It looks like the OnePlus software team is having a productive holiday season, as they just released the first Open Beta build of Android 11-based OxygenOS 11 for the OnePlus Nord. It was yesterday when the company shared its Android 11 update roadmap that included the OnePlus Nord and the OnePlus 7/7T series, promising that an OxygenOS Open Beta for the OnePlus Nord would go live this week. Keeping to its word, the Chinese OEM today announced the first public Android 11 beta for the OnePlus Nord.

You can grab the region-specific flashable ZIP file and use the Local upgrade method to switch from the stable branch to Open Beta (and vice-versa). Although your personal data shouldn’t be affected during upgrading to the Open Beta build, reverting back to the stable channel of OxygenOS will lead to a wipe, so do perform a backup beforehand.

The Android 11 Open Beta release is nearly 3GB in size so make sure you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network before downloading it. OnePlus also recommends you have at least 30% of battery left and 3GB of storage available on your device before you proceed to install the software update.

Samsung’s second-generation foldable phone has been available to buy for a while now and as we said in our Galaxy Z Fold 2 review, it’s pretty great! The Galaxy Z Fold 2 brings several improvements including a new hinge that can be stopped at any angle, a wider front screen, a pinhole camera instead of that awful notch, and far more. The OPPO Reno 5 Pro with MediaTek’s Dimensity 1000 Plus launches in India in 2 weeks

Chinese OEM OPPO debuted the Reno 5 5G series in China last month. Shortly after the launch, the company launched the Reno 5 4G in a few Asian markets, which featured a few minor upgrades over the Reno 4 Global. While the Reno 5 4G is yet to make it to India, the company is now gearing up to launch the Reno 5 Pro 5G in the country.

The OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G will be launched in India on January 18th, according to a new product page on the company’s website. The device will feature MediaTek’s Dimensity 1000 Plus chip, a curved 90Hz high refresh rate display, and 65W fast wired charging support. Although OPPO has a history of launching two different devices with the same marketing name in and outside of China, the specifications highlighted on the product page lead us to believe that the Reno 5 Pro 5G coming to India may be the same as the Chinese variant.

If that’s the case, then the upcoming device will feature a 6.55-inch FHD+ display with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels (via GSMArena). It will feature a quad-camera setup, with a 64MP primary camera, an 8MP ultrawide camera, a 2MP macro camera, and a 2MP depth sensor. Over on the front, the device will include a 32MP selfie shooter.

OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G color variants

The MediaTek Dimensity 1000 Plus on the Reno 5 Pro 5G will be paired with up to 12GB of RAM and up to 256GB of UFS 2.1 storage. Other specifications will include an in-display fingerprint scanner, a USB Type-C port, 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac dual-band Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 5.1. On the software front, the device will run ColorOS 11 based on Android 11 out of the box.

It’s worth noting that the OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G will be one of the first MediaTek Dimensity 1000 Plus powered devices to land in India, and it will likely be followed by similar offerings from Xiaomi, Realme, and Vivo.

Xiaomi will unveil the Redmi Note 9T this week in Europe

With the release of the Redmi Note 9 lineup, Xiaomi did a few things differently. While the Redmi series used to see new releases every 6 months or so (2019 gave us both the Redmi 7 series and the Redmi 8 series), the Redmi 9 series was released in early 2020 and saw new releases within the same series every couple of months (which also led to a very, very confusing lineup as I pointed out in a previous editorial). Confusing names aside, though, the phones are awesome, and the ones that got released in China look pretty good even if they further complicate Xiaomi’s branding. One of these phones, the Chinese Redmi Note 9 5G, is soon launching in Europe as the Redmi Note 9T.

Based on the Chinese Redmi Note 9 5G as we previously confirmed, the Redmi Note 9T is expected to come with the MediaTek Dimensity 800U SoC, a chipset that we’ve also seen from manufacturers from the likes of Realme with the Realme 7 5G. It features a centered round camera setup with a 48MP triple camera, a decently-sized 5,000 mAh battery, and MIUI 12 out of the box. Being a rebranded Redmi Note 9 5G, and having a Dimensity 800U processor, it also means that the device will be fully enabled for 5G, which is excellent news if you’re looking for a cheap device that can get into a 5G network. Plus, the Dimensity 800U processor is also one of the most capable in MediaTek’s lineup, which means that you’ll also get excellent performance, probably better than what you would expect from a normal Redmi Note device — hence the T.

Does all of this sound interesting to you? Then be on the lookout for the device’s unveiling on January 8th, where you’ll know more about the device’s availability in Europe as well as other corroborative details about the phone itself.

Are you planning on getting a Redmi Note 9T? Let us know down in the comments.

Moto G Power, Stylus, and Play: What we know of Motorola’s early 2021 budget phones

Motorola is gearing up to launch three new devices as part of its budget-friendly Moto G lineup. These include the Moto G Stylus (2021), the Moto G Power (2021), and the Moto G Play (2021). Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen a couple of leaks about these devices that have revealed quite a bit of information about their design and specifications. While Motorola still hasn’t made an official announcement about any of these devices, the latest leak gives us a nearly complete picture of what each device will look like.

The latest leak about the Moto G lineup for 2021 comes from leaker Nils Ahrensmeier. It includes live images and renders of the Moto G Stylus (2021), the Moto G Power (2021), and the Moto G Play (2021). These new images, coupled with the previous leaks, reveal almost all details about the devices. In case you’ve not been keeping up with our recent coverage, here’s everything we know about Motorola’s upcoming budget smartphones so far:

Moto G Stylus (2021)

The first leak concerning the Moto G Stylus (2021) popped up early in November last year, and it revealed that the device would feature modest spec upgrades over its predecessor. According to the leak, the Moto G Stylus (2021) will pack a 6.81-inch display with a resolution of 2400 x 1800 pixels and a hole-punch cutout in the top left corner. On the inside, the device will feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 675 chip, 4GB of RAM, and 64 or 128GB of storage. The device is also said to feature a quad-camera setup with a 48MP primary camera and a single 16MP selfie shooter.

Leaked Amazon listing Moto G Stylus 2021 Aurora Black

The leak further revealed that the Moto G Stylus (2021) would feature a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, a built-in stylus, and a 4,000mAh battery. Following the first leak, we spotted a premature Amazon listing for the device, which gave us our first look at its design. The listing showcased the device in all its glory, highlighting its rectangular camera island, USB Type-C port, 3.5mm headphone jack, and stylus.

Now, the latest leak gives us an even clearer picture of the Moto G Stylus (2021), thanks to a high-res render and a couple of live images. As you can see in the render attached below, the device looks to have a glossy black finish on the back panel with green/blue hues, a rectangular camera island in the top left corner, and the Moto logo bang in the center. The front features a hole-punch display with minimal bezels on three sides and a chunky chin. However, the live image showcases a different colorway with what looks to be a gray textured finish. The camera island and placement of the Moto logo remain the same.

A separate leak from renowned leaker OnLeaks suggests that Motorola may launch two very different versions of the Moto G Stylus (2021). The images attached above show the North American version, which is code-named “minsk” and has the model number XT2115. In contrast, the following images show the second version, which may be launched in the European market. At the moment, we don’t know the code-name or model number of the second version.

Moto G Stylus Europe leaked renders OnLeaks Moto G Stylus Europe leaked renders OnLeaks Moto G Stylus Europe leaked renders OnLeaks Moto G Stylus Europe leaked renders OnLeaks

As you can see, the most striking difference between the two versions is the camera island’s design. Unlike the North American version, the European version has a two-step camera module with a raised square lip around the quad-camera setup. The rear-mounted fingerprint scanner is the other major difference. Other than these two aspects, the European version of the Moto G Stylus (2021) looks almost the same as the North American version in terms of design. Motorola may offer different colorways in either region, but we don’t have enough evidence to comment on that at the moment.

Moto G Power (2021)

Back in November last year, OnLeaks had also shared renders of what he believed to be the Moto G10 Play. However, our Editor-in-Chief, Mishaal Rahman, later learned that the device seen in those renders was the Moto G Power (2021), which goes by the code-named “borneo” and model number XT2117.

Mishaal has also learned that the Moto G Power (2021) will feature a 6.55-inch (1600x720p) display, a 48MP+2MP+2MP triple camera setup, an 8MP selfie shooter, and a massive 5,000mAh battery. The device is expected to feature either the Snapdragon 460 or the Snapdragon 662 SoC.

Moto G Power 2021 leaked render live image Moto G Power 2021 leaked render live image

As seen in the previous leak, the Moto G Power (2021) features a  square camera module on the back centered over the Motorola logo. It features a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, a hole-punch cutout in the top left corner of the display, and a sizeable chin. The recently leaked live image of the device falls corroborates the design we saw in the previous leak. It also reveals that the device may feature a radial pattern on the back panel. Furthermore, we’ve also learned that the device will run Android 10 out of the box and it won’t feature NFC or dual SIM support.

Moto G Play (2021)

Finally, the Moto G Play (2021) goes by the code-name “guam” and model number XT2093 in North America. As you can see in the render attached below, it features a design similar to the Moto G Power (2021) but with a significantly smaller camera module that houses two sensors and a flash. The Motorola logo with the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner is placed right underneath the camera module. Over on the front, the device features thick bezels on all sides of the display and a teardrop-style notch for the single selfie camera.

Moto G Play 2021 leaked live image renders Moto G Play 2021 leaked live image renders

The leaked live image of the device further reveals that the back panel will have a dual-tone finish. It also reveals the placement of the volume rocker and power button. Furthermore, the leak reveals that the Moto G Play (2021) will pack Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 460 SoC, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. The device will include a 5MP selfie shooter, a 13MP primary camera, and a 2MP secondary sensor. Much like the Moto G Power (2021), the device will feature a large 5,000mAh battery.

As of now, we have no pricing or availability information about any of these devices. But since Motorola is rumored to launch the device in Q1 2021, we expect to learn more in the coming weeks. We’ll update this post as soon as we learn more about Motorola’s upcoming Moto G lineup.

Xiaomi launches Mi 10i with 108MP quad cameras, Snapdragon 750G, 33W fast charging, MIUI 12 in India

Xiaomi along with its spin-off brands Redmi and POCO have flooded the smartphone market with an enormous number of phones in each price range and category. Xiaomi’s position about the independent status of these brands varies with markets globally but they often end up sharing similar SKUs that are available with minor tweaks and different branding. Today, Xiaomi announces the Mi 10i 5G in India, wherein the “i” stands for India. Although the company claims it is a phone made for the Indian market, it shares the same design and almost the same specifications as the Mi 10T Lite and the Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G (China). The Xiaomi Mi 10i comes with a 108MP camera, 5G support, a 120Hz display, and more.

Starting with its display, the Xiaomi Mi 10i comes with a 6.67-inch Full HD+ LCD display with a hole-punch selfie camera in the center. The display sports a 120Hz refresh rate as well as supports variable refresh rate just like the Xiaomi Mi 10T and Mi 10T Pro. This means the refresh rate of the display can switch between six different settings — 30Hz, 48Hz, 50Hz, 60Hz, 90Hz, and 120Hz — to synchronize with the frame rate of the content that is being played. The display is protected under Gorilla Glass 5.

Xiaomi is powering the Mi 10i with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G mobile platform. The Snapdragon X52 modem part of the chipset supports both — mmWave and Sub-6 GHz — networks for 5G connectivity. The chipset is based on an 8nm design and the onboard CPU uses two Kryo 560 performance cores based on ARM’s Cortex-A77 along with six Cortex-A55 based efficiency cores. The Snapdragon 750G also features Adreno 619 GPU with Elite Gaming features. The Mi 10i comes with a choice between 6GB and 8GB LPDDR4X RAM and 64GB or 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage, which is further expandable using the microSD card.

One of the major highlights of the Mi 10i that sets it apart from the Mi 10T Lite is the 108MP Samsung ISOCELL HM2. This is a 1/1.52″ sensor and features a pixel size of 0.7μm, which is 15% smaller than the 0.8μm pixels ISOCELL HMX and HM1 sensors. Despite the smaller size, the sensor is claimed to be better than the predecessors because of Samsung’s improved light-retention ISOCELL Plus and Smart ISO technologies in the sensors. Along with the 108MP sensor, the Xiaomi Mi 10i uses an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, a 2MP macro camera, and a 2MP depth sensor. On the front, the Mi 10i features a 16MP selfie camera.

For long-lasting usage, the Xiaomi Mi 10i comes with a 4,820mAh battery and supports up to 33W Xiaomi Turbo charging. The 33W Turbo charger is also included within the retail package, unlike Xiaomi’s flagship — Mi 11 — that no does not come with a charger in the box. Notably, the smartphone comes with dual stereo speakers and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

In terms of software, the Mi 10i runs on MIUI 12 based on Android 10. The Android 11 update has already started rolling out for several MIUI-powered devices and should be available for the smartphone soon.

Price & Availability

The Xiaomi Mi 10i comes in three variants, with prices as following:

  • 6GB + 64GB – ₹20,999
  • 8GB + 128GB – ₹21,999
  • 8GB + 256GB – ₹23,999

It will be available starting January 7th via Amazon India, Mi.com, and a host of Xiaomi’s offline retail stores.

Google may be working on a new Nest Hub with a Soli radar for gestures

So, remember Soli? Yeah, I’m talking about those radar sensors that came with the Pixel 4 to let you sort-of control your phone using hand gestures. The Soli motion gestures on the Pixel 4 were very different from what we expected as they mostly just let you wave at your phone to skip a song, so Google didn’t add the requisite hardware on the Pixel 5. It never made much sense to have these gestures on a smartphone in the first place, after all. Fortunately, it looks like Google hasn’t given up on the idea behind Soli, and it looks like the upcoming version of the Nest Hub smart display may end up having a Soli radar.

A recent FCC certification filing (via Android Police) suggests that Google is working on some kind of “interactive device” with a display, which leads us to believe it could be a new smart display from the company. More importantly, the listing reveals that it will support for ~60GHz frequencies used by Google’s Soli radars. Now, before you pick up your pitchforks, consider why it actually makes sense for Google to bring back this dead feature. For starters, air gestures actually make way more sense in something like a smart home device rather than a smartphone, since smart home gadgets are typically not something that you need to carry in your pocket or in your backpack. Instead, a smart display like the Nest Hub actually stands on your table in a fixed position somewhere in your house. Google repurposing the technology for use in a Nest Hub makes more sense if the sensor they pack is much larger than the one in the Pixel 4, as you will theoretically be able to control the device without actually having to touch the screen. That will especially be useful in the kitchen where your hands might be full or dirty.

One of the documents suggests this Google-made device has a 14V wired power supply, which would make sense for something like a Google Home product. Image credits: Android Police

It’s also possible that Google will limit the use of the Soli radar for mere presence detection, as seen in the new Nest Thermostat. That would be disappointing since presence detection is not the kind of sophisticated use case we’re hoping to see from Soli, but there are genuine uses of presence sensing for smart displays. For example, Google has been testing a presence-based invocation of Google Assistant on the Nest Hub Max, and we could see this feature make its debut on the new Nest Hub product. Assuming it exists, of course.

What else do we know about this device? Its model name is “A4R-G4CVZ” according to the confidentiality request that was submitted to the FCC (which means that sadly we don’t have any product photos or any other key information). The title of one of the documents mention that it has Zigbee support, which is a strong hint that this is a smart home device of some sort. However, we can’t truly be sure that it’s a smart display until more information is revealed.
