DotOS 5.2 adds new features inspired by Android 12, including wallpaper-based theming and more

Last month, developers behind the DotOS custom ROM project teased a new Android 12-based dynamic theming engine for their upcoming release. The much-awaited new release — DotOS 5.2 — is finally here and besides the marquee system-wide theming system, it brings along several new features and changes including the redesigned Settings dashboard, a new Gaming Mode, a new Battery Manager app, new clock widgets, and much more.

The biggest highlight of DotOS 5.2 is of course the MonteWannabe 2.2 theming system which is inspired by Android 12’s new theming engine code-named “monet”. The new theming engine is based on kdrag0n’s powerful zcam-based color generation engine and Quinny899’s MonetCompact support library and is able to apply dynamic theming to more parts of the system UI than the previous version

Next up, DotOS 5.2 is adding a dedicated Gaming Mode inspired by Android 12’s Game Dashboard. When enabled, the Gaming Mode blocks out notifications and provides in-game controls for taking screenshots and initiating screen recording.

The latest release also adds a new Battery Manager app based on Buoy and offers several battery profiles to maximize your battery life.

Finally, DotOS 5.2 is adding new Android 12-style clock widgets along with a revamped Settings page.

Download: ASUS ZenFone 8 gets its second Android 12 Beta update

Back in May, ASUS released the first Android 12 beta build for the ZenFone 8, allowing developers and enthusiasts to try out the new software and help weed out critical bugs. The Taiwanese OEM is now following up with the second installment that fixes many of the bugs and issues reported by the early adopters.

ASUS ZenFone 8 Forums

The update (software version 31.0803.0403.54) is now available for ASUS ZenFone 8 users enrolled in the Android 12 beta program. There are no new features included in the new build, as this is mostly a bug-fixing update. Notably, the update comes with the September 2021 Android security patches. The build ID of the firmware is SKQ3.210717.001, which indicates that the underlying Android layer is based on the Beta 4 release.

Since this is still a beta release, you may find it a bit unpolished as a daily driver. Here are the known issues present in the Beta 2 build:

• System stability issues
• Camera stability issues
• Miracast stability issues
• Outdoor mode is not supported
• Fingerprint recognition rate is lower than desirable when device screen is off
• Battery status displayed in Settings may be inaccurate
• 3rd-party apps compatibility issues

Keep in mind that the new build will not be rolling out to ZenFone 8 users running the first Android 12 beta as a regular OTA update. Since this is part of the Developer Preview Program, it’s only available as a Fastboot-flashable package. After downloading the build from the link below, you need to extract the contents of the ZIP archive and execute the flashall_AFT.cmd script on Windows to flash the Beta 2 update. Linux and macOS users, however, might have to opt for manual flashing.

There’s no official word yet on a ZenUI-based public beta, let alone a stable release. But with the current beta program moving at a swift pace, it shouldn’t take long for ASUS to open up the latest software to more users.

Here’s a look at the Assistant weather widget in the Google App

After years of negligence, widgets will finally be getting the much-needed overhaul in Android 12. Google showed off the redesigned widgets coming to Android 12 at Google I/O 2021. Over the past couple of months, we have seen many of these widgets going live in Android 12 beta releases. The last Android 12 Beta 5 that rolled out last week brought the revamped clock widgets along with a “Paint Chips” widget and partially working “Live Space” widget. Now ahead of the Android 12 public release, we have spotted evidence of a brand new Assistant weather widget.

An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by the developers in a future build.

Google App 12.36.15 beta just rolled out on the Google Play Store, and it contains strings for a new Assistant weather widget.

The Assistant weather widget doesn’t seem to have rolled out yet, but we manually enabled the receiver and got it to show up in the widget picker. Here’s what it looks like:

As you can in the screenshots above, the design seems to be Material You-inspired. It doesn’t support dynamic colors yet though it does seem to respect the system-wide dark theme. The widget displays the current weather, your location, and high and low temperatures. It doesn’t quite match what was shown off at Google I/O, so there may be other forms of the widget in the works.

That’s all we know about the upcoming Assistant weather widget in Google App for now. We’ll be sure to let you know if we learn anything new about the widget in the coming weeks.

The Pixel 6 Fabric Case will come in many different colors

Google typically offers first-party fabric cases with each new Pixel phone. Although the company didn’t release a fabric case for the recently launched Pixel 5a, it seems like the company will be offering fabric cases for the upcoming Pixel 6 duo.

Listings of the upcoming Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro fabric cases have been spotted on North American mobile accessory distributor VoiceComm‘s website (via @rquandt). The listings reveal that Google will offer fabric cases for the Pixel 6 in three colorways, while the flagship Pixel 6 Pro will receive four options. These include:

• Pixel 6: Stormy Sky, Light Rain, and Cotton Candy
• Pixel 6 Pro: Stormy Sky, Light Frost, Golden Glow, and Soft Sage

The listings also mention that the cases will retail for $29, and they include the following feature description:

• Stylish colors and machine-washable fabric keep the case looking great season after season
• The slim, raised-edge design helps keep the screen and camera safe from scratches
• Uses over 70% recycled material, including fabric made from recycled plastic water bottles
• It’s made to fit the Pixel perfectly, so users can still use wireless charging and squeeze the sides to talk to Google Assistant
• Keep the case on for wireless charging or using Battery Share

While this description could be a placeholder, it’s interesting to note that it mentions both Active Edge support and Battery Share. For the unaware, the last two Pixel devices didn’t offer both these features together; the Pixel 4 offered Active Edge support but not Battery Share, and the Pixel 5 had Battery Share but no Active Edge support. This leads us to believe that it’s not just placeholder text, and the Pixel 6 series might bring back Active Edge support, which Google dropped from the Pixel like with the Pixel 4a.

At the moment, we can’t confirm whether the Pixel 6 series will feature both Active Edge support and Battery Share or not. We’ll make sure to let you know as soon as we have more info.

Apple releases iOS 14.8 to fix new zero-click exploit allegedly used by NSO Group

Apple has released iOS 14.8 with some important security patches. This update could be the last iOS 14 receives, as iOS 15’s release nears alongside the launch of the new iPhone 13. Apple, however, could be allowing users to install future security updates without having to update to the next major OS version.

A week ago, The Citizen Lab notified Apple about a new zero-day zero-click exploit targeting iOS, iPadOS, watchOS and macOS users through iMessage. An attacker would be able to gain access to sensitive information, including the messages, call logs, and emails of the victim, in addition to the device’s camera and microphone. The exploit, FORCEDENTRY, has originated in Israel and was distributed by NSO Group to governments around the world. It took Apple a week to fix it, and it is recommended that all users update their devices as soon as possible.

Apart from iOS 14.8, Apple has also released security updates across iPadOS, watchOS, and macOS. In a support document, Apple lists the following fixes:

• CoreGraphics
  • Available for: iPhone 6s and later, iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 2 and later, iPad 5th generation and later, iPad mini 4 and later, and iPod touch (7th generation)
  • Impact: Processing a maliciously crafted PDF may lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.
  • Description: An integer overflow was addressed with improved input validation.
  • CVE-2021-30860: The Citizen Lab
• WebKit
  • Available for: iPhone 6s and later, iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 2 and later, iPad 5th generation and later, iPad mini 4 and later, and iPod touch (7th generation)
  • Impact: Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.
  • Description: A use after free issue was addressed with improved memory management.
  • CVE-2021-30858: an anonymous researcher

Here’s how you can watch the iPhone 13 launch event

Apple’s upcoming special event, California Streaming, is upon us! Apple is expected to release a wide range of products at the event, including the iPhone 13 lineup, the Apple Watch Series 7, and the AirPods 3. We’re only a few hours away from the big reveal, so you must be wondering, how do I watch the iPhone 13 launch event?

California Streaming will be a virtual event, similar to Apple’s past few events, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The switch to the virtual format has allowed Apple to explore more creative ways to deliver its latest announcements. Apple takes advantage of that and records high-quality productions with outstanding special effects. • Apple’s official YouTube live stream: If you’d rather use YouTube — maybe to cast the event and watch it on a big screen — you can set a reminder on the live stream placeholder on Apple’s YouTube channel. Once the actual event goes live, you’ll be able to watch it there.
• Apple Developer app: The Apple Developer app is available on iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and tvOS. So it’s also an option to access the live stream if you prefer it over the previous options.
• Apple TV app: The Apple TV app is available on most popular Smart TVs. If you have a supported TV, you can watch the event through the app.

In case you miss the live stream, you’ll still be able to rewatch the event on Apple’s website and YouTube, so don’t worry if you miss (parts of) it.

One UI 4 Beta changelog: Here’s what’s new in Samsung’s Android 12 update!

With the official Android 12 release reportedly coming in early October, smartphone OEMs are gearing up to release the latest version of Android to their high-end smartphones.

For many OEMs, the new Android version also presents the perfect opportunity to release a new version of their custom skin. We know OPPO will be releasing ColorOS 12 based on Android 12 later this week, and just yesterday, Samsung also announced One UI 4.0 Beta based on Android 12 for its Galaxy S21 lineup. The One UI 4 Beta program officially kicks off starting today in the U.S. for the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy S21 Ultra and will also be available to users in China, India, Germany, Poland, South Korea, and the UK in the coming days.

So what’s exactly new in One UI 4? Well, quite a lot. With One UI 4, Samsung is putting a big emphasis on device customization, which isn’t surprising considering customization and personalization is one of the central themes of Android 12. From redesigned homescreen widgets and enhanced Quick Settings panel to new camera features and revamped system apps, the latest version of One UI is packed with features and improvements.

  • When you try to share pictures that have problems like poor focus or framing, you’ll get suggestions for fixing them, so your pictures always look their best.
• Camera
  • Enjoy a simpler, clearer layout with a preview that shows only the information you need. The scene optimizer button will only appear in Photo mode if there’s low light or you’re scanning a document. Settings for Portrait and Night modes are now more intuitive.

• Privacy
  • See which apps are accessing sensitive permissions such as Location, Camera, or Microphone in Permission usage history. You can deny permissions for any apps you don’t feel comfortable with.
  • A green dot will appear in the upper right corner of the screen when any app is using the camera or microphone so you can see if an app is recording you without your consent. You can also use quick panel controls to temporarily block all apps from using the camera or microphone.
  • Take more control over apps that want to access your location. For apps that only need to know your general area, such as weather apps, you can allow access to your approximate location so they can’t determine exactly where you are.
  • Sometimes you need to copy sensitive information, like passwords or credit card numbers, but you don’t want it to fall into the wrong hands. You can choose to be notified any time an app accesses content copied to the clipboard in another app.
