One UI 4 Beta changelog: Here’s what’s new in Samsung’s Android 12 update!

With the official Android 12 release reportedly coming in early October, smartphone OEMs are gearing up to release the latest version of Android to their high-end smartphones.

For many OEMs, the new Android version also presents the perfect opportunity to release a new version of their custom skin. We know OPPO will be releasing ColorOS 12 based on Android 12 later this week, and just yesterday, Samsung also announced One UI 4.0 Beta based on Android 12 for its Galaxy S21 lineup. The One UI 4 Beta program officially kicks off starting today in the U.S. for the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy S21 Ultra and will also be available to users in China, India, Germany, Poland, South Korea, and the UK in the coming days.

So what’s exactly new in One UI 4? Well, quite a lot. With One UI 4, Samsung is putting a big emphasis on device customization, which isn’t surprising considering customization and personalization is one of the central themes of Android 12. From redesigned homescreen widgets and enhanced Quick Settings panel to new camera features and revamped system apps, the latest version of One UI is packed with features and improvements.

But apart from these major highlights, there’s a lot of smaller improvements and quality of life changes across the board. To learn more about everything that’s new in One UI 4 Beta based on Android 12, check out the complete update changelog:

  • You can customize the list of apps that appear on the share panel to reduce clutter, and scroll left and right across the lists of apps and people for quicker access.
  • When you try to share pictures that have problems like poor focus or framing, you’ll get suggestions for fixing them, so your pictures always look their best.
• Camera
  • Enjoy a simpler, clearer layout with a preview that shows only the information you need. The scene optimizer button will only appear in Photo mode if there’s low light or you’re scanning a document. Settings for Portrait and Night modes are now more intuitive.
  • Lens and zoom: See the zoom level on the lens icons for easier zooming, even in modes that only support one lens.
  • Video that never misses a moment: Recording now starts immediately after you tap the Record button, instead when you release it. In Photo mode, touch and hold the Shutter button to start recording a video. Drag your finger to the Lock icon to continue recording without having to hold down the button.
  • Single take: Add extra time while recording in Single Take, so you don’t miss important moments. After the recording is finished, the content selection menu has been improved to help you easily choose the perfect shots.

  • Enhanced scan features: After scanning a document, you can zoom in for fine editing. When you scan a QR code. you can choose from several options depending on the type of QR code.

  • A green dot will appear in the upper right corner of the screen when any app is using the camera or microphone so you can see if an app is recording you without your consent. You can also use quick panel controls to temporarily block all apps from using the camera or microphone.
  • Take more control over apps that want to access your location. For apps that only need to know your general area, such as weather apps, you can allow access to your approximate location so they can’t determine exactly where you are.
  • Sometimes you need to copy sensitive information, like passwords or credit card numbers, but you don’t want it to fall into the wrong hands. You can choose to be notified any time an app accesses content copied to the clipboard in another app.

Revive your OnePlus Nord 2, Nord CE, or Nord N200 back to factory firmware with these unbrick packages

OnePlus smartphones are currently some of the best phones to get if you want to tinker with the software. However, tinkering with the software is not without its risks, and it can lead to you soft bricking your phone. This is the reason why OEMs have low-level flashing tools for devices they sell, so that customer support representatives can revive bricked devices. OnePlus does that as well, though they don’t publicly release them. Thankfully, members of the XDA community manage to get their hands on them, and now unbrick packages for the OnePlus Nord 2, OnePlus Nord CE, and the T-Mobile variant of the OnePlus Nord N200 are available for download on our forums. You’ll need these to restore these phones to factory firmware.

OnePlus Nord 2

The OnePlus Nord 2 is the company’s first smartphone to feature a MediaTek chip, which means the flashing process is a bit different from the company’s Qualcomm SoC-based models. The unbrick package, which makes use of the Fastboot interface of the device, was compiled by XDA Senior Member sakarya1980 with the help of XDA Recognized Developer phhusson and XDA Senior Member HofaTheRipper. The underlying firmware is based on OxygenOS 11.3.A.07 and the package is meant for the European variant of the OnePlus Nord 2.

Luckily, XDA Senior Member lzgmc has mirrored the required MsmDownloadTool package, so that you can use it to flash your OnePlus Nord N200 back to its factory firmware. Keep in mind that this particular version of the tool can’t be used on the unlocked Nord N200 variant.

OnePlus Nord N200

The OnePlus Nord N200 is the company’s newest budget phone. It runs on Android 11, and the company is promising three years of maintenance updates for the phone, more than its predecessor.

The MsmDownloadTool will completely wipe your phone during the flashing process. It will relock the bootloader of the target device as well. That’s not such a big deal, given that you can easily unlock again, but it’s still worth noting.

Xiaomi doesn’t have an official presence in several countries, including the US. But the company doesn’t stop you from importing its devices to unsupported regions. If you import a Xiaomi device to any such region, it should work without any issues, provided it supports your carrier’s bands. However, that won’t be the case if you reside in Cuba, Iran, Syria, North Korea, Sudan, or Crimea.

Although Xiaomi’s export policy prohibits the sale of its smartphones in the regions mentioned above, the company didn’t proactively block people’s devices if they imported them to these regions. But, of late, Xiaomi has been doing just that.

We’ve seen several reports highlighting this change on our forums, Reddit (via XiaomiAdictos), and Facebook, going back a few months. But it seems to have affected many more users this last week.

The reports suggest that after a few days of use, users in these regions are locked out of their phones, and they see the following message on the lockscreen:

Xiaomi policy does not permit sale or provision of the product to the territory in which you have attempted to activate it. Please contact the retailers directly for additional information.

A few users on our forums suggest that the issue is limited to devices activated in the regions mentioned above. They claim that it shouldn’t affect devices that were activated in their intended country of sale. But we can’t verify this claim at the moment. Interestingly, the issue doesn’t seem to affect users who have installed a custom ROM on their Xiaomi device.

It’s worth noting that Xiaomi’s Terms and Conditions clearly state that it prohibits buyers from exporting phones to select regions. However, it doesn’t specify that it will block phones exported to those regions.

14.2 The Contract and all Products sold are subject to applicable export control laws, including but not limited to the export control laws of. the US and Buyer’s own jurisdiction. The Buyer will not export any product purchased from the Seller to any country or territory or anywhere if the export control laws forbid it . Update: Xiaomi says it’s not targeting any specific market

In response to the aforementioned reports, Xiaomi has released a statement claiming that it’s “not targeting any specific markets.” A company spokesperson recently told Global Times that its move to block devices “is a cross-regional governance that aims to prevent smuggling through the grey market and protect user data security.”

The Xiaomi spokesperson also said that the company has “temporarily” locked some smartphones to prevent and investigate smuggling. “The investigation has achieved significant results, and the affected devices can be unlocked now,” they added.

At the moment, it isn’t clear if or when Xiaomi will unlock the affected devices. We’ll make sure to let you know as soon as we have more information.

One UI 4 Beta program lets Galaxy S21 users try out Android 12

Ahead of the iPhone 13 launch tomorrow, Samsung has just announced an incentive to keep some users from switching: a major software update for the Galaxy S21 series. Starting September 14th, owners of the Galaxy S21, S21+, or S21 Ultra in select countries can try out the Android 12 update ahead of its stable release. The One UI 4 Beta program officially begins tomorrow in the U.S., and we’ll of course be doing a hands-on of the new update when we get our hands on it, but for now, here’s a preview of what to expect.

Samsung confirmed today that the Galaxy S21’s One UI 4 Beta update will be based on Android 12, which means it will inherit a lot of the new features Google is introducing in the new OS version. The company says that One UI 4 “introduces new and improved customization and privacy capabilities that give users control over many aspects of their mobile experience” but falls short of confirming if Material You‘s wallpaper-based theming is included. However, they do state that there will be “a wealth of theme options [to] let you adjust the look and functionality of your device, giving you tools to configure your home screen, icons, notifications, wallpapers and much more.” We’ll have to wait and see what the settings menu looks like in the One UI 4 Beta to confirm how extensive the theming options really are, but Samsung is already one of the better OEMs when it comes to theming.

Samsung also confirms that One UI 4 brings new “redesigned, upgraded widgets” that offer “deep customization” from their visibility to their appearance. The company shared a screenshot of what some of their widgets look like. They also shared an image of the AR Emoji Studio app, which provides “a more robust and diverse array of emojis all in one place, so you can effortlessly navigate your options to enjoy richer communication experiences.”

Next, Samsung highlighted some of the new privacy and protection features available in the One UI 4 beta. A status bar indicator will alert the user when apps are using the camera or microphone. The new privacy dashboard shows the extent of permission usage by apps, offers a timeline of permission accesses, and provides easy access to manage permissions. These privacy features are part of Android 12, so they will be available on all devices running the new OS. Samsung says it has expanded upon Android 12’s privacy dashboard, though, as its software shows permissions history from the last seven days and not just the last 24 hours.

The One UI 4 Beta will be available for users with the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy S21 Ultra in China, India, Germany, Poland, South Korea, the UK, and the US. To enroll, you’ll need to download the Samsung Members app and click on the in-app banner once it shows up. Samsung will collect feedback from participants to fine-tune the One UI 4 user experience before rolling out the stable update later this year. Google plans to roll out Android 12 to Pixel phones in early October, so Samsung won’t be too far behind.

Xiaomi’s Smart Glasses are more than a wearable companion for your smartphone

Xiaomi is launching its first smart eyewear product today, the Xiaomi Smart Glasses. The company joins the ranks of Google, Snapchat, Nreal, and Lenovo in launching smart glasses, but unlike the products sold by those companies, Xiaomi’s offering doesn’t immerse the user with an augmented reality view of the world. Rather, they’re akin to the smart glasses sold by Amazon, Razer, and more recently, Facebook. Yet, Xiaomi says its new smart glasses are not just a secondary display for your smartphone.

In a press release, Xiaomi says its smart glasses weigh just 51g and look just like ordinary glasses, both of which were made possible by adopting microLED to lower the space needed in the glasses’ structural design. MicroLED has a higher pixel density, a longer lifespan, a simpler structure, and higher brightness than OLED while still having deep blacks due to its pixels being individually lit. The internal display chip measures 2.4mm x 2.02mm, with individual pixels sized at 4μm, allowing it to be fit within the frame of the glasses. To make it possible to see content through the Xiaomi Smart Glasses even under direct sunlight, the company opted for a monochrome display solution that reaches a peak brightness of 2 million nits. We don’t know which company is providing the microLED, though there are a few names in the industry that come to mind, like JBD and Plessey Semiconductor.

Xiaomi poses its smart glasses as an “independent smart wearable” with the ability to navigate, take photos, act as a teleprompter, and perform real-time text and photo translations on top of mirroring your phone’s notifications and displays. Since this product is aimed at China, it integrates Xiaomi’s XiaoAI Assistant as the primary interaction method. The Assistant picks the most important notifications from your phone to mirror, shows the phone number of callers on-screen, presents roads and maps in front of you, and transcribes audio into text with translations in real time.

The Xiaomi Smart Glasses feature dual beamforming microphones, speakers, a 5MP camera, an indicator light to alert others when the camera is in-use, a quad-core ARM chip, an integrated battery, a touch pad, a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo module, and the Android OS. Xiaomi hasn’t mentioned pricing, a release date, or availability, but it’s likely the product won’t see a launch outside of China.

This Dell Inspiron 15 is a great productivity laptop for $640 ($149 off)

The ongoing silicon shortages have led to short supplies of many electronics, but it’s still not too hard to get a new laptop at discounted prices. Samsung’s premium Galaxy Book Pro just dropped to $900, and there are a few worthwhile sales on mid-range laptops too. You can now get a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop with an 11th-gen Intel Core i5 processor and 12GB RAM for $639.99 from Dell’s eBay store, a savings of $149 from the usual price.

The specific configuration on sale has a 15.6-inch 1080p LED screen, a 512GB NVMe SSD, 12GB RAM (one 8GB module and one 4GB module), and a full-size keyboard with a number pad. You get an 11th-gen Intel Core i5-1135G7 for the processor, which is a 4-core/8-thread chip with a maximum speed of 4.2GHz. That’s decent hardware for the price, especially considering some laptops twice this price (like the 2020 MacBook Pro) still only have 8GB RAM.

AMD Radeon Software 21.9.1 adds support for Windows 11

Today, AMD released a new version of its graphics driver and Radeon Software with support for Windows 11. The latest update, version 21.9.1, also adds support for a new auto overclocking feature on the latest AMD hardware.

Support for Windows 11 means you can access all of the features included in AMD’s Radeon Software if you’re running a preview build. It’s also important as we approach the official release of Windows 11 on October 5th. Features like Radeon Boost, Radeon Anti-Lag, and Radeon Image Sharpening are all supported now, along with all the other tools the company offers. If anything wasn’t working correctly for you before, this update may help.

The other big addition, Auto Overclock, is also noteworthy. While overclocking hardware is common in the enthusiast community, not everything is willing to dive into the steps required to enable it, especially when it can be risky to do so. With Auto Overblock, AMD will automatically boost both the GPU and CPU as appropriate, giving you some extra performance for gaming and other tasks. However, you do need to have both an AMD CPU and GPU for this to work.

If you’re more into manual tuning, the latest release also includes a new section for CPU tuning, so you can overclock just the CPU and not the GPU.

Other highlights in this release include initial support for Deathloop, the Arkane-developed title launching this week, as well as the Call of Duty Vanguard open beta. It also enables support for AMD Smart Access Memory if you have Radeon RX 5000-series GPUs. This was previously only available for the latest Radeon RX 6000 series.

Finally, this update fixes a few known issues, which you can read below:

Bug fixes in AMD Radeon Software 21.9.1

• Visual artifacts in PAYDAY 2 may be observed during gameplay on some AMD Graphics products such as Radeon RX 6800 XT.
• Connecting two displays with large differences in resolution/refresh rates may cause flickering on Radeon RX Vega series graphics products.
• On Radeon RX 5500 XT Graphics, higher than expected memory clock speed and power consumption may be experienced when idle and the display’s resolution and refresh rate are set to specific values such as 1080p @ 60Hz.
• While playing Assassin’s Creed® Odyssey, driver timeouts or black screens may be experienced on some AMD Graphics products such as Radeon RX 480 Graphics when the user quickly navigates through the game menus or swiftly looks around an environment with their character.

There are also still some known issues in this release:

• Open Broadcaster Software may continue to run in the background after a user ends a recording session and closes the application.
• Driver timeouts may be experienced while playing a game & streaming a video simultaneously on some AMD Graphics products such as Radeon RX 500 Series Graphics.
• AMD Radeon Software may crash or become unresponsive while playing some DirectX® 11 games such as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds with multiple displays connected in extended mode.
• Playing Horizon Zero Dawn for an extended period may lead to a driver timeout or game crash on some AMD Graphics products such as Radeon RX 6700 XT.
• Enhanced Sync may cause a black screen to occur when enabled on some games and system configurations. Any users who may be experiencing issues with Enhanced Sync enabled should disable it as a temporary workaround.
• Radeon performance metrics and logging features may intermittently report extremely high and incorrect memory clock values.
• [AMD Link] Intermittent grey frame corruption might be observed when streaming with HEVC on certain configurations via an Internet connection. A workaround is to use the AVC encoding setting instead.
