keep the cost down and does not impede productivity by a large margin as most tasks are offloaded to the cloud. The addition of a game streaming service, GeForce NOW in this case, massively helps improve the arguments towards a Chromebook versus a traditional laptop. For the best gaming experience though, we’d recommend at least using a mouse.

OnePlus Launcher update brings OnePlus Scout unified search feature for users in India

The latest update for the stock OxygenOS launcher app brings a new unified search feature for users in India. The feature, which was first spotted in an APK teardown of OnePlus Launcher v4.5.2 earlier this year, is called OnePlus Scout and it allows users to easily search for anything on their devices from a single unified search bar.

As you can see in the attached screenshots, the new OnePlus Scout feature will let you easily look up contacts, files, music, and more from the search bar in the app drawer. The feature will also let you find locations, restaurants, or places nearby and it will even solve simple math problems or queries by tapping into the Calculator app. Additionally, the feature will let you find news and weather information from apps installed on your device or directly from the web.

The OnePlus Scout feature is rolling out to users in India with v4.7.2_200818175549 of the OnePlus Launcher app. Once you install the update on your device, you should see a set-up screen for OnePlus Scout on your device once you access the app drawer. After you agree to OnePlus’ terms of use and Privacy Policy, the new feature will bring up a string of pop-ups for all the required permissions. As soon as you grant the feature all the required permissions, you’ll be able to search for almost anything on your device from a single unified search bar.

The feature also comes with a couple of customization settings, that will allow you to tailor your search results based on your needs. The OnePlus Scout settings will allow you to choose result preferences, customize which apps are displayed in the app drawer, view all required permissions, and enable/disable search tips. You can also choose to land directly onto OnePlus Scout as soon as you access the app drawer, instead of hitting the search bar for accessing it.

It’s worth noting that OnePlus seems to have removed OnePlus Scout’s ability to search through messages on your device. While our APK teardown had suggested that the feature would also let users search through text messages, this capability isn’t available in the final version of the feature. Aamir from our team tried the feature on his OnePlus 8 Pro and he didn’t get any search results from the Messages app using keywords from pre-existing SMS messages..

As mentioned earlier, the feature is currently only available for OnePlus users in India and we have no information from the company regarding a wider rollout.

Redmi K30 Ultra and Motorola Moto G8 kernel sources are now available

General Public License v2 gives end users the freedom to ask the Android OEMs to provide the source code of any Linux kernel binaries they have shipped on devices they sell. To comply with the legal obligation, most companies nowadays publish kernel sources sometime after their devices hit the market. Xiaomi, for example, used to be one of the worst offenders of GPLv2, but the situation has been greatly improved over the past few years. The Chinese OEM has now released kernel sources for the recently launched Redmi K30 Ultra.

Featuring the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 Plus SoC, the 5G capable Redmi K30 Ultra packs in some impressive specifications, such as a 120Hz AMOLED display, a 20MP pop-up camera, and a 4,500 mAh battery that is 33W fast charge ready. On the software side, the phone comes running Android 10 with MIUI 12 on top. While the Redmi K30 Ultra (codename “cezanne”) may not be launched outside China, it is good to see that Xiaomi has managed to minimize the delay posting kernel source codes for newer devices.

Motorola, meanwhile, has also published the kernel source codes for the Moto G8 (codename “rav”). The Qualcomm Snapdragon 665-powered phone comes with a triple rear camera setup, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. As a matter of fact, Motorola decided to rebrand the Moto G8 as Moto G Fast for the U.S., thus the Android 10-based source code linked below should be compatible with both of them.

A kernel source release with a proper commit history is quite helpful for the aftermarket development community. The modders can fiddle with the code and improve the overall performance of the respective device by tuning the stock kernel. Moreover, such source codes also serve as the foundation of building custom recoveries and ROMs for the device.

Moto E7 Plus and OPPO A53 leaked specs reveal the first phones with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 460

Leaked specifications of the upcoming Moto E7 Plus and OPPO A53 reveal that the devices will be the first to feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 460 chipset, which was announced earlier this year in January. The Snapdragon 460 chipset was unveiled alongside two mid-range chips — the Snapdragon 720G and Snapdragon 662. While we’ve already seen the Snapdragon 720G make an appearance on the POCO M2 Pro, OEMs are yet to launch a device featuring the other two chipsets.

However, a recent tweet from renowned leakster Evan Blass (@evleaks) reveals that Motorola is gearing up to launch the Moto E7 Plus, which will feature the Snapdragon 460 chip. The tweet in question includes an image that highlights some of the other specifications that we will see in Motorola’s next budget device. Unlike the recently launched Moto E 2020, the Moto E7 Plus will include a 5,000mAh battery, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of onboard storage, and a 48MP dual camera setup with night vision.

Along with the Moto E7 Plus, the Snapdragon 460 chipset will make an appearance on the upcoming OPPO A53. According to a recent report from MySmartPrice, the OPPO A53 recently made an appearance on several certification websites, giving us the first look at its specifications. As mentioned earlier, the device will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 460 chip, coupled with up to 6GB of RAM and up to 128GB of onboard storage.

The certification listings further reveal that the OPPO A53 will feature a 6.5-inch 90Hz LCD display, a 5,000mAh battery, a 16MP selfie camera, a 13MP primary camera on the back, a 2MP macro camera, and a 2MP depth sensor. The device will also include a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and it will support 18W fast wired charging. As of now, we have no information from Motorola or OPPO regarding the launch timeline for these devices.
