Here’s when your Samsung Galaxy phone may get the One UI 3.0 (Android 11) update

Android 11 is the newest version of Android. While the update has rolled out to a bunch of smartphones, phones that come with heavier UX skins need to wait for a longer time for the update to reach them. Samsung’s One UI 3.0 update is based on Android 11, and so far, the update has largely been restricted to flagship S series, Note series, and Fold series. If you are wondering when will your Samsung Galaxy smartphone get One UI 3.0 based on Android, here’s when it will receive its update.

Samsung has not publicly posted an update timeline for its Galaxy smartphones, but a list has been posted in the Samsung Members app for users in Egypt (via TizenHelp). This list may be talking about the update in the context of that region, but we can get a rough idea of the general timeline on when different phones will be getting their update. So far, Samsung has rolled out One UI 3.0 betas for the Galaxy S20 series, Galaxy Note 20 series, Galaxy S10 series, Galaxy Note 10 series, Galaxy Z Flip, and Galaxy Z Fold 2.

As is apparent, the update timeline mentioned within the Samsung Members app prioritizes the devices that already have a Beta update available in some form. The update lands on Samsung’s mid-range and budget range not before March 2021, which is a little disappointing. The update timeline also stretches all the way to September 2021, which is about a month before the next Android release is expected in stable form. Also, keep in mind that the wording used in the announcement on the Samsung Members app is “Preparing in …”, and not “Rolling out”, which leaves room open for any unexpected delays. Google announces Android Enterprise Essentials, a mobile device management (MDM) service for small businesses

Google has announced a new program designed to protect small business that deploy Android devices from malicious attackers.

Android Enterprise Essentials is described by Google as a secure mobile management service built by the Android team. The goal is to make mobile device management (MDM) on a smaller scale less complicated, providing businesses with the tools they need to keep their data protected.

Google calls the functionality of Android Enterprise Essentials a “critical set of default features.” These features are tailored for businesses with simpler needs and smaller budgets.

There are three core components that are applied automatically when a business signs up:

  1. Requiring a lock screen and encryption on devices to prevent unauthorized access to company data.
  2. Enforcing mandatory malware protection by ensuring Google Play Protect is always on and employees can’t download apps outside of the Google Play Store.
  3. Providing the ability to wipe all company data from a device in case it’s lost or stolen. 

Google said companies can just purchase devices as part of its Android Enterprise Recommended program and hand them off to employees with persistent policies already in place.

“Businesses are increasingly telling us their top consideration for investment is in security and increased user productivity,” said Mark Bowker, Senior Analyst with the Enterprise Strategy Group. “During ESG’s validation of Android Enterprise Essentials, it became quickly evident that the simple management capabilities and seamless employee experience provide confidence in security for businesses and a safer work environment for employees.”

Google said Android Enterprise Essentials is ideal for small and medium-sized businesses, but could also work for larger organizations. The program is in the initial rollout phase with distributors Synnex in the U.S. and Tech Data in the UK. Once the program is taken global next year, Android Enterprise Essentials will be available through additional resellers.

Evernote is rolling out a major redesign on Android

Evernote has unveiled details for a major redesign that’s currently rolling out to Android. The company said the changes provide users with a “more streamlined Evernote experience.”

There are four components to the redesign: streamlined navigation, improved note editor, new note button, and faster search.

The new navigation menu opens from the left side, so you can quickly access your notes, notebooks, shortcuts, tags, and more. It’s in-line with more modern experiences, and puts your notebooks right at your fingerprints without first digging through a menu.

The improved note editor includes new formatting options, better readability, and more consistency across devices. As you can see in the screenshot below, there are tools for changing things such as text, text size, alignment, links, and much more. It makes for a more feature-rich experience, and allows users to get more creative while on the go.

The Evernote redesign also includes a new note button. As the name suggests, the new note button allows users to quickly create a blank note — or you can select from a range of other options, like scan a document, record audio, add attachment, and more.

Finally, the update includes faster search, which was first introduced in Evernote on the web. Faster search allows users to see real-time suggestions as you type. It may not be a feature you use everyday, but it’s one of those quality of life improvements that makes the app more pleasing to use.

While Evernote said the update is rolling out now, it’s being made available in the Play Store over the course of several weeks. The latest update only supports Android 10 or newer; Evernote said it’s working to get the app ready for Android 9 and older, but didn’t provide a release timeline.

According to Evernote, some features won’t be available in the new app right away, including an Evernote widget, multi-select, password management support, and more.

Microsoft releases its first Windows Feature Experience Pack with new features for Windows 10

Microsoft has unveiled details for its first Windows Feature Experience Pack, a new initiative that will deliver smaller feature improvements outside of major Windows 10 feature updates. These smaller updates are developed independently of the OS.

The new program is currently being tested with Windows Insiders, and only a limited number of features are being developed for the Windows Feature Experience Pack. Microsoft said the program will initially start out small, but will grow in scope and frequency in the future.

There are two features as part of Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.1070.0:

  • Based on Insider feedback, you can now use the built-in screen snipping experience in Windows (WIN + SHIFT + S) to create a snip of your screen and paste it directly into a folder of your choice in File Explorer to save the screenshot there. Try it out!
  • Using the touch keyboard in a portrait posture on a 2-in-1 touch device now supports split keyboard mode.

Microsoft said that the smaller updates will eventually get folded into “the already existing servicing process for Windows 10 and delivered to customers that way through Windows Update.” Updates to Windows Feature Experience Pack will be delivered to Insiders through Windows Updates just like builds and cumulative updates are.

Microsoft’s new approach is a great way to introduce more consistent updates for Windows 10 users. Microsoft usually rolls out two large Windows 10 updates per year, usually in the spring and fall. More rapid updates will keep Windows 10 feeling fresh and continue to evolve the software throughout the year.

Speaking of which, next year could prove to be a pivotal year for Microsoft. On top of the Windows Feature Experience Pack, a recent report claimed Windows 10 could add support for Android apps, which has the potential to change the dynamic of Microsoft’s platform. We’ll keep an eye out to see how Microsoft’s newest program evolves in the coming weeks and months.

Here are the countries using Google and Apple’s COVID-19 Contact Tracing API

SARS-CoV-2, also known colloquially as just the coronavirus, has wreaked havoc across the world. Many countries shut down large parts of the economy in order to contain the spread of the virus. As countries reopen their economies, many health experts fear a “second wave”, ie. resurgence, of COVID-19. To prevent a second wave, public health experts are advocating that nations adopt contact tracing, ie. tracing all the people who have recently come into contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19 and then undertaking steps to isolate those individuals. Contact tracing is difficult to implement correctly without violating an individual’s privacy. The threat to personal privacy was severe enough for Google and Apple to collaborate on an API that developers of public health agencies can use to implement app-based contact tracing solutions. This contact tracing API, which Google and Apple call the Exposure Notification API, is designed to respect user privacy and security.

Once a user downloads an app that uses the Exposure Notification API and opts in to contact tracing, their device starts generating “proximity identifiers” that are changed every 15 minutes (on average). Via Bluetooth Low Energy, these “proximity identifiers” are periodically shared with nearby devices whose users have also opted into contact tracing. The proximity identifier is then processed on-device and does not reveal information about a user’s location or other personally identifiable information. Once a user confirms a positive diagnosis of COVID-19, they can share their diagnosis with the app they installed, which will then inform other users who have come into close contact with them in the last 14 days. For more information on how the Exposure Notification API works, we recommend reading our initial coverage.

Google first rolled out the Exposure Notification API for Android devices on May 20, 2020, as part of an update to Google Play Services, but its use is restricted to apps that have been developed by official public health agencies (for obvious reasons). However, neither Google nor Apple has made details public about the list of apps that have been whitelisted for using this API, so unless you’re constantly keeping up with the news, it’s hard to know which countries have adopted the API. We’ve previously covered some of the countries that have adopted the Exposure Notification API when we talked about the various open-source contact tracing projects that are out there. In this article, we have compiled a list of official contact tracing apps from designated health agencies from various countries that are using Google and Apple’s Exposure Notification API. Our list contains COVID-19 contact tracing apps that have been released or are currently in development.

We discovered Google’s hidden whitelist of application package names for the API. Subsequently, these package names were traced back to apps, their listing, and the countries they belong to. The information is compiled below in a table for easy reference. We have also added Google Play Store and Apple App Store links, if the app has been publicly released, as well as the source code and the official website link, wherever available. We will update the following tables as more countries/regions adopt the API.

Google rolls out new perks and Chrome OS features to facilitate creativity with Chromebooks

Chromebooks are often seen as productivity devices meant for business and education. But they are also great creative tools — a point Google hopes to get across with new updates and perks.

In a blog post on Tuesday, Google highlights how Chromebooks can be used for designing and editing photos and videos. To encourage Chromebook owners to explore their creative side, Google announced new perks that will provide access to special deals on apps. These perks include a few months of free premium access to WeVideo, Adobe Spark, Canva, and more. To view all the perks available with your Chromebook, visit this webpage.

Google also highlights improvements it recently made to handwriting recognition. With the changes, the on-screen keyboard is better at recognizing different types of handwriting and annotations. If you want to delete a word from a sentence, for example, simply cross it out with your stylus. Improvements like that make writing and editing on Chromebooks feel a lot more natural.

In case you’re skeptical of a Chromebook’s capabilities as a creative tool, Google commissioned artists to create new wallpapers for Chromebook built on Chromebook.

“To explore the creative potential of Chromebooks, our team worked with Dutch artist Rick Berkelmans, who runs a design studio in the Netherlands and recently began exploring digital illustration on Chromebook,” Google said. “Rick used the built-in Canvas app with a stylus to design wallpapers just for Chromebook, using a Chromebook.”

When put in the right hands, the results look fantastic and show the potential of Chromebooks for designers. For photographers and videographers, these devices can access many of the market’s most well-known apps, including Adobe Lightroom and Clipchamp.

If there’s an artist in your life, or if you want to explore your creative side, Chromebooks can do a lot more than access Google Docs. These updates and perks are a great way for Google to reach out to a new audiences, particularly with the busy holiday period just around the corner.
