The OnePlus Nord, 7, and 7T will get their Android 11 betas soon

We were originally promised OxygenOS 11 for the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7T in December, but then the update was delayed. Now, OnePlus has revealed that an OxygenOS 11 beta will be available for those devices and the OnePlus Nord very soon.

First thing’s first: the first OxygenOS 11 Open Beta build will be available for the OnePlus Nord sometime next week. Once the beta version is up to the company’s standards, it will proceed toward releasing a stable build, OnePlus said.

As for the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7T, the company said work on a beta build of OxygenOS 11 is still progressing.

As you may have heard, when porting Android 11 to the 7 and 7T series, we encountered a data decryption issue in these devices. We worked closely with Qualcomm and, with their support, we are already running a Closed Beta test.

Although OnePlus doesn’t have an exact timeframe, the company did say the first OxygenOS 11 Open Beta for the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7T will be released shortly. Hopefully, that means within the month. With work already being done on a closed beta, we’re hopefully a release will happen sooner rather than later.

While the betas should be available to these devices soon, OnePlus warned things could fluctuate. The proposed schedule will also vary depending on what model you purchased and from what carrier, including Verizon, T-Mobile, and others.

“Yet, we’ll work closely with [carrier partners] to deliver the best OxygenOS 11 experience for you at the earliest possible date, so stay tuned for the official announcement for the actual release,” OnePlus said.

Once those dates are revealed, we’ll be sure to let you know. If that’s not enough, OnePlus has a lot more on its plate coming up. The company is preparing to release a fitness tracker and smartwatch, while the OnePlus 9 launch is reportedly imminent.

“Windows is BACK” – Microsoft job post hints at major UI overhaul

Windows 10 was a definite change of direction for Microsoft when it launched back in 2015. Before it launched, Windows 8.1 was proving pretty unpopular as millions of users stuck to either 7 or XP. Windows 10 merged the best of everything that came before it and added new features as well, but most importantly, it was pushed as a free upgrade for all users. Rather than bump the version number up every time, the company pushed updates to Windows 10 to bring new features and UI changes. The 20H2 update, for example, brought UI changes to the start menu, but a bigger overhaul may be on the horizon according to a job listing from Microsoft.

As spotted by Thurrott, Microsoft recently published a job post for a senior software engineer who will “work with our key platform, Surface, and OEM partners to orchestrate and deliver a sweeping visual rejuvenation of Windows experiences to signal to our customers that Windows is BACK and ensure that Windows is considered the best user OS experience for customers”. This wording strongly suggests the company is working on a major UX overhaul coming sooner than later. Following news coverage of the job listing, Microsoft changed the job description to instead say that the position is aimed at “orchestrat[ing] and deliver[ing] experiences that ensure Windows is a great user experience for our customers.”

This is in line with previous reports that have talked about Microsoft’s plans for a major UX overhaul, code-named “Sun Valley”. And as I said before, the latest 20H2 update already comes with some minor UI changes, such as a simpler, more streamlined Start menu with simpler-looking tiles. So how will this renewed UI look? We may have seen hints of it with Windows 10X, a new version that guts most legacy features and components in favor of a lighter and more stable experience. Windows 10X isn’t meant to replace Windows 10, but some UX components of Windows 10X, which looks radically different from Windows 10, may come over to it. Of course, though, this is just speculation, and the company could opt to do something entirely different.

Reviewer Aamir Siddiqui liked the sound and call quality of the Buds Live, although it seems the active noise cancellation is a little lacking. Microsoft is building a new web-based Outlook app for Windows and Mac

As part of Microsoft’s “One Outlook” initiative, the company is reportedly planning to introduce a universal Outlook client based on the web app.

According to Windows Central, the universal Outlook Web app (codenamed Monarch) will eventually replace the default Mail & Calendar apps on Windows 10. The new app will also replace the many different Microsoft Outlook apps currently available, including Outlook Web, Outlook (Win32) for Windows, and Outlook for Mac.

Microsoft wants to replace the existing desktop clients with one app built with web technologies. The project will deliver Outlook as a single product, with the same user experience and codebase whether that be on Windows or Mac.

Notably, the upcoming Outlook app will be accessible to everyone whether they’re free Outlook consumers or commercial business customers, Windows Central said. Microsoft previously detailed its One Outlook vision in September of last year, saying it wanted to offer consumers an experience that feels native to the OS no matter their platform of choice.

Microsoft will reportedly preview Monarch at the end of 2021, with the aim to replace Mail & Calendar apps on Windows 10 in 2022. The company also has its sights set on replacing Outlook (Win32) for Windows. However, that will be a much more monumental task considering how embedded the service is in enterprise.

When Monarch does launch, it will reportedly offer OS integrations such as offline storage, share targets, notifications, and more. Windows Central claims Mail & Calendar apps for Windows 10 have been put into maintenance mode as Microsoft goes full steam ahead with its universal Outlook client. The apps will allegedly receive one final UI tweak as part of Windows 10’s Sun Valley update, but that’s it.

A leaked version of the Microsoft Outlook web app was spotted on Twitter by user @WinObs. A description for the app says One Outlook is only for “brave dogfooders,” which is essentially a warning that things are in the very early stages, even for internal testers. The Verge reports that the leaked app isn’t functional without a full internal Microsoft account, so consumers may not be able to test it out until the end of this year.

The first security update of 2021 is rolling out for Google Pixel and some Samsung Galaxy phones

Google is kicking off the first week of 2021 with a new set of monthly Android security patches. This month is notable because it marks the beginning of monthly updates without the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL (RIP!). We’ve still got patches for the Pixel 5, Pixel 4a 5G, Pixel 4a, Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL, Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL, Pixel 3, and the Pixel 3 XL, though. Moreover, Samsung is rolling out new updates to the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S9 series in select regions, bringing this same Security Patch Level (SPL).

Unlike last month’s Android security update, this update does not arrive alongside a Pixel Feature Drop. Furthermore, Google did not outline any “notable fixes” for the Pixel series, although there are various security improvements for the Android platform, Linux kernel, and vendor components. You can see all the fixes along with the accompanying devices in the chart below.

Here’s a preview of what’s new in One UI 3.1 on the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra

Samsung isn’t just preparing to release new phones with new designs and new specs. The company is also preparing to release One UI 3.1 with the Galaxy S21 series on January 14.

A new video released by Jimmy is Promo shows One UI 3.1 running on the Galaxy S21 Ultra. The new software update will reportedly include several small features aimed at improving your day-to-day experience, like Portrait Video and new call background videos.

Here’s what’s allegedly coming to One UI 3.1, which could launch with the new Galaxy S21 series:

  • Seamlessly work between tablet and phone: Pick up where you left off on other devices signed in to your Samsung account. Just tap the icon that appears on the Recents screen on your other device. The video claims the supported apps include Samsung Internet and Samsung Notes. Users will also be able to copy text, images, and more.
  • New call background videos
  • S Pen compatible: Air View and Air Command
  • Choose between Google Discover or Samsung free
  • Ratio 3:4
  • Records front and rear simultaneously and switch layout.
  • Portrait video
  • Eye comfort shield: Keep your eyes comfortable by limiting blue light and using warmer colors. Using at night can make it easier to fall asleep.

One of the biggest new features in One UI 3.1 is S Pen compatibility on the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Earlier today we saw leaked images of the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s S Pen, and it looks like the software will offer many of the same features found on the Note series.

While the Galaxy S21 series is expected to launch with One UI 3.1, it’s unclear when the update will be available for existing Samsung devices. Hopefully, some of Samsung’s more recent devices will get the update quickly, but we’ll have to wait and see what the company’s says at its January 14 event.
