Fossil removes several built-in watch faces from Gen 5 smartwatches

Fossil is rolling out a new software update for its Gen 5 lineup of smartwatches through the Google Play Store. The update brings a couple of new watch faces to the smartwatches but removes several pre-existing watch faces.

9to5Google notes that the Fossil Gen 5 lineup previously offered a catalog of 55 unique watch faces. However, the new update shrinks the catalog down to just 24 watch faces. As per a screenshot shared by Reddit user u/Zeisthegeek, the update only brings two new watch faces to the smartwatches. These include the “Fitness Digital” and “Dashboard Digital” watch faces, as shown below.

9to5Google notes that the update removes 33 watch faces from the Fossil Gen 5 lineup. Click on the section below to see the list of watch faces that have been removed with the latest update.

While Fossil hasn’t shared the reason behind its decision to remove existing watch faces or exactly which variants are affected by this change, 9to5Google suggests that the update likely affects the Fossil Gen 5, Gen 5E, and the Gen 5 LTE models. If you’re using one of the watch faces mentioned in the list above, installing the update will automatically switch your watch back to the default watch face. You can, however, roll back to the previous update and turn off auto-updates on your watch to use one of the removed watch faces for the time being. Alternatively, you can try out one of the several third-party watch faces available on the Google Play Store.

Facebook can reportedly read your WhatsApp messages

After WhatsApp shared its updated terms and privacy policy earlier this year, several rumors started circulating online, claiming that the company could read your private messages and share their contents with Facebook. WhatsApp vehemently denied these rumors and claimed that neither it nor Facebook could read your messages or hear your calls on the platform thanks to end-to-end encryption. It even took the opportunity to take a dig at Telegram, as it doesn’t offer end-to-end encryption. However, a new report claims that both WhatsApp and Facebook can somehow view the contents of your private messages.

The damning report comes from ProPublica, a non-profit investigative journalism organization with a solid track record. It claims (via 9to5Google) that both Facebook and WhatsApp can view the contents of your private WhatsApp messages. The report notes:

[An] assurance automatically appears on-screen before users send messages: “No one outside of this chat, not even WhatsApp, can read or listen to them.”

Those assurances are not true. WhatsApp has more than 1,000 contract workers filling floors of office buildings in Austin, Texas, Dublin and Singapore, where they examine millions of pieces of users’ content. Seated at computers in pods organized by work assignments, these hourly workers use special Facebook software to sift through streams of private messages, images and videos that have been reported by WhatsApp users as improper and then screened by the company’s artificial intelligence systems. These contractors pass judgment on whatever flashes on their screen — claims of everything from fraud or spam to child porn and potential terrorist plotting — typically in less than a minute.

Since WhatsApp maintains that it uses end-to-end encryption, the aforementioned moderators shouldn’t be able to see the contents of your messages. That’s because end-to-end encryption should mean that only the sender and the recipient have the ability to decrypt messages. But that doesn’t seem to be the case.

The report further notes:

Because WhatsApp’s content is encrypted, artificial intelligence systems can’t automatically scan all chats, images and videos, as they do on Facebook and Instagram. Instead, WhatsApp reviewers gain access to private content when users hit the “report” button on the app, identifying a message as allegedly violating the platform’s terms of service. This forwards five messages — the allegedly offending one along with the four previous ones in the exchange, including any images or videos — to WhatsApp in unscrambled form, according to former WhatsApp engineers and moderators. Automated systems then feed these tickets into “reactive” queues for contract workers to assess.

In response to the report, a WhatsApp spokesperson said: “We build WhatsApp in a manner that limits the data we collect while providing us tools to prevent spam, investigate threats, and ban those engaged in abuse, including based on user reports we receive. This work takes extraordinary effort from security experts and a valued trust and safety team that works tirelessly to help provide the world with private communication.” While the spokesperson didn’t directly address the alleged lack of end-to-end encryption, they added that “Based on the feedback we’ve received from users, we’re confident people understand when they make reports to WhatsApp we receive the content they send us.”

If the details mentioned in the ProPublica report are accurate, both Facebook and WhatsApp could get in some serious trouble. 9to5Google speculates that there might have been some misunderstanding during the investigation, and the moderators could be reviewing Facebook messages and not WhatsApp messages. But ProPublica claims that WhatsApp’s director of communications, Carl Woog, “acknowledged that teams of contractors in Austin and elsewhere review WhatsApp messages to identify and remove “the worst” abusers.” Woog also told ProPublica that the company doesn’t consider this work to be content moderation, and added, “We actually don’t typically use the term for WhatsApp.”

Furthermore, the report cites a confidential whistleblower complaint filed last year with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to solidify its claims. The complaint details WhatsApp’s use of external contractors, AI systems, and account information to “examine user messages, images and videos. It alleges that the company’s claims of protecting users’ privacy are false.” The SEC hasn’t taken any public action on this complaint.

It’s worth noting that the ProPublica report clarifies that WhatsApp moderators only get access to reported messages. Be that as it may, neither WhatsApp nor Facebook should be able to see the contents of your messages if they’re truly end-to-end encrypted.

New MagSafe Charger appears in FCC filings ahead of iPhone 13 launch

A new FCC filing from Apple has revealed a new version of the MagSafe Charger, hinting at a possibility of new MagSafe accessories joining the rumored iPhone 13 launch later this month.

First spotted by Dave Zatz (via 9to5Mac), FCC approved a new Apple magnetic charger with the model number A2548 on September 06, 2021. For reference, the current MagSafe Charger, which was unveiled alongside the iPhone 12, has model number A2140. Based on the updated model number, it can be deduced that the new magnetic charger approved by FCC could be a revised MagSafe Charger.

The FCC filing doesn’t reveal if the new charger offers any notable improvements over the existing model, such as faster charging or reverse wireless charging support.

FCC tested the new MagSafe charger with eight iPhone models, four of which are identified as iPhone 12 models. Meanwhile, the remaining four are described as “New Phone” and are very likely the iPhone 13 models.

The testing for the new charger was conducted by UL Verification Services using Apple’s 20W and 30W adapters in mid-August, and the final report was submitted to FCC on August 21.

A rumor dating back to July suggested that the iPhone 13 could use much larger wireless charging coil, increasing the surface area used for the wireless charging and allowing the phone to better manage heat build-up.

Whether the new MagSafe Charger will debut alongside the upcoming iPhone 13 series and offer any meaningful upgrade over the current magnetic charger remains to be seen. In any case, with the iPhone 13 launch event reportedly right around the corner, we won’t have to wait too long to find that out.

One UI 3.1.1 starts rolling out to the original Galaxy Fold

Samsung recently released One UI 3.1.1, the latest revision of its custom skin which brings along many new features for foldable phones. The new version made its debut on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 and has already made its way to the Galaxy Z Fold 2, Galaxy Flip 5G, and the original Galaxy Z Flip. At the time of announcing One UI 3.1.1, Samsung said the new version would make its way to the original Galaxy Z Fold a week later. As promised, the South Korean electronics giant has now started rolling out stable One UI 3.1.1 to the first Galaxy Z Fold.

The stable One UI 3.1.1 update for the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 5G has gone live in South Korea and parts of Europe, according to SamMobile. The update weighs 936.98MB, and besides new foldable features, it also brings along the latest September 2021 security patches.

After installing the new update, Galaxy Z Fold owners can look forward to many useful features optimized for the foldable form factor. The new features include the “Drag and Split” feature which allows users to open URLs in a split-screen view; Multi-Active Window support that lets users open up to three apps simultaneously; the “Natural Window Switching” feature which allows you to resize and reorient app windows however you want; the ability to pin apps to a persistent taskbar, and the Rotate All Apps feature that allows you to force any app to rotate to landscape orientation.

While the One UI 3.1.1 update for the Galaxy Z Fold is currently live in select regions only, we expect Samsung to expand the rollout to more markets soon.

Apart from Samsung’s foldable lineup, the One UI 3.1.1 update has also started rolling out to the Galaxy S20 series, Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Note 10, and Galaxy A52 5G.

WhatsApp will soon let you hide your “Last Seen” status from specific contacts

WhatsApp currently offers three visibility options for your Last Seen status, Profile Picture, and About. The messenger lets you either make these visible to all users who have your phone number, hide them from all users, or make them only visible to users in your contacts list. So if you want to hide your Last Seen status from specific contacts, you only have the option to hide it from everyone or limit visibility to your contacts and delete those contacts from your phone. But that might change soon.

WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new visibility option that will let you hide your Last Seen, Profile Picture, and About from specific contacts. According to WABetaInfo (via Android Police), the messenger is currently testing a new “My Contacts Except” option that will let you specify exactly which contacts you want to hide your Last Seen, Profile Picture, and About from. If this option sounds familiar, that’s because it’s already available for WhatsApp Status visibility on version 2.21.17.24 of the app.

As you can see in the attached screenshot, the new option will appear alongside the existing options. Once it goes live, you’ll be able to tap on it to add contacts to limit the information they see. While the screenshot only shows the new option in the Last Seen settings, WABetaInfo claims that it will be available for both your Profile Picture and About as well. It’s worth mentioning that if you hide your Last Seen, Profile Photo, or About for a specific contact, you won’t be able to see these things on their profile either.

At the moment, the new option isn’t available in the current WhatsApp beta release. But it should roll out on WhatsApp beta for iOS and Android soon. We’ll make sure to let you know as soon as it starts rolling out to users.
