MIUI 12 is the newest big release for Xiaomi smartphones, perhaps even bigger than an Android version jump. Features on Xiaomi devices are dictated more by their MIUI versions than the underlying Android version, so a MIUI version upgrade is an exciting event. The first batch of devices to receive the MIUI 12 stable update included the Xiaomi Mi 9, Redmi K20/Mi 9T, and Redmi K20 Pro/Mi 9T Pro. As we reach the end of June 2020, Xiaomi’s first phase of MIUI 12 rollout is complete, as many more devices have been added since the initial rollout. MIUI 12: Features

Generic flashing instructions are available at the bottom of this article. However, we advise users to refer to the device forums for specific flashing instructions for their device, in case there are any variations or special instructions that need to be followed.

Another important point to note: Xiaomi follows only a thin distinction between “beta stable” update and “stable” updates. Beta stable updates are only intended for users enrolled within the Mi Pilot beta testing program, meaning that builds assigned for this group will not install on devices with Mi Accounts that do not have the requisite permission. Once the Mi Pilot beta testers give positive feedback, the same build then gets opened up as a stable release, creating a lot of confusion — for instance, the same builds linked below might first fail to install, but then they will make an appearance through the official OTA. If you get the error message that the update is for closed beta testers only, you can sideload the update through TWRP.

Flashing Instructions for MIUI 12

Note that these are generic flashing instructions that should generally be applicable across Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices. However, there is a possibility that there is a variation that is unique to your device, so we strongly advise visiting your device forums for device-specific instructions.

Recovery ROM Installation for MIUI 12

Recovery ROMs come with a .zip file extension and can be installed either through the Local Update method from within MIUI, or through the Xiaomi stock recovery. You can also use a custom recovery like TWRP for installing these ROMs, though do note that device-specific instructions may differ in that case.

1. Local Update method:
   1. Transfer the download .zip file to your phone, and ensure you place the file in the “downloaded_rom” folder in the internal storage of your device. If no such folder exists, create one in your internal storage base directory.
   2. Within your phone, navigate to Settings > About Phone > System Update, and then press the three-dot icon in the top-right corner, and select “Choose Update Package”.
   3. If the “Choose Update Package” option is missing, tap on the MIUI logo 10 times to activate the option.
   4. Choose the downloaded .zip file.
   5. Wait for the update to install.
2. Recovery method:
   1. Rename the downloaded .zip file to update.zip and transfer it to the base directory of your phone’s internal storage.
   2. Reboot your phone into recovery mode by powering it off and then pressing both the Power and the Volume Up buttons together.
   3. Scroll to the “Install update.zip” option using the volume keys, and select the option using the power button.
   4. Wait for the update to install.
   5. Choose the “Reboot” option if your phone does not reboot by itself after installation is completed.

Fastboot ROM Installation for MIUI 12

Fastboot ROMs come with a .tgz file extension and require a Windows computer for the installation, as well as a phone with an unlocked bootloader. However, despite being comparatively more complicated to install than Recovery ROMs, Fastboot ROMs are sometimes the only way to boot into a working system. For instructions on unlocking the bootloader of your phone, check your device’s subforums on XDA.

1. Download MiFlash Tool on your Windows computer. The latest version can be found in Step 1 of this link. Once downloaded, extract the tool and install it. It is also advisable to have ADB and Fastboot installed, just in case you need it.
2. Reboot your phone into Download mode by powering it off and then pressing both the Power and Volume Down buttons together.
3. Connect your phone to the computer using the appropriate USB cable.
4. Download the Fastboot ROM .tgz file and extract it. Remember the extract location, as you will need to paste the address into MiFlash Tool.
5. Run MiFlash Tool on your Windows Computer and in the address bar within the tool, paste the extract location from Step 4.
6. Click “Refresh” within MiFlash and the app should automatically recognize your device.
7. Click “Run” within MiFlash to flash the ROM file to the device.
8. The progress bar within MiFlash will turn green, which indicates that the ROM was successfully installed. Your device should boot automatically to the new version.

Best Overall Smartphone: Apple iPhone 12

The Apple iPhone 12 is not the most capable smartphone right now — heck, it’s not even the most capable iPhone right now — but it tops this list because it’s the best purchase option for most people. Of course, phone enthusiasts would prefer the iPhone 12 Pro for its superior zooming capabilities or something like a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra for that bleeding-edge 120Hz display and a much longer list of features. But for the average consumer, those extras likely do not justify paying an extra several hundred dollars.

The standard iPhone 12 is also neither too big nor too small, has 5G support in every part of the world with 5G rollout, and is backed by a more developed and commonly-used ecosystem. It’s the safest choice for someone who just wants a phone that works. Of course, the phone itself is not lacking in performance, featuring the Apple A14 Bionic, and a primary camera that captures superb still photos and videos.

If you want to look at just the Android ecosystem, here are the best Android smartphones.

Best Affordable Premium Smartphone: OnePlus 9 Pro

This category is different from the above “best overall” category in that this is no longer looking at it from an average consumer perspective. This is for people who want more specs, more bells and whistles, but don’t want to pay the four-digit asking price of the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

The OnePlus 9 Pro is our choice here. It’s got a brilliant 120Hz OLED display that’s almost as good as the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s (it falls short in peak brightness by a hair), premium build quality, excellent haptics, and a really strong main and ultra-wide camera. In fact, the only area in which the Galaxy S21 Ultra clearly beats the OnePlus 9 Pro is in zooming prowess. But then the OnePlus 9 Pro charges much faster, and costs $250 less.

There may be readers who will push back at the idea of a $900-ish phone being called “affordable”, but four-digit pricing for top tier flagships have been a reality in the smartphone space for several years now, and the OnePlus 9 Pro offers virtually everything those phones do without crossing that mark.

Best Foldable: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2 takes this category almost by default, as the other viable contenders — the Huawei Mate X2 and Xiaomi Mi MIX Fold — are China-only products, and the flip-phone style foldables (Motorola Razr and Galaxy Z Flip) are not powerful enough to compete. But just because Galaxy Z Fold 2 earned a token victory doesn’t mean it’s not an excellent foldable phone. It’s still a stunning piece of hardware with two gorgeous screens, a very sturdy and solid hinge, and a capable Snapdragon 865+ SoC.

There are things we would like to see improved in the next generation with the Galaxy Z Fold 3, but as of right now, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is still the biggest proof that foldables are here to stay.

Best Smartphone Camera: Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra

With four strong cameras that cover focal lengths from 13mm to 240mm (not even factoring in digital zoom), the Galaxy S21 Ultra is the most versatile camera system around. The main 108MP sensor captures razor-sharp photos during the day, and at night can make do without night mode trickery due to its large sensor size. The ultra-wide is not the best ultra-wide around, but it’s still very good in terms of maintaining the sharpness and keeping consistent color science. The two zoom lenses are the best the industry has to offer right now, especially the Periscope lens that can capture 10x optical zoom photos. In fact, even up to 20x digital zoom, photos remain very usable for social media.

The rest of the phone is top-notch too: the best display in the industry, the best SoC in Android, the longest-lasting battery life in a flagship. The only minor gripes are the relatively high price and large overall size.

Best Mid-Tier Smartphone: Samsung Galaxy S20 FE

The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE was highly popular last year because it offered a flagship SoC and 120Hz Samsung AMOLED screen at a much lower price than the company’s top-tier Galaxy S and Note phones. In April 2021, the Galaxy S20 FE’s Snapdragon 865 can no longer be called flagship level, so this phone is now firmly a mid-ranger, which is a fitting place for this plasticky device anyway.

Still, that 120Hz screen is as vibrant as ever, and while the cameras here aren’t as groundbreaking as the S21 Ultra’s, it’s still very capable and versatile. If you want the Samsung flagship experience at a discount, this is worth a look.

Best Non-Conventional Smartphone: LG Wing

When LG released the weird Wing last year with its swivel design that revealed a second screen, it appeared to be a comeback of sorts for the South Korean tech company, whose mobile division had fallen on hard times.

Little did we all know, the LG Wing would be the last LG smartphone — at least for the foreseeable future, with the recent announcement that LG electronics is closing its mobile department. For a farewell product, the LG Wing is very noteworthy — it may not have the best cameras or processor, but it has a unique design that is not only a breath of fresh air in the sea of familiar slabs but also genuinely useful for people who frequently multitask.

LG promises continued software support for its already released products, so interested consumers have some assurance on that end.

One thing to note, even the very definition of “budget” differs from person to person, and a singular choice may not be able to properly appreciate the nuances of all individuals. If you’re looking for more options, here are some other great cheap Android phones for you to consider.

Best Phone not sold in the USA: Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra

 

Featuring a Snapdragon 888, 120Hz OLED display, a 50MP with the largest image sensor in the smartphone space, and a capable ultra-wide and Periscope zoom lens to boot, the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra may be the one slab phone that can challenge the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra for slab phone supremacy.

This also means there’s more consistency between photos captured by the main and ultra-wide camera.

Elsewhere, the Find X3 Pro has a brilliant 120Hz, WQHD+ 10-bit display panel that can display over a billion colors, and is powered by all the latest components like Snapdragon 888 and UFS 3.1. There is also a never-before-seen microscope camera that allows the phone to capture eerily close-up shots, like the ability to capture individual strands of fabric in your shirt. Acer has been on a roll so far this year, with the company now announcing yet another variant of the Nitro 5 gaming laptop in India. The company is now offering the notebook with the latest 11th-gen Intel Core H-series processor. The newest model sits alongside the AMD Ryzen 5 5600H model, which was launched last week, and the 10th-gen Intel Core-i5 model, announced as the first laptop in India with the new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 GPU last month.

The latest model is particularly targeted at casual gamers and esports enthusiasts. It is priced comparatively lower, at ₹69,990. Like the other two models, you get the same dated design with a plastic finish all around. The 15.6-inch IPS display comes with full-HD (1920 x 1080-pixels) resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate with a 3ms response time. The laptop is powered by the 11th-gen Intel Core i5-11300H, a quad-core processor with turbo clock speeds going up to 4.4GHz. The Nitro 5 gaming laptop will be offered in a single configuration with 8GB of DDR4 memory, expandable to 32GB, and a 512GB PCIe Gen3 SSD. The laptop also supports up to a 2TB HDD, but Acer doesn’t offer one with the laptop. There is also a secondary SSD slot available on the laptop for additional storage.

For connectivity, you get Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX 1650i, Bluetooth 5.1, while I/O ports include HDMI, RJ45 ethernet, a 3.5mm headphone and mic combo, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port with Thunderbolt 4, and a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port with power-off charging. The battery on the Nitro 5 is a 57.5WHr unit which is claimed to last up to 8.5 hours. Other features include Acer’s CoolBoost technology that uses dual fans on the inside and a quad exhaust port design to keep the Nitro 5 cool under heavy load and get consistent performance. You also get a four-zone RGB keyboard and a 720p webcam.

Telegram will soon let you schedule voice chats in channels

In March this year, Telegram rolled out a significant update that added Voice Chat support in Channels. The feature also got a couple of additional upgrades that improved the Voice Chat experience. Telegram is now rolling out another update on the beta channel that enhances the feature even further.

As per a recent TestingCatalog report, Telegram v7.7.0 has started rolling out on the beta channel, and it brings a new scheduling feature for Voice Chats. Thanks to this new feature, Channel admins will be able to schedule a voice chat for later.

To schedule a voice chat, admins will have to tap on the channel icon and three-dot settings menu, select the “Start Voice Chat” option, and then tap on the new “Schedule Voice Chat” option. They will then be able to pick a time and date and tap on the button at the bottom to schedule the voice chat.

As you can see in the screenshot attached below, a notification for the scheduled voice chat will appear at the top of the channel with a countdown visible to all members. The new scheduling feature is a handy addition that makes Telegram’s Voice Chats a more viable alternative to Clubhouse.

Along with scheduling support, Telegram will also let you change your name and profile description from the voice chat window without closing the ongoing chat. The app now also has a link to Telegram Features in the menu that redirects you to the Telegram tips channel. This will help new users get a hang of the messaging app.

Currently, the features mentioned above are only available on Telegram v7.7.0 on the beta channel. If you wish to try them out, you can download the latest Telegram beta release by following this link. Otherwise, you can wait for a couple of weeks for the features to roll out on the stable channel. We’ll update this post as soon as the Telegram v7.7.0 is available on the stable channel.

Sony reportedly planning to further push the PlayStation brand into mobile gaming

Sony has been capitalizing when it comes to exclusive game titles on the PlayStation platform. It is being reported that the company is now planning to push harder into the mobile gaming market. Sony has reportedly posted a job advertisement for the position of Head of Mobile, PlayStation Studios, SIE, which requires the candidate to “be responsible for building and scaling a team of mobile leaders and will serve as the Head of this new business unit within PlayStation Studios.”

The company already has a few games and apps available for mobile users, including Run Sackboy! Run!, Uncharted: Fortune Hunter, God of War | Mimir’s Vision AR app, as well as some PlayStation 4 PlayLink titles, including Supermassive’s Hidden Agenda and Flavourworks’ Erica. Sony also has a dedicated mobile publishing label, called PlayStation Mobile, Inc. It has been used to publish PlayStation games for PC, like Horizon, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, and Days Gone. The job description spotted by Euro Gamer also mentions that the candidate will have to “focus on successfully adapting PlayStation’s most popular franchises for mobile.”

What does this mean? Well, some of the most popular game titles from Sony’s well-known franchises might be adapted for mobile. I mean, who wouldn’t want to take control of Kratos and spar with the Greek gods on their smartphone? Sony has tested the waters when it comes to mobile gaming. The company made an effort to bring the PlayStation branding to Android with its Sony Xperia Play smartphone in 2011 that offered close to 60 classic PlayStation titles like Cool Boarders 2, Destruction Derby, MediEvil, and Syphon Filter.

But before we hype up the excitement, it might be a while before we see popular Sony PlayStation titles making their way to smartphones. That is because the job ad says a roadmap will need to be developed for a timeframe that could be three to five years.
