Google Recorder 2.0 from the Pixel 5 tests automated backups synced to Google Drive

The newly released Google Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 come with a revamped version of the Recorder app, an immensely useful voice recording app that Google debuted last year on the Pixel 4. The new Google Recorder 2.0 brings several exciting features, including a Smart Scrolling feature that highlights important keywords in a transcript next to the scrollbar, an Audio Editing feature that lets you edit your voice recording by editing the transcript, and Video Clips that allows you to generate a video clip using your audio recording.

Now, the app is preparing to add Google Account integration that will enable users to back up their recordings to Google Drive automatically. Currently, if you want to backup your audio or transcript files, you have to either locally export these files or upload them manually to Google Drive. Once Google Account integration goes live, Google Recorder will automatically backup and restore your recordings for you. The recordings will be backed up on your Google Drive and count against your storage.

Our Editor-in-Chief, Mishaal Rahman, managed to activate this new feature in Google Recorder 2.0 extracted from Pixel 5, and you can see it in action in the screenshots attached below.

Similar to Google Photos, you’ll also have the option to back up recordings only when you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network. Moreover, if you end up losing the on-device recordings, you’ll be able to redownload them from your Google Drive backup. Previously, if you uninstalled or cleared data for the Recorder app, there was no way to restore recordings in the app – you would have to rely on whatever files you manually externally backed up, with no way to reimport them into Google Recorder.

We don’t know when Google plans to roll out this feature to the masses, but we’ll be sure to let you know when that happens. Meanwhile, if you’re interested, you can try out the new Recorder app on your Android phone running Android 10 and above.

Download: Pixel Launcher from the Google Pixel 5 adds grid size options

After months of leaks and teasers, Google finally unveiled the new Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G late last month. As with all previous Pixel devices, Google’s latest flagship comes with a bunch of cool new software features. But some of these features are limited to the Pixel 5, and they may or may not be released for older Pixel devices. However, we’ve managed to extract and share some of the updated APKs from the Pixel 5 that enable these new features on older Pixel phones. These include Google Recorder 2.0, Google Camera 8.0, and the new live wallpapers. Now, we’ve managed to extract the latest version of the Pixel Launcher from Google’s new flagship and you can install it on any older Pixel device from the link below.

Google Pixel 5 Review — A flagship chip isn’t needed for a flagship phone

The latest version of the Pixel Launcher brings a new grid size customization option to the Pixel 5. As you can see in the attached screenshots, the option will let you customize your homescreen app grid layout. The feature can be accessed by long-pressing on an empty part of the homescreen and then selecting the Grid tab from the homescreen customization menu. Currently, the feature includes 4 grid size options — 5×5, 4×4, 3×3, and 2×2.

New app grid layout options in Pixel Launcher 3x3 app grid layout with a couple of app icons 4x4 app grid layout with a couple of app icons 5x5 app grid layout with a couple of app icons

You can download the new Pixel Launcher APK from the link below and install it on your Pixel device to get the new app grid customization option. We’ve tested the APK on the Pixel 3 XL and Pixel 4, but it should work on all Pixel devices running Android 11. It’s worth noting that sideloading the new Google Wallpapers app from the Pixel 5 will bring the new wallpaper picker UI in Pixel Launcher on older Pixel devices. However, doing so causes the live wallpaper picker to crash because the Pixel 5 and 4a 5G are running a slightly newer build of Android 11. This crash should be resolved when older Pixels get the updated codebase, likely with the next Pixel Feature Drop.

Xiaomi Mi 10T and Mi 10T Pro with Snapdragon 865, 144Hz Adaptive LCD display, 5G launch in India

Until last year, Xiaomi had primarily been focusing on the budget segments with its value-for-money offerings in price-competitive markets like India. Earlier this year, Xiaomi changed its focus by separating the Mi and Redmi brands and launching its flagship Mi 10 (review) in the country. Xiaomi’s biggest competitor in this price segment — OnePlus — announced their T upgrade for this year only yesterday and to match up to that Xiaomi is bringing not just one but two fighters in the arena. Xiaomi is launching the Mi 10T and the Mi 10T Pro smartphones with a Snapdragon 865 chipset, up to 108MP camera, 144Hz “Adaptive” LCD display, and several other quirks in India.

Mi 10T Pro Hands-on Preview: 144Hz Screen is so Smooth

With the display of the smartphone, Xiaomi takes an unorthodox approach by bringing a 144Hz LCD display in a price segment populated with smartphones sporting AMOLED displays. To justify the use of an LCD over AMOLED on the Mi 10T series, Xiaomi claims that the display has been tuned for higher color accuracy and it supports HDR10 and up to 98% of the DCI-P3 color gamut. The display measures 6.67 inches diagonally with a 20:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of Full HD+. The smartphones also boast of the “Adaptive” display that can intelligently shift the refresh rate based on the app on the content, similar to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra (review).

The Mi 10T and the Mi 10T are almost identical in most regards but a major difference comes in terms of the rear cameras. While the Xiaomi Mi 10T sports a 64MP primary camera, the Mi 10T Pro features a 108MP camera. Other than the primary camera, both of the smartphones share the same 13MP ultra-wide-angle and the 5MP macro cameras on the back and the 20MP hole-punch camera on the front. The two smartphones can record videos in up to 8K resolution and supports OIS for stable videos.

Internally, both — the Mi 10 and the Mi 10T Pro — feature the Snapdragon 865 mobile platform with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage. The non-Pro also gets a 6GB RAM variant. For charging, the Mi 10T series supports 33W wired charging with “Dual Split charging” that allows the batteries to be charged nearly twice as fast as the Mi 10.

In terms of software, the smartphones run the latest version of Xiaomi’s Android overlay — MIUI 12 — based on Android 10.

The OnePlus 8T doesn’t have preinstalled Facebook bloatware

OnePlus used to be one of the few Android OEMs that shipped new phones without any non-essential apps. But that changed with the launch of the OnePlus 8 Series and OnePlus Nord earlier this year. OxygenOS on the OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro, and the OnePlus Nord came with Facebook App Installer, Facebook App Manager, and Facebook Services installed as system apps, alongside the main Facebook app, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and Netflix. The company faced severe backlash because of this, and it seems to have changed course with the new OnePlus 8T.

OnePlus 8T Review: The T upgrade that makes sense

As per a recent report from Input, the OnePlus 8T doesn’t come with the Facebook apps and services preinstalled. Netflix is the only preinstalled third-party app on the device which has been installed to enhance HDR video playback, the company claims. The publication reached out to OnePlus regarding the matter and a company spokesperson confirmed that OnePlus has stopped preinstalling Facebook apps and services for the foreseeable future. However, the company didn’t commit to never preinstalling such bloatware on its devices, so we may see a resurgence in the years to come.

It’s also worth noting that while the OnePlus 8T doesn’t come with Facebook apps and services preinstalled, the company still doesn’t provide an easy way for users to remove the preinstalled services from older devices. While OnePlus didn’t comment on this issue, a source familiar with the matter told Input that the situation is more complicated than it looks and that there’s no simple, user-friendly way to remove Facebook services off phones that came with them preinstalled. This means that OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro, and OnePlus Nord users will be stuck with the Facebook services on their devices. Thankfully, we have a simple guide to help you remove preinstalled Facebook services from your OnePlus device that you check out by following the link below.

How to remove Facebook bloatware from the OnePlus 8 series and OnePlus Nord

The Android 11 update will roll out for the OnePlus 7 and 7T series in December

OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7T series owners eager to test out OxygenOS 11 won’t have to wait much longer. According to Android Authority, the Android 11 update for these devices will be available in December, contradicting earlier rumors that claimed the update wouldn’t be available until next year.

The OxygenOS 11 update based on Android 11 should be available by the end of this year for the OnePlus 7, OnePlus 7 Pro, OnePlus 7T, and OnePlus 7T Pro, according to the OnePlus spokesperson that AndroidAuthority spoke to. Because the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7T series feature different codebases, their respective Android 11 updates won’t roll out at the exact same time, but the updates should roll out pretty closely to one another. Furthermore, updates for carrier devices, like the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition on T-Mobile, will likely arrive at a later date, if prior history is anything to go by.

OnePlus OxygenOS 11

OxygenOS 11 based on Android 11 will make one-handed use much easier on OnePlus phones.

OnePlus has been incredibly busy over the last several months. In addition to rolling out new software updates, the company has also released a handful of new devices, including the new OnePlus 8T which already runs OxygenOS 11 out of the box. At the 8T launch event, OnePlus also teased that it’s working on a smartwatch — a project that’s been in flux for several years.

OxygenOS 11 is a big release for OnePlus. Not only does it include most of the best features from Android 11, but it also introduces features like an Always On Display and a redesigned weather app. The software also put focus on one-handed use — something we talked about extensively with Sam Twist, Senior Product Manager for OxygenOS at OnePlus.

Once OxygenOS 11 rolls out for the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7T series, we’ll be sure to let you know.

OnePlus unveils the Bullets Wireless Z Bass Edition and a 10,000mAh Power Bank in India

At an online event today, OnePlus took to the virtual stage to announce the OnePlus 8T, a notable revision over the OnePlus 8 with more bells and whistles like a 120Hz display and 65W charging. We’ve had a chance to review it, and we found it to be an awesome T series upgrade. In addition, OnePlus also announced the OnePlus Buds Z, a cheaper version of the OnePlus Buds that comes with tweaks such as silicone tips and an IP55 rating. But that’s not all the company announced. If you’re not a fan of true wireless earbuds and would prefer neckband-style earphones, then you’re probably holding out hope for a new version of the Bullets Wireless. If you happen to live in India, we have good news: OnePlus has announced the Bullets Wireless Z Bass Edition, a minor revision of the existing Bullets Wireless Z.

OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z Bass Edition

What’s the main difference between the regular version and the new Bass Edition? Both come with 9.2mm drivers that can deliver a rich bass effect and vocals, resulting in a pleasant listening experience. These earphones also come with what OnePlus calls “environmental noise cancellation”, which should not be confused with active noise cancellation that’s found in more premium products. It’s hard to complain about this when you look at the price point: ₹1,999. We can presume that OnePlus tuned the bass profile to be more suitable with the typical music listened to by Indian audiences (hence the name), so the bass on these is probably fuller than what you’ll hear on the standard model.

Among some of the other features the OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z Bass Edition comes with, we have 100ms low-latency audio, which is slightly less than the regular Bullets Wireless Z’s 110ms of latency. There’s also Warp Charge support that can give you 10 hours of playback with a quick 10-minute charge. The overall battery life of the device comes at a total of 17 hours of listening on a single charge, down from the regular version’s 20 hours.

The Bullets Wireless Z Bass Edition will go on presale through OnePlus’s official India store on October 15th before becoming available more widely on Amazon and Flipkart on October 16th. Open sales will begin on November 2nd. The earphones can be picked up in a new Reverb Red or Bass Blue color.

At just ₹1,999, the OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z Bass Edition is an affordable pair of entry-level Bluetooth wireless earphones.

OnePlus Power Bank 10,000mAh

Looking for a quick top up for your new OnePlus 8T? OnePlus is now selling a new version of its 10,000mAh Power Bank. This device has dual USB ports and can charge two devices simulatenously at 18W speeds. It also supports pass-through charging so you can charge your phone and power bank at the same time. The power bank has 12 layers of circuit protection for safeguarding against damage. It weighs 225g and has a curved body, so it’s lightweight and easy to carry.
