The successor to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 will have Arm’s new v9 CPU designs

Thanks to the ongoing global chip shortage, chip design firm Qualcomm is struggling to meet the demand for its premium-tier Snapdragon 888 chip, so they’ve resorted to launching products like the Snapdragon 860 and 778 in recent months. However, that doesn’t mean they aren’t still working on their next major chipset. We already know that Qualcomm is working on a new chipset aimed at high-performance laptops after they acquired Nuvia earlier this year, but we don’t expect products based on that design to launch until late next year at the earliest. Meanwhile, we now have the first details of Qualcomm’s next premium-tier chipset for mobile devices.

Famed leaker Evan Blass took to Twitter today to share some details on “SM8450”, the presumed part number for Qualcomm’s “next-gen premium system-on-chip.” The Snapdragon 888’s part number was “SM8350”, which is why we expect “SM8450” to be its successor. Given the lack of consistency in Qualcomm’s chip naming process, we have no idea what “SM8450” will be marketed as. Nonetheless, we now know what to expect from it thanks to a list of “key components” that Blass shared on Twitter.

According to Blass, SM8450 will integrate Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X65 5G modem-RF system. The Snapdragon X65 is the successor to the Snapdragon X60 modem integrated into the Snapdragon 888. The modem is built on a 4nm process just like the AP. Phones built on the SoC can support connecting to mmWave or sub-6GHz 5G frequencies on either non-standalone or standalone 5G networks.

The CPU consists of Qualcomm Kryo 780 cores “built on Arm Cortex v9 technology.” The Armv9 architecture was announced earlier this year, and the first CPU designs to be announced using the new technology were the Cortex-X2, Cortex-A710, and Cortex-A510. Thus, we expect the Snapdragon 888’s successor to be using these three CPU core designs, likely in a 1 x 3 x 4 configuration (1X Cortex-X2, 3X-Cortex-A710, 4X Cortex-A510.)

The GPU is Qualcomm’s Adreno 730, but we don’t have any technical details on it yet. The Snapdragon 888 had Qualcomm’s Adreno 660, though, and we can usually tell how Qualcomm’s GPU compare to one another by their names. The Adreno 730 could be a big step up from the Adreno 660, or it might not be.

Similarly, the integrated signal processor (ISP) is getting a bump to Spectra 680 from the Spectra 580 in the Snapdragon 888. The Spectra 580 was Qualcomm’s first Spectra with a triple ISP enabling triple concurrency. If we were to guess, the Spectra 680 could enable quadruple concurrency depending on how fast its processing speed is.

Other features mentioned in the leak include support for Qualcomm’s Aqstic WCD9380/WCD9385 audio codec, Qualcomm’s secure processing unit (SPU260), Qualcomm’s FastConnect 6900 subsystem for Bluetooth LE Audio/5.2 and Wi-Fi 6E, quad-channel package-on-package LPDDR5 RAM, Adreno 665 video processing unit (VPU), and Adreno 1195 display processing unit (DPU).

The IdeaPad Flex 5 is a surprisingly great notebook thanks to the powerful AMD Ryzen 4000 processor options.  It can offer some really good computing performance compared to its competitors that are selling for almost twice its price. It does come with some compromises though. It doesn’t have a premium design like an ultrabook, and the display isn’t the brightest one out there, but if you care about core performance, then you should go for this species with the Ryzen 7 4700U processor. As the name suggests, the Flex 5 comes with a 360-degree hinge so it can be used in different modes, while other notable features include a fingerprint scanner with a webcam shutter for security and a good set of I/O ports including an SD card slot.

Twitter launches Twitter Blue, a subscription service that adds new features

Twitter is one of the most popular social media sites in the world, but the company isn’t raking in a ton of money from its tens of millions of users because the service is free. A common refrain that you’ve probably heard before is that if the service is free, then you’re the product. While that’s oversimplifying things a bit, there’s no doubt that Twitter relies on its massive userbase to sell ads. With online ads becoming a less secure source of revenue, Twitter is launching Twitter Blue, the company’s first-ever paid subscription offering.

The subscription service was made official in a blog post published earlier today, though news of its announcement was leaked multiple times in the last few weeks. The service is rolling out first for users in Australia and Canada starting today, and it will include the following features:

  • Undo Tweet: This feature will let you recall a pending tweet before it’s sent out. This will be useful if you spot an error — say, a typo — in a tweet that you just hit “send” on. Think of it as Twitter’s version of Gmail’s “undo send.” You can customize how long you have to undo sending the tweet, up to a maximum time of 30 seconds.
  • Reader mode: This feature will make it easier to follow long tweet threads by decluttering the UI so you can focus on just the content.
  • Bookmark Folders: This feature will let you organize the tweets you’ve saved into folders.
  • Other perks: Customizable app icons, “fun” color themes, and dedicated subscription customer support, for now.
Twitter Blue subscription feature - undo tweet Twitter Blue subscription feature - reader mode Twitter Blue subscription feature - bookmark sort

Twitter Blue costs $3.49 CAD/$4.49 AUD in Canada and Australia respectively. Twitter says it will continue to build out even more features and perks over time, and we can also expect the service to launch in other regions in the future.

Personally, I don’t think Twitter Blue is worth paying for right now. The undo tweet feature only saves a little bit of hassle over just deleting and reposting, though it could save some marketers from accidentally publishing something they weren’t supposed to. The built-in bookmark folders feature is neat but your web browser’s bookmarks feature can accomplish the same thing. Reader mode is nice, but there are already popular (and free) alternatives. What do you think of Twitter Blue?

The Best Android TV Boxes and Sticks: Chromecast with Google TV, Nvidia Shield TV, and more!

Although smart TVs have managed to make their way into many households, there are still a lot of consumers stuck with the non-smart or ‘dumb’ TVs. Fortunately, there is a quick and easy way to make these ‘dumb’ TVs smart. All you have to do is attach an Android TV Box or Android TV Stick and you’ll get all the features that televisions running on the Android TV platform have. Note that there is no real difference between an Android TV Box and an Android TV Stick, other than the form factor and the fact that Sticks are generally budget-oriented and lacking some premium features.

Best Android TV Boxes in the US

There are quite a few Android TV boxes and streaming sticks on the market. To make your task of choosing an Android TV box easier, we’ve compiled a list of the best Android TV boxes and streaming sticks available right now.

Chromecast with Google TV

Google Chromecast with Google TV

Chromecast with Google TV is arguably one of the best Android TV sticks that you can buy in 2021. Unlike previous iterations of the Chromecast, it runs on the full Android TV operating system, along with the new Google TV experience on top. So until the existing Android TV models get the Google TV update, this Chromecast will actually provide you with a slightly better experience on content discovery.

It supports up to 4K HDR streaming at 60 fps as well as video formats such as HDR 10, HDR 10+, and Dolby Vision. So if you’re streaming content that supports these formats, you’ll get the best viewing experience. The device also packs a dedicated remote with voice input, so you won’t have to mess around with a phone app to control things.

The one drawback of the Chromecast with Google TV is its live TV integration. While it deeply integrates with YouTube TV, other live TV apps don’t get the same treatment (at least for the time being). On the specs front, the device is powered by the Amlogic S905X3 processor and packs 2GB of RAM as well as 8GB of storage. It also includes Wi-Fi 802.11ac (2.4GHz/ 5GHz) connectivity.

Nvidia Shield TV

Nvidia Shield TV

If you’re looking for something a little more powerful than the Chromecast with Google TV, Nvidia Shield TV is a good option. It includes everything you’ll get with the Chromecast, barring the new Google TV experience (at least for now). Apart from that, Nvidia Shield TV supports AI-enhanced upscaling to 4K.

In terms of the specs, it’s powered by an Nvidia Tegra X1+ processor and comes with 2GB of RAM, 8GB of onboard storage, and a microSD card slot for storage expansion. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11ac (2.4GHz/ 5GHz), Bluetooth 5.0 LE, and an Ethernet port.

Other features of this Android TV box (or should I say Android TV tube) include Dolby Atmos and DTS-X surround sound support, and a robust remote with voice control. Lastly, it can run the Nvidia GeForce Now game streaming service, something that you won’t get on streaming devices from other brands.

    Nvidia Shield TV
Nvidia Shield TV runs on Android TV 9 and comes with built-in Chromecast support.

Nvidia Shield TV Pro

Nvidia Shield TV Pro

The Shield TV Pro is even more powerful than the Nvidia Shield TV. It comes with all the features of the Shield TV, like 4K upscaling, Dolby Atmos and Vision, 4K streaming, GeForce Now support, and a remote with voice control. Plus, you get 3GB of RAM and 16GB of onboard storage. There are two full-size USB 3.0 ports on the device as well that can be used to plug USB flash drives or external hard disks for storage expansion.

Among other specifications, it is powered by the Nvidia Tegra X1+ processor and includes connectivity options such as Wi-Fi 802.11ac (2.4GHz/ 5GHz), Bluetooth 5.0 LE, and an Ethernet port.

If you’re looking for a really capable Android TV box that can also help you stream video games, this is it. Moreover, Nvidia Shield TV Pro can act like a fully-featured SmartThings Hub after being connected with a SmartThings Link.

TiVo Stream 4K

Tivo Stream 4K

If you’re looking for a budget Android TV box or streaming stick, the Tivo Stream 4K is your best bet. It’s one of the most affordable devices among our picks for the best Android TV boxes. The lower price tag doesn’t mean this TiVo streaming player is lacking in any department. It supports 4K streaming as well as video and audio standards such as Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Moreover, you get a remote with voice control.

In terms of the specs, it’s powered by an Amlogic S905Y2 processor and packs 2GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11ac (2.4GHz/ 5GHz) and Bluetooth 4.2.

TiVo Stream 4K also allows you to search across all your installed apps and create watch lists in one place so that you don’t have to stumble around multiple apps. Moreover, it offers recommendations for content from all your apps.

Dynalink Android TV box

Dynalink Android TV Box

Dynalink Android TV box is another affordable device that offers all the basics of a capable streaming media player. It supports 4K HDR streaming and comes with Dolby Audio support; however, it lacks Dolby Atmos and Vision support that is present in other popular streaming boxes. You do get the full Android TV experience and a remote with voice control. Like all other Android TV boxes, it also includes built-in Chromecast support.

On the specs front, it is powered by an Amlogic S905Y2 processor and packs 2GB of RAM as well as 8GB of storage. Additionally, there is Wi-Fi 802.11ac (2.4GHz/ 5GHz) and Bluetooth 4.2 for connectivity.

Best Android TV Boxes to buy in Europe

If you’re living in Europe, you can go for Chromecast with Google TV, Nvidia Shield TV or Nvidia Shield TV Pro. Or you can choose one of the following two good options.

Xiaomi Mi Box S

Mi Box S

Xiaomi’s Mi Box S is a decent Android TV-based streaming player despite being a few years old. It was originally launched with the Android TV 8.1 version but has since received the Android TV 9 update. It supports 4K HDR streaming and packs Dolby Audio and DTS support. Further, it comes with a full-size USB 2.0 port to connect external storage devices.

In terms of the specifications, you’ll get an Amlogic processor, 2GB of RAM, and 8GB of onboard storage. For connectivity, there is Wi-Fi 802.11ac (2.4GHz/ 5GHz) and Bluetooth 4.2. It also comes with a remote with voice control. Mi Box S is also known as Mi Box 4K in India.

Mi TV Stick

Xiaomi Mi TV Stick

The Mi TV Stick is a budget streaming media player from Xiaomi. Unlike most other options in this list, it doesn’t support 4K streaming but if you have a full-HD or HD TV lying around, Mi TV Stick is a rather good option to make it smart. The device is powered by an unnamed Cortex-A53 quad-core processor and packs 1GB of RAM as well as 8GB of onboard storage. For connectivity, you’ll get Wi-Fi 802.11ac (2.4GHz/ 5GHz). Moreover, the Mi TV Stick comes with a remote with voice control.

Best Android TV streaming devices in India

If you’re living in India, you won’t find the Nvidia Shield devices or the new Chromecast with Google TV; but you can purchase the Mi Box 4K and the Mi TV Stick. Further, there are a couple of other good options for Android TV boxes available in the country that you can choose from.

Motorola Media Stick

Motorola Media Stick

Motorola Media Stick is a 4K media streamer that is offered by Walmart-owned Indian e-commerce site Flipkart. Despite the Motorola branding, it’s not made by Motorola. Instead, Flipkart licenses the brand from Motorola. It’s a quite capable device and comes with 4K HDR streaming support as well as 4K upscaling capability. You also get Dolby Audio support as well as a remote with voice control.

It’s powered by an unnamed Cortex-A53 quad-core processor and packs 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. For connectivity needs, the company has added Wi-Fi 802.11ac (2.4GHz/ 5GHz) and Bluetooth.

    Motorola Media Stick
Motorola Media Stick is an Android TV streaming device that was launched in 2021 by Flipkart.

Nokia Media Streamer

Nokia Media Streamer

Same as the Motorola Media Stick, the Nokia Media Streamer is also offered by Walmart-owned India e-commerce site Flipkart. It only supports up to 1080p streaming and the Dolby Audio standard. The specifications of the Nokia device are fairly standard – you get an unnamed quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, and Wi-Fi 802.11ac (2.4GHz/ 5GHz).

There is built-in Chromecast support as well. So if you’re short on budget, Nokia Media Streamer or the Mi TV Stick are two of the decent options out there.

    Nokia Media Streamer
Nokia Media Streamer was launched in 2020 by Flipkart.

These are some of the best Android TV boxes and streaming sticks that you can purchase in the US, Europe, and India. Chromecast with Google TV is clearly the best value streaming device with Android TV, whereas if you want something powerful and gaming-focused, you can go for either of the two Nvidia Shield TV devices, depending on your budget. If you don’t plan to spend too much, TiVo Stream 4K offers everything that you need in a modern streaming player.

What are you planning to buy to make your ‘dumb’ TV smart? Let us know in the comments.

Does the Samsung Galaxy A52 support 5G?

It may seem silly to ask the question whether the Samsung Galaxy A52 actually supports 5G — after all, it’s even included in the name. But it’s important to note that not all 5G devices are the same. While the short and simple answer is yes, it does have 5G, there is much more nuance to it than that. Most carriers in the US will support the device and work perfectly with it, but you may need to adjust your expectations and expect different results, as opposed to seeing gigabit-speed downloads that you see in premium flagship devices. The situation is further complicated with the existence of the Galaxy A52 4G. We’ve extensively tested both, the Galaxy A52 5G (review) and the Galaxy A52 4G (review), so here’s the nuance behind this simple question.

Does the Samsung Galaxy A52 support 5G?

Yes, the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G supports 5G. It has the required bands that support the Sub-6Ghz network. However, it does not support the mmWave that yields gigabit download speeds that you often see advertised by the carriers. Taking a quick look at Samsung’s website tells us what 5G bands are supported by the Galaxy A52 5G.

Samsung Galaxy A52 5G Bands

However, it would be prudent to check what version of the phone you have, as some regions will omit the 5G branding. There’s a Samsung Galaxy A52 4G as well, and it looks exactly the same while sporting a different SoC and just 4G support. The Galaxy A52 4G only has 4G bands, and the usual 2G and 3G. Make sure to check the carrier’s website and see if the listing is actually the model you want to buy. If it’s unclear or you’re not certain, it’s better to get in touch with the carrier or company that’s selling it to double-check whether they’re selling the device you’re looking for.

If you don’t know what 5G is exactly and want to find out how it works, we have got an excellent guide explaining everything you need to know about 5G.

Currently, all US carriers support some of the above-mentioned 5G bands, but as always, you should check with the carrier before purchasing to see what speeds, and how reliable a service, you can expect to get where you’re based. The same is true for Europe and Asia. Most countries have service providers that support one or more of these bands, but it’s also important to note that 5G is still not everywhere, especially in developing countries. While it’s true that many larger cities have it, smaller ones and less busy, populated ones may not. Buying a 5G phone could increase your productivity and allow you to get tasks done quicker, but the Sub-6GHz band only really provides faster than LTE speeds, which are already very accessible and reliable in most places.

What’s the difference between Galaxy A52 4G and the Galaxy A52 5G?

Not a lot, actually. The 5G version has a higher-grade chipset, including the Snapdragon 750G SoC, while the 4G version has the slightly lower Snapdragon 720G. The difference isn’t major, but it’s still there. The most noticeable one however is in the display. The 5G variant supports 120Hz refresh rate while the 4G model is limited to 90Hz – the difference is there on paper and you can spot the change when you have both of them side by side. However, 90Hz is more than enough to provide a very smooth experience while navigating the device and playing some games. Luckily, both models feature the same dimensions, so if you are looking for the best cases to protect your Galaxy A52, we already have you covered.

That’s pretty much it. The 5G variant has a better chipset with slightly better processing and graphics power, a more responsive display, and, depending on the storage option you decide to go for, it might have more RAM as well. The base version of the 4G variant has 128GB storage and 4GB RAM, while the 5G model’s base version has 128GB storage and 6GB RAM. And of course, the difference is also on 5G support.

Which Galaxy A52 model should you buy?

Many regions will only sell the devices that are supported by the major carriers and operators in a given country. This is great as you – the customer – can easily walk into a store, pick one up and forget about it. However, as a technology-focused website, we feel it’s important to tell you what the main differences are between the two models, and what you should know before making up your mind and pulling the trigger on one of these devices.

There are a few ways this question can be answered. First, let’s start with the easiest one. If only the 4G model is sold in your country, it’s likely a good sign that 5G is not yet widely available, or that it may take longer to get decent and usable coverage that you can actually take advantage of. In this case, going for the 4G variant may be a better solution, but it would be a great idea to see if your preferred carrier has any updates on 5G in your area.

The Galaxy A52 4G is a feature-packed mid-ranger from Samsung. It brings a massive 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate panel, Snapdragon 720G SoC, a 64MP quad-camera, and a flagship-like experience at an affordable price tag.

If both the 4G and 5G models are sold in your region, it likely means that the next generation of mobile networks is already available. It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s supported locally, but it’s a good sign. Ensure that your local area is supported and if you need the slightly faster speed and the additional perks of the 5G model – compared to 4G – it will likely serve you better in the long term.

5G variants will mostly only be sold in countries where the demand is generally higher for such devices due to marketing and personal needs. If your region only offers the Galaxy A52 5G, it likely means that the coverage is good enough and network operators support the device to offer a reliable service. It’s best to check with your preferred network operator what the coverage, speeds, and limitations are in your area. However, 4G will still be supported and you can likely expect decent speeds across the board.

The Samsung Galaxy A52 5G is the latest mid-ranger from Samsung bringing features such as the 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display and support for 120Hz refresh rate, Snapdragon 750G SoC, a quad-camera setup and a flagship-like experience at an affordable price.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to product availability, personal requirements, location, and budget. If you know there is great 5G coverage where you live, want to experience faster speeds, and have an actual need for it, the Galaxy A52 5G will likely serve you well. If however, your area does not yet have great Sub-6Ghz coverage, you want to save money and are happy with the already existing 4G speeds, you won’t miss out on much and will still have a really great device and overall experience.
