Android 11 Update Tracker: List of major phones getting the latest release!

It’s that time of year again when Google releases the new version of its mobile operating system, and after a long few months of beta testing, the American tech giant is finally rolling out the stable version of Android 11. But of course, it’s not just Pixel users who are getting this update. A range of OEMs have announced that they plan to roll it out to their users, and as Android is an open-source operating system, we’ll no doubt see manufacturers unveil their own custom software that runs on Android 11. In case you’re looking for the answer to the question “when will my phone get Android 11?“, read on to find out. If you don’t find your device here, you can check if Android 11 custom ROMs are available for it.

Google

What’s great about owning a Pixel smartphone is that because it’s created by Google, you’re guaranteed to get the latest Android updates first. And that’s not changed in 2020 as the stable version of Android 11 has now landed on the current lineup of Pixel handsets.  As is often the case, you can expect a stock Android experience when you update your Pixel to the new version. Android 11 is available officially on the Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL, Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL, and Pixel 4a.

Xiaomi

Xiaomi has also been preparing for the eventual rollout of Android 11. Like OPPO, the company recently launched a beta testing program for its Android 11-based MIUI 12 update, and the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro are the first in the line across both Global and China branches. The Chinese OEM is expected to eventually reveal a new version of MIUI — MIUI 13 — with new features in the near future.

Google Play Games may soon let you add a home screen folder with your games

Google is working on adding a new feature to the Play Games app that will let you access all your installed games from the home screen. We’ve spotted new strings of code in the latest Google Play Games update that highlight how the feature will work once it rolls out with a future update.

An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by the developers in a future build.

Google Play Games v 2021.01.24213 just started rolling out on the Play Store. We decoded the APK and found the following new strings:

<string name="games__gamefolder__add_to_home_screen_prompt_add_folder">Add folder</string>
<string name="games__gamefolder__add_to_home_screen_prompt_continue">Continue</string>
<string name="games__gamefolder__add_to_home_screen_prompt_message">Find all your games in one place on the Android Home screen (beta feature)</string>
<string name="games__gamefolder__add_to_home_screen_prompt_setting_label">Add the Games folder to the Home screen (beta)</string>
<string name="games__gamefolder__add_to_home_screen_prompt_title">Let Google Play organize your games for you</string>
<string name="games__gamefolder__added_to_home_screen_confirmation_message">All set. Games folder is now on your Home screen.</string>
<string name="games__gamefolder__game_hidden_snackbar_message">Game is now hidden. To show it, go to Play Games settings.</string>
<string name="games__gamefolder__game_of_the_week">Game of the week</string>
<string name="games__gamefolder__games_folder_beta_notice">Beta feature</string>
<string name="games__gamefolder__name">Games</string>
<string name="games__gamefolder__open_play_games_content_description">Open Play Games app.</string>
<string name="games__gamefolder__show_game_folder_in_app_drawer_setting_label">Show the Games folder in the app list (beta)</string>
<string name="games__gamefolder__showing_games_folder_announcement">Showing \"Games folder\" page.</string>

The strings suggest that the upcoming feature will let you add a new Play Games folder to the home screen. The app will automatically populate this folder with all the games installed on your device, giving you easy access to the games in one convenient location. Along with the aforementioned strings, we found the icon that will be used for the Play Games Folder. This is what it looks like:

Google Play Games home screen folder icon

Furthermore, we managed to manually launch the activity that will be triggered when you tap on the game folder. As you can see in the attached screenshots, this game folder is unlike other folders that you can add to your home screen launcher. Instead of displaying app icons in a pop-up window like a regular folder, the game folder actually opens an activity in the Google Play Games app. This activity isn’t full screen, so you don’t leave your home screen when you open it. However, tapping on the arrow icon in the top right corner does redirect you to the Google Play Games app.

Google Play Games Game Folder

In case you’re wondering why you might want this feature, the answer is quite simple. It’s convenient. While you can create your own folder in the home screen launcher of your choice and add your games to it, most launchers require you to do this manually as they aren’t able to categorize games into a game folder automatically. And any time you install a new game, you have to add that game to the folder manually. The new Google Play Games folder automates this process for you, as the app can easily detect what apps are games by virtue of having access to Google Play data. This makes the upcoming Google Play Games folder a much more convenient alternative to regular folders.

As of now, Google hasn’t released any official information about the new Play Games folder. But since code related to the folder has already made it to the Google Play Games app, we expect it to roll out to users in the coming weeks. We’ll update this post as soon as the new folder starts rolling out to users.

These are the best laptops you can buy in January 2021

Apart from many tasks that one can achieve from a notebook, the best smartphones have gone way beyond. You can click amazing pictures and videos, binge watch your favorite TV shows, or even pay money without ever reaching for your wallet. But even to this date, most people continue to rely on laptops to get their work done faster and more efficiently. The initial days of the Covid-19 lockdown saw a decline in smartphone sales due to obvious reasons. However, at the same time, there was a huge demand for laptops as organizations scrambled to switch to a work from home setup.

There is a wide variety of laptops out there for almost every type of user. From gorgeous displays to long-lasting battery life, getting the right notebook is honestly not that difficult. Of course, you just need to look in the right place. It is best to assess all the factors before you go ahead and put your money down. Apart from choosing the right specs, you need to be mindful of the size and form factor. Of course, in the end, it all comes down to your needs and requirements. To make things easy, we have listed some of the best laptops that you should consider if you are planning to buy one in 2021. These are the best and top of the line options in various segments.

Navigate this guide:

Best Overall Laptop: Dell XPS 13 9310

dell xps 13 9300

The XPS 13 has quintessentially been one of the most influential Windows laptops in the past few years. Known for offering a solid balance of style and performance, the all-new XPS 13 9310 model offers up to an 11th-gen Intel Core i7-1185G7 processor, 16GB 4267MHz of LRDDR4x memory, and 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD. The sleek metal design complements the borderless display, which is also one of its highlight features. Speaking of which, Dell has been offering some of the best-looking displays on its XPS lineup. This one features a 13.4-inch 16:10 ratio screen, and you can opt for a 1200p or 2400p resolution. The port selection is limited to a couple of USB-C ports with Thunderbolt 4, a microSD card slot, and a headphone and mic combo jack. Dell claimed battery life of up to 14-hours on the full-HD+ model which sounds great for all-day workloads. It is also Intel Evo certified which means that it is specifically recommended by Intel to offer a premium experience to the end-user.

The Dell XPS 13 is a highly recommended premium notebook that offers a solid balance of style and performance. It is also one of the best ultrabooks out there.

Best Portable Gaming Laptop: ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14

asus rog zephyrus g14

Probably one of the most eye-catching notebooks of 2020, the Zephyrus G14 from ASUS is quite a versatile machine. It offers a fairly sleek 14-inch design and is also loaded with powerful CPU and GPU options to fulfill your gaming needs. The solid build, battery life, and that unique dot-matrix display on the lid add up to what can be called the best everyday gaming laptop. Notably, ASUS is offering the machine with AMD’s powerful Ryzen 4000 processor options as well as a 120Hz display. The only gripe we have is that it does not come with a built-in webcam for your Zoom meetings. Notably, ASUS has announced a new variant with the latest AMD Ryzen 5000 mobile processors, however, you need to wait before it reaches markets.

    ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14
The ROG Zephyrus G14 has been one of the most praised laptops offering one of the most unique designs along with powerful CPU options from AMD.

Best Laptop for Mac users: Apple MacBook Pro 16

apple macbook pro 16

The biggest and most powerful MacBook in years, the MacBook Pro 16 is an easy recommendation for power users. The notebook has been applauded for finally bringing back the scissor-style keyboard switches. It also comes with some of the best speaker systems on any laptop on the market. Of course, being a MacBook Pro, you can expect this machine to glide through your audio, video, or photo editing tasks without working up a sweat. Apple has also gone all-out when it comes to the hardware offering up to an 8-core Intel Core i9 processor, up to 16GB of 2666MHz DDR4 RAM, further expandable, and up to a whopping 8TB of SSD storage. Though, if you can delay your purchase to the fourth quarter of the year, we hope to see even better MacBook Pros with Apple silicon in them.

    Apple MacBook Pro 16
The MacBook Pro 16 is the most powerful notebook from Apple. It is great for power users, especially if you are a creative professional.

Best 17-inch Laptop: Dell XPS 17

dell xps 17 9700

Dell reintroduced a 17-inch XPS laptop in the first half of 2020, almost 10-year after we saw the last model. Offering all of the best features that we have seen on the recent XPS lineup, the XPS 17 simply enlarges the package. It also offers up to a 10th-gen Intel Core i9 processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 GPU making it an apt device for creative professionals and casual gamers. Additionally, you can expect the premium XPS styling, including the super-slim bezels, which reduces the laptop’s overall footprint down to a 15-inch notebook. This notebook is also a serious competitor if you are looking for a Windows alternative to the MacBook Pro 16.

    Dell XPS 17
Bringing the best of the XPS lineup, the XPS 17 is the best 17-inch laptop that offers the footprint of a 15-inch machine. It comes with an excellent display and a premium design that you cannot ignore.

Best Budget Gaming Laptop: ASUS TUF A15

asus tuf a15

AMD’s Ryzen 4000 series gave solid competition to Intel in 2020. Apart from mainstream laptops, the chipset also crept into the gaming segment. One such option, especially if you are looking for something on a budget, is the ASUS TUF A15 gaming notebook. Targeting entry-level gamers, the TUF A15 is a fairly affordable option if you want something powerful for your everyday work and gaming needs. The notebook isn’t the most premium-looking machine out there, but you get MIL-STD 810 certification and some RGB lighting for the keyboard. There is also the option for a 144Hz panel, although it isn’t the most color-accurate screen, which is expected from an entry-level gaming laptop.

    ASUS TUF A15
ASUS is offering a great entry-level gaming laptop loaded with AMD's power-packed Ryzen 4000 series processor and option of Nvidia GPUs.

Best Business Laptop: Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon

lenovo thinkpad x1 carbon

The ThinkPad series is a no brainer if you are looking for a solid business notebook. The X1 Carbon primarily witnessed under-the-hood upgrades in 2020, but that doesn’t make it any less of a recommendation. The 10th-Gen Intel vPro CPUs deliver only a slight performance boost compared to the previous generation. But if your business notebook is 3-4 years old, then the ThinkPad X1 Carbon is a wise choice. The laptop offers an ultraslim design that is highly durable, one of the best keyboards in its class, and good display options. We would also recommend looking at the HP Elite Dragonfly if you are willing to stretch your budget.

    Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon
The ThinkPad is a popular name when it comes to business laptops. The 8th-gen ThinkPad X1 Carbon is pretty much the same as the last year's model but brings new innards for improved performance.

Best Gaming Laptop: Razer Blade Pro 17

razer blade pro 17

Razer might still be an underdog, but the Razer Blade Pro 17 is undoubtedly the best gaming laptop out there. It has a fairly slim persona yet offers a healthy set of ports, including a full-size HDMI and Ethernet. There’s certainly some high-end hardware as well, including the options of a 300Hz display or a 4K 120Hz screen, NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q, and an eight-core Intel Core i7-10875H processor with 16GB RAM. If you want to go all-out, you can look at the Alienware m15 R3 or even the Gigabyte Aero 17. Still, in our opinion, Razer is offering a wider option for gamers and creative professionals in a package that would appeal to a wider audience.

    Razer Blade 17 Pro
The Razer Blade 17 Pro is the ultimate gaming machine that combines a stealthy look and beastly performance. Razer is offering this notebook with up to a 300Hz display or a 4K 120Hz option which is quite something.

Best affordable laptop for Mac users: Apple MacBook Air (M1)

apple macbook air m1 xda

Apple announced the new MacBook Air back in November 2020 which was a part of its first wave of products running on the first in-house chipset, the M1. Based on the 5nm node, the new M1 chipset is proving to be one of the biggest leaps for Apple in the computing world. It includes an 8-core CPU, a 16-core neural engine, and up to an 8-core GPU. Not only is the chipset offering better performance than the Intel processors, but it is also power efficient making the notebook last longer in terms of battery life. Now the overall design of the new MacBook Air is similar to the last-gen model, but anyone who is planning to get an affordable MacBook should not look any further. The notebook is available with 8GB of RAM and the option of either 256GB or 512GB SSD storage.

    Apple MacBook Air
The new MacBook Air with Apple's custom M1 chipset is a highly recommended notebook for someone looking to get into the Mac ecosystem and rock-solid performance for the price.

Best 2-in-1 Laptop: HP Spectre x360

hp spectre x360 13

If you are looking for the best 2-in-1 laptop that also looks impressive, then the HP Spectre x360 is a wise choice. Apart from offering strong performance, it features a vivid 13.3-inch 4K OLED touch display and an excellent keyboard. Compared to the previous-gen model, HP has trimmed down the areas around the display and keyboard, making it smaller in terms of the overall footprint. The notebook also offers fingerprint and face recognition for added security, while the improved trackpad offers a fluid experience.

    HP Spectre x360
One of the most premium 2-in-1 laptops, the HP Spectre x360 is for the ones who don't want to compromise on style and performance. It comes with a great 4K touchscreen display option along with Intel's latest 10th-gen CPUs

Best Chromebook: Acer Chromebook Spin 713

acer chromebook spin 713

Chromebooks are usually the best option for school and college students since they are usually cheap. Not the Acer Spin 713 though. It is one of the most powerful, pricey, and best Chromebooks out there. Since it is expensive, it also comes with powerful 10th-gen Intel CPU options going all the way from Core i3 to a Core i7. It also comes with a 13.5-inch 2256×1504 touchscreen, a 128GB NVMe SSD, and 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM, making it the fastest one out there. The Acer Spin 713 is also Project Athena certified, which means that it has a seal of approval from Intel when it comes to performance and battery life.

    Acer Chromebook Spin 713
The Acer Chromebook Spin 713 is one of the most powerful Chromebooks you'll be able to pick up today. With beefy specs that rival that of budget gaming laptops, performance will never be an issue.

Before you go ahead with any of the above-recommended notebooks, we would like you to know that CES 2021 wrapped earlier this month with a wide variety of new notebooks. Expect these to arrive in markets soon featuring the latest hardware from Intel, AMD and NVIDIA. We will be updating this guide as new models and variants start hitting shelves so keep an eye out.

Honor confirms it isn’t affected by U.S. trade bans like Huawei

In November 2020, after months and months of holding strong, Huawei finally relented and sold off Honor as an independent brand to a consortium of agents and dealers. This split allowed Honor to enter into partnerships with MediaTek, Qualcomm, and many others, something it could not do as long as it stuck along with Huawei. Honor’s CEO Mr. George Zhao Ming now confirms that the company is no longer constrained by the sanctions that have roadblocked Huawei for a good part of two years now.

In an interview with South China Morning Post, Honor CEO Mr. George Zhao Ming appeared very optimistic about the future, with a goal to make flagship smartphones and compete with everyone, including Huawei. This actually isn’t a new goal, as Honor frequently already competed against Huawei in several price brackets in several markets. And now with the US-sanction-on-Huawei roadblock out of the way, Honor has regained a lot of its locked potential.

In addition to resuming partnerships with Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, Mr. Zhao also confirmed that Honor is in talks with Google and expects to resume its partnership with the company. This means that Honor could bounce back at the global level with Google Mobile Services included on its smartphones. The newly launched Honor V40 5G could be the perfect vehicle for this, though this is us speculating and Mr. Zhao did not mention such plans. The brand tries to compete in the value-for-money segments, and a good phone with GMS is just what the company needs to compete at the global level.

Shedding Huawei also has benefits beyond just smartphones. Honor recently also launched the MagicBook Pro 2021, which is a product made possible with continued cooperation with Intel and Microsoft, amongst others. There’s certainly a lot of potential here, and even if you do not purchase their products yourself as a consumer, the net effect of the competition such a company brings along is bound to benefit the market at the end.

Google Play is lifting its ban on gambling and betting apps in some countries

The Google Play Store has strict policies against hosting gambling and betting apps in most countries. The platform currently only hosts such apps in Brazil, Ireland, France, and the UK. However, starting from March this year, Google is introducing a policy change that will allow gambling and betting apps in more countries.

According to a recent report from 9to5Google, Google recently announced an update for its Real-Money Gambling, Games, and Contests policy to allow gambling and betting apps in 15 more countries. These include Australia, Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Romania, Spain, Sweden, and the United States. As mentioned earlier, the updated policy will go into effect on March 1, 2021.

Once the policy goes into effect, developers will be able to publish apps offering online casino games, lotteries, sports betting, and daily fantasy sports in the aforementioned countries. But the eligibility criteria will vary depending on the region. To submit their apps to the Google Play Store, developers will first have to complete a unique application process. They’ll also have to ensure that their apps meet the eligibility requirements mentioned here. Furthermore, developers will only be allowed to publish specific kinds of betting and gambling apps in each location.

The updated Real-Money Gambling, Games, and Contests policy will prove to be beneficial for both developers and users. It will give developers a platform to reach more users, and it will provide some reassurance to users who previously had to download such apps from illegitimate sources. If you’re a developer who wishes to publish a betting or gambling app in the aforementioned regions, you can start your application process by following this link. Before you do that though, make sure you go through the eligibility requirements to ensure that your app abides by all necessary rules and regulations.
