A developer got Ubuntu Linux booting on the Apple iPhone 7

Back in March 2020 when Corellium presented Project Sandcastle to boot Android on the Apple iPhone 7 using the checkra1n jailbreak, it sparked hopes about the potential of OS-level aftermarket development on legacy iPhone models. Barring hardware failure, many of these devices may still have years of use ahead of them if power users can install any regular GNU/Linux distribution on them. In fact, a recent development has been brought to our attention which will help pave the way for the prolonged life of these old iPhone devices.

One developer by the name of “newhacker1746” on Reddit is taking the challenge of turning the iPhone 7 into a Linux-powered smartphone. Besides booting the ARM64 build of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS on an iPhone 7, the developer also managed to run the full-fledged graphical shell of the GNOME desktop environment on the device.

Keep in mind that the developer didn’t replace the contents of the internal NAND but rather managed to network boot the Ubuntu instance using a custom Linux kernel from Project Sandcastle. The developer has shared a very elaborate guide about how to make your own “iPhone 7 Ubuntu Edition”, and you can even follow the tutorial without worrying about jailbreaking the device. However, trying to get your iPhone 7 running on Ubuntu might not be a very gratifying experience for inexperienced users, since you still need to manually compile the kernel beforehand and access the pongoOS pre-boot execution environment using checkra1n.

A modder attempting to get Ubuntu running on an Apple iPhone 7 isn’t all too surprising, since this particular series is no stranger to the Linux kernel. The postmarketOS project comes to mind, which brought Linux to the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. While installing a GNU/Linux distribution like Ubuntu on an iPhone won’t give you the same experience as just running iOS outright, it would be immensely useful to squeeze decent performance out of an old device until it physically breaks. Remember, in the spirit of the legendary HTC HD2, it’s not about actually running the software, it’s about proving it can be done.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 is official, comes with 12GB GDDR6 at $329

NVIDIA launched the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti last month, but there were no signs of the RTX 3060. Well, today we have yet another desktop GPU from the company and one of the missing pieces from the lineup. The all-new GeForce RTX 3060 finally makes an official appearance featuring 12GB of GDDR6 memory, with 10 times more ray-tracing performance and support for DLSS as well as NVIDIA’s RTX apps.

Priced at $329, this could very well become one of the hottest selling mid-range GPUs. It comes with a higher boost clock speed, more memory, and a larger 16Gbps memory clock compared to the RTX 3060 Ti. It features 3584 CUDA cores, 25 RT-TFLOPs for ray tracing, 101 tensor-TFLOPs to power NVIDIA DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling), and a 192-bit memory interface. In terms of power, it is rated at 170W and the company recommends a 550W power supply for the same. NVIDIA is also introducing Resizable BAR to the GeForce RTX 30 series starting with the RTX 3060. With this PCIe-based tech, users with a compatible motherboard will have the ability to enable all of the GPU memory to be accessed by the CPU at once, providing a small gain in gaming performance.

This is the fifth desktop graphics processor under the RTX 30-series and is expected to be available in late February. Expect third-party board partners including ASUS, Colorful, EVGA, Gainward, Galaxy, Gigabyte, Innovision 3D, MSI, Palit, PNY, and Zotac to start shipping their products during the same timeframe. Along with the RTX 3060, NVIDIA today also officially announced the GeForce RTX 30-series mobile GPUs for gaming notebooks. The new range includes the RTX 3060, RTX 3070, and the RTX 3080, all in Max-Q configuration.

Here’s a look at the Galaxy S21’s custom colors, including Phantom Titanium

When Samsung unveils its Galaxy S21 series in two days, we could be in for a big surprise. It seems that in addition to the standard release of colors, Samsung could also launch a pallet of custom colors to provide users with much more variety than is typically featured in a new lineup of devices.

A few different sources released images of the Galaxy S21 series in custom colors. From what we can tell, “custom colors” just means Samsung is planning to release more colors outside of the standard palette. We’ve known for a while that Samsung would release the Galaxy S21 series in black, white, pink, and purple. The custom colors greatly expand on what we’ve seen leaked thus far.

Companies typically like to launch new devices in only a few colors, or launch new colors in the middle of a product’s lifecycle. Samsung is seemingly changing things up by launching its Galaxy S21 series in several colors right from the start, including shades of grey, brown, blue, and black. 91Mobiles claims the Galaxy S21 Ultra will come in a Phantom Titanium, while Roland Quandt shared an image of the S21 Ultra in five different colors.

The Galaxy S21 Plus will apparently come in five colors as well, including a red and light blue, while the Galaxy S21 will come in four colors. That’s a lot of options for people who are tired of seeing their smartphone of choice released in just one or two colors.

Based on the colors alone, Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S21 series looks like some of the most stylish series the company has ever released. There’s an option for everyone, and Samsung does a pretty good job of differentiating the models, with the Galaxy S21 Ultra featuring a darker color palette and the Galaxy S21 featuring brighter, more playful colors.

This is the Find X3 Pro, OPPO’s 2021 flagship 5G phone

Late last year, we reported on details for the OPPO Find X3 Pro, an upcoming flagship that would succeed the Find X2 Pro. Thanks to another leak, we now have our first look at what the Find X3 Pro will look like. Turns out, it features one of the more unique camera modules we’ve seen.

Images of the Find X3 Pro were shared on Voice.com by Evan Blass. The renders reveal the device will come in four different colors: black, white, blue, and what looks like copper. It’s a pretty standard affair in terms of colorways, although the fourth option does stand out from more traditional choices.

The overall design looks sleek and elegant, with curved edges and what we anticipate to be a nearly bezel-less display. Speaking of which, it was previously revealed the Find X3 Pro would feature a 6.7-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, even at native WQHD+ resolution. Unlike last year’s model, which only supported two discrete 60/120Hz refresh rate modes, OPPO’s new flagship will allegedly support an “adaptive dynamic frame rate” between 10-120Hz.

As for the Find X3 Pro’s camera setup, it’ll feature a quad-camera system with a wide-angle lens, ultra wide-angle lens, telephoto lens, and macro lens. According to Blass, OPPO’s system will feature two unannounced 50MP modules from Sony.

Meanwhile, the device will include SuperVOOC 2.0 / VOOC Air rapid wired and wireless charging, Snapdragon 888 chipset, 5G support, and a dual-body NFC antenna design, which will apparently allow users to make contactless payments without having to directly press a designated area on the back of a phone against a reader.

Based on what we’ve heard — and now what we’ve seen — the Find X3 Pro is shaping up to be an exciting flagship. According to Blass, we should expect OPPO to release the device in later March or early April, so we should see plenty more before then.

AMD unveils Ryzen 5000 mobile processors based on the 7nm Zen 3 architecture

AMD has taken the covers off its much anticipated AMD Ryzen 5000 mobile processors, heading to gaming notebooks and ultra-portables during 2021, and described in the company’s CES keynote as  “the most powerful PC processors ever built.” Following on from the Desktop range, revealed last October, there are two distinct ranges, the H-Series for gaming and the U-Series for portability.

Most products in the 7nm range boast AMD’s Zen 3 architecture (though a couple of the U-Series are stuck on Zen 2) matched up with Vega Compute units. The top-of-the-line U-Series chipset is the Ryzen 7 5800U, which offers a 1.9GHz clock, with a speed boost up to 4.4GHz. AMD claims that this will wipe the floor with the equivalent Intel Core i7-1165G7. The company also offers some pretty impressive stamina — suggesting 17.5 hours of continuous usage. Let’s take that one with a pinch of salt for now until we see it working on a real-world device, but it certainly sounds like a serious powerhouse.

H is for Gaming

For the gamers, there’s the H-series, spearheaded by the Ryzen 9 5980HS, an octa-core monster with 16 threads, and a 3.0GHz clock speed that maxes out at 4.8GHz – significantly faster than anything we’ve seen from AMD’s mobile chipsets before. If that’s not enough juice for you, there’s the Ryzen 5900HX, which has similar specs, but comes unlocked, a first for a mobile processor from AMD, allowing for overclocking. As such, it’s configured for TDPs above the 45w of the HS model. All these headline variants also boast 20MB of L3 cache.

All of that means that, at least on paper, these processors can handle more than Intel’s Tiger Lake H devices announced at CES, though, with more powerful Intel offerings promised by the Spring, they may not be able to make that boast for long.

Meanwhile, there are AMD Ryzen variants across the range, starting with the AMD Ryzen 3 5300U with its 4 cores and 8 threads, 15-watt TDP, 2.6GHz base frequency, boosted up to 3.8GHz, but with a mere 6MB L3 cache and working up through Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 configurations, up to those meaty gaming options in the Ryzen 9 range.

It’s not entirely clear why there are a couple of U-Series offerings that are on last year’s Zen 2 architecture, especially given that they all have a Zen 3 equivalent also launching. This could be a branding exercise, allowing OEMs to offer lower-priced devices boasting today’s model numbers at yesterday’s prices. All will become a lot clearer as some of the “1500 devices” that AMD believes will be launched using its chips during 2021, start to appear and get benchmarked.

ASUS ROG unveils new Strix and Zephyrus gaming laptops and the 13″ Flow X13

ASUS has unveiled a bunch of new products under its Republic of Gamers (ROG) brand at CES 2021. The company is bringing three new notebooks including the dual-screen ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE, Strix SCAR 17, and the unique 13-inch ROG Flow X13 gaming laptop with the XG Mobile external GPU. ASUS has also announced some new accessories including the ROG Claymore II gaming keyboard and the ROG Gladius III Wireless gaming mouse. Lastly, we have the new 32-inch ROG Swift PG32UQ 4K 144 Hz gaming monitor with HDMI 2.1 for console and PC gaming.

ROG Flow X13

Last year, ASUS launched the ROG Zephyrus G14, a unique ultra-portable gaming notebook powered by AMD’s Ryzen 4000 mobile processors. This year, the company is going a step ahead with the ROG Flow X13, a 13-inch ultra-portable gaming laptop offered with either a 120Hz FHD panel or a high-res 4K panel protected by Corning Gorilla glass and features a narrow-frame design with support for touch and stylus input. Both displays have a 16:10 aspect ratio, support Adaptive-Sync and are Pantone Validated. The notebook also comes with a convertible design so you can flip the screen around as well.

The ROG Flow X13 is powered by up to an AMD Ryzen 9 5980HS mobile processor and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 graphics. While it is said to last up to 10-hours when used for light work, the 100-watt USB-C PD charger can charge the notebook’s battery to 60% in just 39 minutes.

To give a boost in graphics power, the machine brings support for an external GPU. This is similar to what Razer did a few years back, but what ASUS is presenting right now is a considerably compact mobile external GPU enclosure called the XG Mobile. It can accommodate up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 graphics which sounds pretty crazy considering the size. Combining the ROG Flow X13 with the XG Mobile transforms the notebook into a performance beast that is said to be equivalent to full-sized gaming rigs. The XG Mobile comes with a proprietary eGPU connector that offers 63Gbps of bandwidth exclusively to graphics, which is technically faster than Thunderbolt based eGPUs. The XG Mobile also features a dedicated USB 3.2 Gen 2 link, that expands the I/O connectivity options and it also has an integrated 280W AC adapter, so it can charge the notebook at the same time.

ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE

The new Zephyrus Duo 15 SE is an upgrade to the Zephyrus Duo 15 from last year featuring a similar wide secondary screen, the ROG ScreenPad Plus. ASUS says that by using the secondary display, gamers get the advantage of more usable onscreen space for gaming and productive tasks. Just like the previous model, the ScreenPad Plus raises up by a few degrees when the laptop display is opened at a comfortable viewing angle.

The notebook will be offered with up to an AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX mobile processor and up to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 graphics. The display will be offered with a 120Hz 4K panel with 100% Adobe RGB color space coverage or a 300Hz FHD display with a 3ms response time and 100% sRGB color space coverage. Both panels will be PANTONE Validated and feature thin-bezel designs and Adaptive-Sync technology.

Apart from using the secondary display to browse the web, read emails, chat over instant messaging apps, ROG has worked closely with developers as well as partnered with XSplit Gamecaster to allow gamers to monitor their streams while gaming on the main display. For creators, ROG has partnered with Adobe for additional content creation tools available on the ScreenPad Plus. Other notable features include a  two-way AI Noise-Cancelation feature for clear communication, Dolby Atmos, and an upgraded Active Aerodynamic System Plus (AAS+) cooling system. The notebook also features new Arc Flow fans that are said to increase airflow by 13% over the previous generation, and ASUS is also using a liquid metal thermal compound, to cool the AMD CPU.

ROG Strix SCAR 17

Next is the ROG Strix SCAR 17, a powerful gaming notebook powered by the new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 graphics and up to an AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX mobile processor. This can be configured with up to 32GB of DDR-3200 MHz memory with the new Arc Flow fans and liquid-metal cooling. ASUS is aiming for premium eSports players with the SCAR 17. It comes with a 17-inch 360Hz FHD panel offering 3ms response time or an optional 165Hz WQHD panel with a DCI-P3 color gamut. The notebook also comes with a 90Whr battery that is said to last up to 12 hours of video playback on a single charge, along with support for 100-watt USB Type-C power adapters.

For the ones who care about aesthetics, the new SCAR 17 is said to be more compact than its predecessor, with a higher-density RGB light bar around the front edge of the chassis, an additional light strip under the display, and a set of three user-swappable hinge caps. ASUS is also introducing an optical-mechanical keyboard on the notebook featuring per-key RGB lighting, 1.9 mm key travel, and zero debounce delay. Other features include a quad-speaker design and Dolby Atmos sound enhancement, and a two-way AI Noise-Cancelation feature.

ROG Swift PG32UQ

We just witessed Acer announcing what it calls the first-ever 40-inch 4K UHD, 144Hz, HDR400 monitor with HDMI 2.1. Today, ASUS has launched the ROG Swift PG32UQ which is being touted as the world’s first 32-inch HDMI 2.1 gaming monitor. This one also comes with a 144Hz refresh rate with a 1ms moving picture response time (MPRT). It comes with two HDMI 2.1 ports to support up to 4K visuals at up to 120Hz on the latest gaming consoles – the Xbox Series X|S and the Sony PlayStation 5.

The monitor also comes with Display Stream Compression (DSC) technology, a compression standard for transporting ultra-high-definition video streams across a single interface at high speed with no perceptible loss of visual quality. Essentially what that means is that the monitor supports 4K 144Hz via a single DisplayPort 1.4 connection. Other notable features of the monitor include G-SYNC compatibility, DisplayHDR 600, 160% sRGB, and 98% DCI-P3 color gamut support, and is said to be factory pre-calibrated to ensure Delta E < 2 color accuracy.

ROG Claymore II and ROG Gladius III Wireless

ASUS also introduced its first mechanical RGB gaming keyboard with its own ROG RX Blue Optical Mechanical Switches. These switches are designed in a way to offer improved all-around RGB lighting, as well as near-zero debounce delay. ASUS also ensures a 100-million-keypress lifespan and the keyboard comes with a magnetic wrist rest and a detachable numpad. One can use the keyboard with wired USB-C or 2.4GHz wireless connections. The 4000mAh battery on the keyboard is said to provide up to 40-hours of use on a single charge, while the USB-C connection supports fast charging or USB passthrough for other devices. The keyboard comes with wireless Aura Sync lighting and will be offered with ROG RX Red Switches.

Lastly, the ROG Gladius III Wireless gaming mouse is the newest peripheral option from ASUS ROG which is said to offer 19,000-dpi. It comes with tri-mode connectivity with wired, wireless 2.4GHz RF, and Bluetooth modes. The mouse comes with a new Push-Fit Switch Socket II that supports both traditional 3-pin mechanical and 5-pin Omron optical micro switches, allowing easy swapping of switches. There is zero-click latency and the mouse features a flexible, low-drag ROG Paracord cable.

Pricing and Availability

All three notebooks including the ROG Flow X13, ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE, and ROG Strix SCAR 17 will be available in the first quarter of 2021. The new ROG Swift PG32UQ gaming monitor and new peripherals will be made available in Q2 2021.

Samsung’s next flagship Exynos will have an AMD GPU

Samsung on Tuesday reiterated that its partnership with AMD will indeed produce a next-generation Exynos chip with an AMD GPU. Speaking during the Exynos 2100 event, Dr. Inyup Kang, VP and GM of the System LSI division at Samsung, confirmed the ambitious plans for the future.

Samsung and AMD originally announced a partnership back in August of 2019, promising to bring AMD Radeon graphics technology to a future Exynos SoC. When the news was originally announced, there was speculation we’d see the partnership come to fruition around 2022, and Dr. Kang’s comments appear to corroborate those reports.

Samsung is reportedly designing its own GPUs, but development has apparently been too slow for Samsung’s liking, hence the partnership with AMD. At the time of the original report, it was speculated that AMD licensed its IP to Samsung while the two would collaborate on the design of the mobile GPU. Samsung has yet to reveal final details about the future Exynos processor with an AMD GPU.

When the partnership came about, Samsung lauded AMD as a leader in the industry, especially “in the GPU area.”

“We think that with this partnership, we will be able to leverage the GPU competitiveness of AMD to enhance the performance of not only our mobile SoCs, but also in other applications,” a Samsung spokesperson said.

If Samsung keeps to its timetable, we could get details for the Exynos chip with an AMD GPU later this year. That could then be followed by a flagship release, which could potentially be the Samsung Galaxy S22 series.

The partnership between the two companies should be mutually beneficial. AMD will gain a new source of revenue in the mobile market, while Samsung will have access to the technology that will take its mobile chips to the next level. While the partnership hasn’t yet produced anything of note, it could be a very different story come this time next year.
