Realme’s first tablet features budget specs and a low price tag

Realme started out as a budget smartphone sub-brand under OPPO before spinning off into its own company (but still under the BBK umbrella) in 2018. Since then, the company has launched dozens of smartphones at many different price points in Europe and Asia, putting the heat on established brands like Xiaomi and Samsung. Like other smartphone companies, Realme has expanded its reach into the audio accessory, lifestyle technology, and IoT markets. One category that Realme hasn’t dared to leap into thus far is tablets, though that’s changing today with the launch of the Realme Pad.

The Realme Pad is Realme’s first-ever tablet, and it features budget specs and an affordable price tag, as we’ve come to expect from the brand. If you’re looking for an iPad competitor, the Realme Pad isn’t it. However, if all you need is a cheap tablet to browse the Internet, watch videos, read books, play a few light games, and keep a kid entertained, this tablet may be for you.

 

Realme Pad: Specifications and features

The Realme Pad is a thin and light tablet with an aluminum alloy unibody construction. It measures 246.1 millimeters wide by 155.9 millimeters long, and it’s only 6.9 millimeters thick. The tablet’s LCD panel is quite wide, measuring 10.4 inches diagonally with a WUXGA+ resolution. The screen isn’t edge-to-edge by any means, as it only takes up 82.5% of the front, but that may be for the better when handing this tablet to a young child. The refresh rate is the standard 60Hz, which is not too surprising considering the internal hardware powering the tablet.

Under-the-hood, the Realme Pad is powered by MediaTek’s Helio G80 chip. This SoC won’t top any benchmarks, what with its octa-core CPU comprised of two Cortex-A75 and six Cortex-A55 cores and its dual-core Mali-G52 GPU. The SoC is paired with up to 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM and up to 128GB of eMMC 5.1 storage that appears to be expandable via a microSD card slot. The tablet supports cellular connectivity with its built-in modem, and it has a dual SIM card slot for provisioning the tablet to two carriers (though one of those slots doubles as the microSD card slot). Other connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 and Bluetooth 5.0, but the tablet doesn’t offer NFC support. To keep the tablet running, a 7100mAh battery is installed, which can be charged via the included 18W adapter.

The Realme Pad has all the basic multimedia features you’d expect from a tablet, including an 8MP front-facing camera for video calls, an 8MP rear-facing camera for scanning documents, a USB-C port on the side, a 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom right corner (and not a stylus holder as previously rumored), and quad speakers with Dolby Atmos.

The Realme Pad runs Realme UI 2.0 based on Android 11 out of the box. The tablet does come preloaded with Google’s Kids Space app, which could come in handy if you’re thinking of buying this tablet for a child.

Google Pay expands Wear OS support to more countries in Europe

Contactless payment via Google Pay is one of the major attractions of Wear OS smartwatches, allowing users to pay at stores by simply tapping their smartwatch. Although Google Pay on mobile is available in 40 countries, the wearable Google Pay app has remained restricted to few markets. But that’s changing as Google is expanding the Google Pay support on Wear OS to more markets.

Last month, Google rolled out Google Pay support on Wear OS to 16 countries, including Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Slovakia, Sweden, Taiwan, Ukraine, and the United Arab Emirates.

Now, Google is expanding Google Pay availability to 10 new countries, bringing the total count to 37 countries.

Starting today, we’re expanding support for Google Pay to 10 new countries/regions.

Once rolled out, Wear OS users in Austria, Bulgaria, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Portugal, Romania, and Singapore will be able to use their NFC-enabled smartwatch to make contactless payments. The Google Pay app is compatible with smartwatches running Wear OS 2 and above and can be downloaded from the Google Play Store, in case it’s not already installed on your smartwatch.

The wearable Google Pay app received a big UI refresh last month. With the new update, the app now follows Google’s Material You design language for smartwatches. While the update doesn’t bring any new features, it improves the swiping experience and shows larger previews of your stored cards. The updated Google Pay comes pre-installed on Samsung’s newest Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic smartwatches.

Xiaomi 11T series will be Xiaomi’s first phones with 3 years of OS updates

Following in Samsung and OnePlus’ footsteps, Xiaomi has now announced that it will offer three years of OS upgrades and four years of security patches for its upcoming Xiaomi 11T series. The company made this announcement just days ahead of a launch event, where it will unveil the Xiaomi 11T and the Xiaomi 11T Pro.

Talking about Xiaomi’s updated software update commitment, the company’s Head of Product & Technology, Albert Shan, said, “With the continuous improvement made to smartphone hardware, the life cycle of a smartphone is gradually lengthening, meaning users aren’t required to replace their smartphones as frequently. For this reason, more consumers place great importance on receiving the latest operating system updates, along with the latest features. Xiaomi is committed to providing users with industry-leading hardware and lasting performance.”

“In continuation of this commitment to users, Xiaomi is further extending the life cycle of Xiaomi’s smartphones by ensuring three generations of Android operating system updates. This way, users can choose to use their current devices for a longer period, and enjoy the latest features along with it. At the same time, we will also provide users with security updates that ensure their devices operate securely for a longer period of time,” he added.

Although the company hasn’t shared plans to extend this new software update commitment to other devices, it’s currently evaluating the possibility. When asked if the company would offer the same level of software support to other phones, a spokesperson told XDA that “Xiaomi is currently evaluating the possibility of bringing the extended Android system and security upgrades services to more Xiaomi devices.”

As mentioned earlier, Xiaomi isn’t the only Android OEM to offer three generations of OS upgrades and four years of security updates for its devices. Samsung was the first to announce this change with the Galaxy Note 20 series launch last year, and OnePlus recently followed suit. While the additional year of software and security updates is definitely a move in the right direction, the EU and its member states aren’t impressed. Earlier this year, the EU proposed a new law that would force all smartphone OEMs to offer up to five years of security updates for their devices. And recently, Germany’s Federal Government announced plans to extend the support timeline by an additional two years.

Xiaomi will officially unveil the Xiaomi 11T series on September 15th. Ahead of the launch, Xiaomi has confirmed that one of the devices in the lineup will feature 120W fast charging support. We’ve also seen leaked renders of the Xiaomi 11T Pro, giving us a good look at its design.

Pixel 6 teaser shows Google’s new smartphones in people’s hands

While rumors about the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro have been floating around for some time now, Google itself confirmed some of the speculations last month via a tweet. The tweet revealed some core aspects of the devices, including the presence of Google’s custom silicon — Tensor. Google had also shared renders of the device, giving us a great look at the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Today, Google has shared a Pixel 6 teaser video via the Made By Google YouTube channel that shows the phone in people’s hands.

The video starts with a Pixel 6 device being picked up from the table, and that’s the best visual of the phone shown in the entire video. The rest of the teaser focuses on the software aspect of the device and emphasizes that the new Pixel will adapt to usage patterns and will truly be a smartphone in terms of software. There are highlights of Google’s new Material You design language throughout the teaser, along with various UI elements like quick toggles, widgets, media controls, etc.

 

The teaser also shows off the new Google Tensor chip that will power the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro and allow Google to integrate the hardware and software aspects of the phone more seamlessly. The video ends with an expected launch time frame of Fall 2021. This falls in line with the launch of previous Pixel phones, barring the Pixel 5, which launched in the last week of September. With the iPhone 13 series launching soon, it’s safe to assume that Google will be eyeing a date that’s not too far off from the iPhone launch to compete with Apple’s latest smartphones.

The Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro are two of the most anticipated Android smartphones this year as they’ll feature Google’s own custom silicon. This is the first time in a while that Google is doing something different with the hardware, rather than simply relying on their software expertise.

Download: Google Calculator 8.0 and Google Clock 7.0 bring Material You redesigns

Yesterday, Google dropped Android 12 Beta 5. The fifth and final Android 12 beta fixes several bugs and refines the overall software experience in the run-up to the official release — which should come out in the next few weeks. As expected, the last beta doesn’t bring along any major new features, but there are few notable changes like a much faster universal search bar in the Pixel Launcher, new “Private Compute Core” privacy settings, and our first look at the new Live Space widget. In addition, the final beta release also comes with redesigned Google Clock and Google Calculator apps, both of which now follow Material You design guidelines.

Android 12 Beta 5 update: Here’s everything that’s new!

To begin, the Google Clock app version 7.0 now liberally uses larger bubbles for buttons and rounded cards for alarm and clock entries. The timer UI has received Material You flare as well, and all interactive elements have been moved down the page so that they’re easier to reach with one hand. As you would expect, the app now also supports Material You’s dynamic theming, and buttons/other UI elements now take on dominant colors of your current wallpaper.

Android 12 Beta 5 also ships with the Google Calculator version 8.0, and it too has received a Material You refresh. The new UI looks much more colorful and eye-catching than the Google Clock app, as you can see in the screenshots attached below.

 

Note that you’ll need Android 12 installed on your phone for these apps to change their colors based on your wallpaper. Sideloading these updates on older Android versions will only bring the rest of the apps’ redesign. Nearby Share is starting to roll out group transfers and “everyone” device visibility

Sharing files between Android phones used to be pretty tricky, because there wasn’t always a simple, fast, and unified way to wirelessly transfer files between devices. That changed last year with the launch of Nearby Share, which is essentially AirDrop for Android. The file-sharing service is baked into Google Play Services, which comes preinstalled on most Android devices and Chromebooks with Android support, so pretty much every Android user has an easy way to share files between one another.

Nearly one year after its launch, Nearby Share is about to get its most significant feature update. Some users, including myself, have spotted two new features in the file-sharing service.

The first one is group transfer support, which lets you share one or more files to up to 4 nearby users. Files aren’t transferred simultaneously to all recipients during a group transfer session but are instead sent to each recipient in quick succession. This gives the sender the opportunity to verify they’re sending their file(s) to the right recipient(s), and it also means the sender won’t have to reopen the Nearby Share dialog for each person they want to send their file(s) to.

As you can see in the screenshots embedded below, Nearby Share prompts you to “tap to share with more people” if there is more than one device to share to. Tapping on an additional device will add it to the queue of devices to transfer to, and you’ll have to wait for the recipients to accept the transfer in the order in which you sent your sharing requests. We haven’t spotted any changes in the group sharing feature that’s rolling out today compared to what we saw when we enabled it a few months ago, but there could be some subtle tweaks we haven’t noticed yet.

The second change is a tweak to the device visibility settings of Nearby Share. There’s a new “everyone” option that will make your device visible to anyone using Nearby Share, even if they’re not in your contacts list. If you’re worried about receiving unsolicited sharing requests, you can flip the “use everyone mode temporarily” toggle, which automatically switches the device visibility mode back to “contacts” after a few minutes. Apart from the new UI in Android 12, this feature is unchanged from when we saw it in development a few months ago.

These features are controlled by a server-side flag in Google Play Services and don’t seem to be tied to a particular OS version, though a few users — myself included — have only spotted them after updating to Android 12 Beta 5. One user named Rodrigo on Twitter told us they saw both features on their Xiaomi Mi 9T running Android 11, but we haven’t seen many other reports of these features going live.
