iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max announced with 120Hz ProMotion display and smaller notch

Apple held its big fall event today, and the flagship products announced are the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. They’ve got the same chipset as the iPhone 13 series, just like we’ve seen in the past, but they’ve got better displays, better cameras, and more.

First of all, let’s get the elephant in the room out of the way. The notch at the top of the display is smaller, 40% smaller in fact. If you’re a hater of the notch, it’s something that you’ll be happy to see. The display is better too, although it;s still being called Super Retina XDR.

It supports 1,000-nit max brightness, which will be great for outdoor use. It’s also 120Hz, a refresh rate that competitors in the Android space have been using for a while. It’s an adaptive ProMotion display, meaning that it’s not going to suck down your battery life. The screen refresh rate is based on what you’re doing, and it can be as low as 10Hz.

Of course, we’ve got lots of camera improvements, from sensors to software. The new main sensor now has an f/1.5 aperture for better low-light performance, and the ultra-wide camera is f/1.8. The telephoto lens is now 3x, but if you want to get up close, Apple is going to let you use the ultra-wide lens for macro photography at a minimum 2cm distance, and it can do macro slow motion.

That’s not all though. The A15 Bionic has a new ISP, which means that it takes better pictures. There are big-time video capture improvements too. You an record 4K 60fps video in Dolby Vision, but there’s also a new cinematic mode, which lets you lock focus onto subjects, dynamically adjust, and more. It can also record ProRes video.

Let’s talk about that A15 Bionic chip that’s powering it though. It’s a hexa-core chip that has two new performance cores and four new efficiency cores. It also adds a new neural engine, and as mentioned, a new ISP. Considering that Apple has been ahead of its competition for some time with its custom chipsets, its no surprise that that’s still the case.

Next up, Apple is promising better battery life. If you grab an iPhone 13 Pro, you should get an extra 1.5 hours, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max will get you an extra 2.5 hours.

Pricing hasn’t changed for either model. They’re still going to start at $999 and $1,099 for the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max, respectively, and that’s for 128GB of storage, while there are also 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB options. You can pre-order this Friday (September 17), and than the devices will be available on September 24. It comes in Graphite, Gold, Silver, and Sierra Blue.

iPhone 13 and 13 Mini announced with new colors, bigger battery, OLED display and more

We’re all about Android here at XDA, but Apple’s iPhones are hugely influential across the entire smartphone landscape. After months of speculation about specifications, pricing, and even what Apple might call this year’s flagship series (some thought the company might go with iPhone 12S), the iPhone 13 series is finally here. It brings with it an upgraded chipset, and better cameras, and OLED support. There aren’t any major upgrades to speak of here, as the new iPhones are an iterative improvement over last year’s iPhone 12 series.

At the California Streaming event today, Apple released four new iPhones — the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max. Here’s a quick look at the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 Mini.

Design

The new iPhone 13 series has a uniform design across the board, something that we’ve come to expect from Apple’s iPhones. Aside from the addition of an extra camera on the back, all four devices look the same and are just bigger versions of each other. The sides are flat and the notch on the front has gotten a small bit narrower. It comes in five colors:

Display

Like every year, this year’s iPhone has the best display on an iPhone, ever. With the introduction of Apple’s ProMotion technology to the iPhone lineup, this is also the first time iPhones pack high refresh rate panels — and 120Hz, no less. The 2021 iPhone 13 series packs an OLED display and comes with what Apple calls Super Retina XDR technology. XDR stands for Extreme Dynamic Range, and Apple claims to offer improved display brightness and color reproduction.

Apple claims that the Super Retina XDR display can get as bright as 800 nits in the iPhone 13, or 1200 nits in HDR. It also supports HDR 10, Dolby Vision, and HLG. The iPhone 13 Mini comes in at 5.4-inches, whereas the regular iPhone 13 comes in at 6.1-inches.

Apple introduced OLED displays with last year’s iPhone 12 series, even on the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Mini, and things aren’t any different this year. Apple has also brought its “Ceramic Shield” technology to the iPhone 13 lineup, which it debuted with the iPhone 12 series. Apple claims that it’s four times better at surviving accidental drops. That should hopefully mean fewer cracked screens.

Cameras

Apple prides itself on its smartphone cameras, with the company’s smartphones being hailed as the king of videography, and one of the very best in still photography. However, the iPhone 13 series doesn’t have too many improvements over its predecessor.

The iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 mini come with two cameras, and Apple says that this is their most advanced camera system yet. It has an f/1.6 primary sensor with 1.7μm pixel size and a 26mm focal length. The iPhone 12 Pro Max’s sensor-shift stabilization makes an appearance on all of this year’s iPhone 13 models, helping to enhance low-light performance and video stabilization on the primary sensor.

Additionally, the ultra-wide camera gets an upgrade with a five-element lens and an f/2.4 aperture for upgraded low-light performance. Finally, the ultra-wide camera is now also a lot better and faster at auto-focus.

Apple also introduced cinematic mode, along with 4K 60 FPS video. When you start recording, the cinematic mode will hold focus which will anticipate and intelligently change the focus for you. You can tap to shift focus, and tap to lock, and it’s available for the front-facing camera too.

Chipset and Software

The iPhone 13 series is powered by the A15 Bionic chipset. It’s built on a 5nm fabrication process, packing 2 high-performance cores, 4 high-efficiency cores. Apple says that it’s the fastest CPU in any smartphone and up to 50% faster than the leading competition.

It has a 4-core GPU with 30% faster graphics than the leading competition. There’s a new 16-core neural engine, capable of 15.8 trillion operations per second.

The iPhone 13 series brings with it iOS 15 — the latest and greatest version of Apple’s smartphone operating system yet. It has been available in beta for quite a while and there’s a lot to love in it. But we still certainly want more.

iPad Mini 6 announced with new design, colors, Touch ID, 5G, Pencil support and more

During its special event today, Apple announced the latest generation of the iPad Mini, the 6th one in the family. This is a pretty major update for the iPad Mini, bringing a new design, new colors, and plenty of new features including 5G support.

First off, the new iPad Mini (6th generation) features an all-new enclosure design with minimal bezels all around, similar to the iPad Pro. The new design also comes in a range of four colors, including purple, pink, starlight, and space grey.

Because of the smaller bezels, there’s no longer a home button under the display, and instead, Touch ID is built into the power button at the top. The iPad Mini also has a larger 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display thanks to the smaller bezels. The display can reach up to 500 nits of brightness and has the usual features like true tone and wide color support.

The big news with the display is the addition of support for the second-generation Apple Pencil. This Apple Pencil features a magnetic charging connector and it attaches to the side of the iPad Mini when you’re not using it.

Another big feature in the 6th generation iPad Mini is the addition of a USB Type-C port to replace the Lightning connector used before. This upgrade is similar to what the iPad Pro got in 2018, and it also means you get up to 5Gbps transfer speeds using this port, which is 10x faster than on previous generations. And speaking of higher speeds, the new iPad Mini also supports 5G with download speeds up to 3.5Gbps.

This is all thanks to the new chipset inside, the Apple A15 Bionic. This is debuting today, and it’s also inside the new iPhone 13 series. It has a 6-core CPU that promises up to 40% more performance compared to the previous iPad Mini, and a 5-core GPU delivers up to 80% more performance for graphics. There’s also a 16-core Neural Engine for AI-related tasks, which Apple says will result in 2x more performance for machine learning tasks like the new Live Text feature in iPadOS 15.

Moving on to the cameras, there’s now a 12MP sensor on both the front and back of the iPad Mini (6th generation). The rear camera features Focus Pixels, a wider aperture, and True Tone flash for more natural lighting in photos. On the front, Apple is using an ultra-wide 12MP camera, which enables the Center Stage feature introduced with the latest iPad Pro. This allows the camera to focus and zoom in on the user as they move around during a video call, and it can also accommodate new people joining in.

The 6th generation iPad Mini will launch with iPadOS 15, which brings a whole suite of features to the platform. In addition to the aforementioned Live Text, there’s Focus, Apple’s take on Do Not Disturb, new widget layouts, and more. You can read all about iOS and iPadOS 15 here.

The iPad Mini is available to order today on the Apple Store starting at $499, and it will begin shipping on September 24.

Microsoft releases Windows 10 build 19043.1237 – here’s what’s new

It’s the second Tuesday of the month, and you know what that means. It’s Patch Tuesday, so if it’s made by Microsoft and it’s supported, it’s getting an update today. For most Windows 10 users, that includes versions 2004, 20H2, and 21H1, although Windows Insiders that are testing 21H2 will get the same update. That’s because all of these versions of the OS are really the same bits, just separated by an enablement package.

Indeed, they’re all getting the exact same cumulative update, which is KB5005565, and that brings the build number to 19044.1237, 19043.1237, 19042.1237, or 19041.1237, depending on if you’re on Windows 10 version 21H2, 21H1, 20H2, or 2004, respectively. You can manually download the update here, if you want to manually install it. The list of highlights is just security updates:

• Updates security for your Windows operating system.

As usual, the full list of fixes isn’t super big. The larger changelog typically comes alongside the optional update that arrives later in the month, so if you didn’t take that update, those fixes are just bundled into this one.

KB5005565 Fixes

• Addresses an issue that causes PowerShell to create an infinite number of child directories. This issue occurs when you use the PowerShell Move-Item command to move a directory to one of its children. As a result, the volume fills up and the system stops responding.

There are also certain older versions of Windows 10 that are still supported. These updates are only available under certain conditions. For example, Windows 10 version 1909 is only supported for Enterprise and Education SKUs, while versions 1507, 1607, and 1809 are only supported in the Long-Term Servicing Channel.

The Apple Watch Series 7 has a bigger display, faster charing and improved durability

As expected, Apple today unveiled the new Apple Watch lineup alongside the iPhone 13 series. The new models, dubbed the Apple Watch Series 7, succeed the Watch 6 series and offer a range of upgrades over their predecessor, including bigger displays, faster charging, and much more.

As mentioned in various leaks, the Apple Watch Series 7 sports a brand new design that’s a departure from the previous models. The curved squircle design that was around for several years is now gone, and it’s replaced by flatter displays and edges. The Apple Watch Series 7 has 20% larger screen area and 40% thinner bezel than the Watch Series 6.

The durability has also been improved. The watch has a crack-resistant front, IP6X dust resistance, and WR50 water resistance.

On the health and fitness front, the Apple Watch Series 7 comes with the usual set of features including ECG tracking, blood oxygen monitoring, sleep tracking, automatic workout detection. Apple is also expanding the availability of the Fitness+ app to more markets.

There were rumors about the Apple Watch Series 7 finally getting a blood pressure sensor but there was no mention of it in today’s announcement.

The Apple Watch Series 7 promises up to 18 hours of battery life on a single charge and offers 33% faster charging than the Watch Series 6.

Other highlights of the Apple Watch Series 7 include GPS, ultra-wideband (UWB) support, Bluetooth, dual-band Wi-Fi, and wireless charging support. The smartwatch runs watchOS 8 out of the box.

The Apple Watch Series 7 starts at $399 will be available later this fall. The watch comes in a wide range of finishes, including Midnight, Starlight, Green, Blue, PRODUCT(RED), gold stainless steel, graphite stainless steel, and more.

Apple’s entry-level iPad 9 is a contender for the best back-to-school tablet

Apple is holding its big fall event today, and the first thing that it announced is the ninth-generation iPad. It’s the entry-level full-size tablet from the company, and it’s now being refreshed with an A13 Bionic chipset.

The Cupertino firm said that its new iPad is three times faster than the best-selling Chromebook and six times faster than the best-selling Android tablet. Of course, it’s important to keep those numbers in perspective. Apple really doesn’t talk about which model it’s testing against, and the best-selling one if often not the best one. Still, it’s against a $329 iPad.

With the spec bump, Apple not only touted speed improvements, but there will also be camera improvements. A new chipset has a new image signal processor, so that means you can use the same 8MP sensor to get better pictures. Apple did the same thing with the latest iPhone SE, which was basically an iPhone 8 with better internals.

There is a new front camera though. Apple talked about a new 12MP front sensor, which has a 122-degree field of view. This should make for better selfies, video calls, and more. The 10.2-inch Retina display is another thing that Apple talked about on-stage, with the company touting the True Tone display, which adjusts the temperature of the screen based on lighting.

Basically, it adds up to a new processor and a new front camera. The screen is the same, as is the rear camera and the design. That also means that the same accessories work with it, such as Apple Pencil and the keyboard.

One thing that hasn’t changed about the ninth-generation iPad is the price. It still starts at $329 for 64GB of storage, and you can get it for $299 with an educational discount. The only colors it comes in are Space Gray and Silver, and of course, there are cellular models. Unlike the iPad Mini, the cellular is still just 4G LTE. You can order the ninth-generation iPad today, and it will ship next week.

Razer has a new Wolverine V2 Chroma controller for Xbox and PC

Razer has launched the new Wolverine V2 Chroma controller for Xbox consoles and PC. As the name suggests, this is a new version of the Wolverine V2 controller with support for customizable Chroma lighting. However, that’s not the only thing that’s new in this version, and it’s overall a more customizable and capable controller.

The Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma retains a lot of the benefits of the original version. The face buttons have the same mecha-tactile mechanism, promising faster actuation times compared to standard buttons and a lifetime of up to 3 million clicks. You also get four shoulder buttons (two more than a standard controller) plus two analog triggers, and the triggers have adjustable travel distance. If you need more precision for the analog controls, such as in a racing game, you can use the full travel distance, but if you want faster actuation for an FPS, you can reduce it.

However, there are some changes in the buttons, too. First off, you have four additional buttons on the back of the controller, which you can map to any of the other buttons on a standard controller.  These are easily accessible with the fingers that already rest on the back of the controller. To map these buttons, you need the Razer Controller Setup app for Xbox and PC, which is available on the Microsoft Store.

Over on the front, the D-pad has a circular design now, making it easier to move diagonally, and the thumbsticks have swappable caps, so you can choose between concave and convex caps depending on your preference. Concave stick caps are taller and offer a bit more precision, while convex sticks are shorter and allow for faster movement. You can also adjust the sensitivity of the analog sticks in the Razer Controller Setup app.

One final improvement is that while the Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma is still wired, the cable is detachable in this version. This should make it easier to take the controller with you or store it without having a cable sticking out at the top.

Otherwise, the Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma is the same as the standard Wolverine V2. It has the same L-shaped handle design with rubber-covered grips to make the controller less slippery and more comfortable. It comes with rumble support, which is also adjustable, and it has a 3.5mm headphone jack for audio passthrough.

The Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma is available today from Razer and other retailers for $149.99 or €159.99. You can buy it below. If you’re more of a mouse and keyboard fan, the company recently launched the Basilisk V3 mouse, as well as a series of Halo-themed peripherals.
