OnePlus 6 and 6T now receiving November security patches

OnePlus might be slow to update many of its phones to newer versions of Android, but the company still does a (mostly) decent job of keeping the security patches coming. The OnePlus 6 and 6T are three years old at this point, but security updates are still trickling out for both phones, and now the November 2021 patches have arrived.

OxygenOS 11.1.2.2 is now rolling out to the OnePlus 6 and 6T. The changelog only mentions “improved system stability” and the November 2021 security patch level, with seemingly no other changes. This is the first update for both phones since September, when OxygenOS 11.1.1.1 brought the September 2021 patches and various bug fixes.

This could end up being the last official update for both the OnePlus 6 and 6T, considering they were only promised two years of Android updates and three years of security patches. Both phones are still plenty powerful for 2021 though, and OnePlus makes it easy to unlock the bootloader and install custom ROMs, so head on over to the forums for each device (linked below) if you’re interested in keeping your OnePlus 6 or 6T up to date.

OnePlus is still pushing OxygenOS 11.1.2.2 to the OP6/6T in a staged rollout, but if you don’t want to wait, we have all the links you need (thanks to XDA member some_random_username). As usual with OnePlus phones, you just have to download the correct package from the links below and move it to the root directory of the phone’s internal storage. Then head over to Settings > System > System Update > Local Update and select the downloaded file to begin the installation.

XDA Basics: How to use the new 2FA code generator on iOS 15

For years, iPhone users had to depend on third-party apps to generate 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) codes. These codes act as an extra security layer for online accounts. When you enable 2FA, websites and apps will ask you to type an expiring, one-time code. The prompt typically appears after entering your email/username and password correctly. These codes are time-based and usually refresh every 30 seconds. Thanks to the latest iOS update, you can now generate them without using any third-party apps. Here’s how to use the new 2FA code generator on iOS 15.

How to use the new 2FA code generator on iOS 15

  • Launch the Settings app on your iPhone.

How to use the new 2FA code generator on iOS 15

  • Scroll down until you see Passwords. Click on it.

How to use the new 2FA code generator on iOS 15

  • Your iPhone will ask you to Face/Touch ID or enter your device’s password.

How to use the new 2FA code generator on iOS 15

  • Once you authenticate, you will see a list of the passwords you have saved in Apple Keychain.
  • If the service you want to secure is on the list, click on it to view it.

How to use the new 2FA code generator on iOS 15

  • However, if it isn’t on the list, click the plus (+) button in the top right corner.

How to use the new 2FA code generator on iOS 15

  • Fill in the blanks — the website, username/email, and password.

  • Click Done in the top right corner, and the new service’s details (website, username/email, and password) will be displayed.

How to use the new 2FA code generator on iOS 15

  • Tap on Set Up Verification Code.

How to use the new 2FA code generator on iOS 15

  • iOS will prompt you to choose between entering a setup key and scanning a QR code.
  • Using another device, go to your account settings on the desired service’s website/app and enable 2FA.
  • You will be given a QR code and/or a setup key. You may use either to set up the code generator, so choose the one you prefer from the iPhone’s prompt. If you don’t have another device, you can copy the setup code from the website/app, then navigate to the Settings app to paste it in the Passwords section, when prompted to.

How to use the new 2FA code generator on iOS 15

  • Once you scan/add it, the expiring 2FA code in the Passwords section of the iPhone’s Settings app will appear on the service’s details page.

How to use the new 2FA code generator on iOS 15

  • Whenever you attempt to sign in to the service and it asks for your 2FA code, head to Passwords, and tap on the code to copy it

It’s very important to use 2FA, when offered by a service. This extra layer of security protects you from hacking and phishing attempts. So even if someone has your login credentials, they still won’t be able to directly sign in.

Do you use 2FA on your online accounts? Let us know in the comments section below.

The Surface Laptop Studio with a 512GB SSD is discounted to just $1,500 today only

Black Friday and Cyber Monday may be over, but Best Buy is treating Microsoft fans to a pretty sweet deal for a very limited time. Right now, you can get the Surface Laptop Studio – yes, the one that launched just a couple of months ago – at a $300 discount, making it cost just $1,499. That’s still a good chunk of money, but Surface PCs rarely don’t often get much bigger discounts, and especially not so early after they’ve launched. However, you’ll have to be quick, as the deal ends at midnight Eastern Time.

This discount only applies to a specific variant of the Surface Laptop Studio, which comes with an Intel Core i5-11300H processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD. That’s not the highest-end model available, but it’s a fantastic laptop nonetheless. That Intel processor has four cores and eight threads, it can boost up to 4.4GHz, and it’s a 35W processor, so it can hold higher speeds for longer than a typical laptop might. At $1,499, this model is even cheaper than the base configuration, which only has a 256GB SSD and officially costs $1,599.

    Surface Laptop Studio ($300 off)
Sporting a unique form factor, powerful specs, and a great display, the Surface Laptop Studio is one of the best devices Microsoft has made. It's $300 off, so this is the best time to buy one.

The Surface Laptop Studio is easily one of our favorite Surface devices in recent memory. It’s got powerful hardware, a great display with a 120Hz refresh, and one of the best designs you can find on a laptop. It’s a convertible, but instead of using a 360-degree hinge, the display rotates on a second hinge that lets you pull the screen closer to you, or lay it flat over the keyboard to use as a tablet. It’s a very unique approach, and in my opinion, more convenient than a typical convertible.

This is also one of the first Surface devices to include Thunderbolt support, so if you want to use that 120Hz screen for gaming, you can hook up an external GPU and have all the power you need. If you want to learn more about it, you can read out Surface Laptop Studio review, and if you like what you see, don’t wait too long to make your purchase.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE leaks again, this time with European pricing

Last year’s Galaxy S20 FE (for ‘Fan Edition’) was one of the best phones of 2020, at least in the United States, where it undercut many other flagship-class phones in pricing. Samsung has been working on a sequel, but the phone has been continuously delayed, and there has even been speculation that it was cancelled outright. However, the phone still seems on track for release, and now more information has been leaked.

WinFuture has obtained high-resolution press renders for the Galaxy S21 FE, showing the same design we’ve seen in other leaks. The phone looks nearly identical to the regular Galaxy S21, with the same triple-camera system as the S21 and S21 Plus, an Exynos 2100 chipset (at least in Europe), and a 6.4-inch OLED screen. 8GB RAM and 128/256GB storage is likely, but WinFuture didn’t outright confirm those details.

Galaxy S21 FE Galaxy S21 FE Galaxy S21 FE

The report also includes European pricing for the Galaxy S21 FE, which is supposedly just under 660 Euros for the base 128GB model, and 705 Euros for the 256GB version. In Germany, the phone could be a bit cheaper, at 649 for 128GB and 699 for the 256GB version.

That pricing seems fairly competitive, at least in Europe, but it won’t undercut budget flagships from other brands. For example, the Realme GT with a Snapdragon 888 chipset and 120Hz AMOLED screen is €499 in Germany right now. However, Samsung could release it in some regions at a discount, like it did last year with the S20 FE (when pre-ordering the phone in the US saved you $100).

We’re also approaching the expected release date for the Galaxy S22 series, so it will be interesting to see how the S21 FE’s release will be affected by Samsung’s newer phones. The S22 series will almost certainly be more expensive, but it could still drive potential sales away from the S21 FE.

Apple has released iOS 15.2 developer beta 4, here’s what’s new

Apple has released the fourth beta of the upcoming iOS 15.2 to registered developers. This update comes packed with changes and tweaks aimed at user privacy and security. These features include some that Apple had teased during the iOS 15 reveal at WWDC21. App Privacy Report, Communication Safety, a tweaked Notification Summary, and more will be available to the public within a month or two. Here’s everything that is new.

Beta 4

iOS 15.2 developer beta 4

We haven’t been able to find new features in this build yet. We will update the article if we discover any changes. Apple highlights some of the bugs that have been fixed in beta 4, though.

Beta 3

Reminders

According to Apple’s release notes, you can now rename and delete tags in bulk — as opposed to doing that individually — in the Reminders app. However, we haven’t been able to replicate that.

Tweaks to the Items tab in Find My app

Find my items tab tweaks iOS 15.2 beta 3

Beta 2 tweaked the Items tab in the Find My app. For some reason, though, this third beta changes it back to how it used to be pre-beta 2. The Items tab displays “Identify Found Item” yet again.

Tweaks to Macro mode settings

In iOS 15.1, Apple added a new “Auto Macro” toggle to the Settings app. According to MacRumors, this latest beta renames the toggle to “Macro Control.” The toggle is described as:

Show Camera control for automatically switching to the Ultra Wide lens to capture macro photos and videos.

Search playlists in Apple Music

Apple Music search playlists iOS 15.2 beta 3 Apple Music search playlists iOS 15.2 beta 3

MacRumors has also reported that the latest beta adds a search bar in Apple Music playlists. You can reveal it by swiping down in any list. This allows you to search for a certain song or artist inside the playlist. Playing a song from the search results will only queue songs that match the search term, not the entire playlist. So this feature works as a filter inside the playlist.

Beta 2

Communication Safety feature

communication safety ios 15.2 beta 2

According to 9to5Mac, this beta adds Messages Communication Safety for minors. This feature detects nudity sent to children’s devices, blurs them, and shows a prompt offering guidance. Hints of this feature were first discovered in iOS 15.2 beta 1, but now it can be enabled by a guardian on a child’s device. It’s worth mentioning that the feature is off by default.

Hide My Email in the Mail app

MacRumors reports that this beta also adds a shortcut to Hide My Email inside the Mail app. Previously, users could only access it through iCloud settings in the iPhone Settings app. This feature allows iCloud+ subscribers to create random aliases that forward emails to their original iCloud address. This lets users avoid sharing the original one with websites and people for privacy reasons or other concerns.

Legacy Contacts in Apple ID settings

Legacy contact iOS 15.2 beta 2

According to Apple’s release notes, this release also allows users to add Legacy Contacts to their Apple IDs from iPhone Settings. These contacts will get access to your data in case you pass away, and they may download a copy as well.

Tweaks to the Items tab in Find My app

MacRumors has also shared that this iOS build tweaks the Items tab in the Find My app. Apple has renamed “Identify Found Item” to “Help Return Lost Item.” That’s in addition to an “Items That Can Track Me” option that allows users to scan for nearby Find My-enabled devices — such as AirTags — in case someone is tracking them.

New Store tab in the TV app

9to5Mac has discovered that there’s a new Store tab in the Apple TV app. This tab includes Movies and TV Shows sections that allow users to buy or rent content from the respective category.

Beta 1

According to MacRumors, iOS 15.2 developer beta 1 brings the following changes.

App Privacy Report

app privacy report 15.2 1 app privacy report 15.2 2

App Privacy Report is a feature that Apple teased back in June. It allows users to view the data, sensors, and servers apps are individually accessing. This change brings absolute transparency that makes it significantly tougher for malicious apps to secretly contact certain servers or access device sensors without users’ knowledge.

Emergency SOS tweaks

emergency sos ios 15.2 2

iOS 15.2 updates the Emergency SOS feature that lets you auto-call your country’s emergency line. You can now either rapidly hit the side button or hold the side button and either of the volume buttons for a few seconds. The countdown timer has also been changed from three to eight seconds.

Notification Summary tweaks

notification summary ios 15.2 1 notification summary ios 15.2 2

The Notification Summary that was first introduced in iOS 15.0 gets tweaked in iOS 15.2. The summary is now presented in a card-style view that makes glancing at the notification contents easier.

Hints of the Communication Safety feature

Apple’s child safety feature that detects nudity on minors’ devices will be released with iOS 15.2. The feature scans sent and received photos through the Messages app and notifies the parents if any inappropriate content is detected. The first beta of iOS 15.2 has code that mentions the feature, but it’s not live just yet.

What do you think of the new features in iOS 15.2? Let us know in the comments section below.

Facebook will force you to use 2FA if you’re a person of interest

Meta-owned Facebook will be forcing users with a large number of followers to enable Facebook Protect. This feature is a password-strength check combined with 2-factor authentication (2FA). Highest-profile and highest-risk users will have until December 17 to enable this extra security layer. Otherwise, the company will lock them out of their accounts until they do so.

Facebook Protect was first tested in 2018. The company then expanded its availablity prior to the 2020 US elections. Right now, 1.5 million users have enabled Facebook Protect, with around two thirds of them newly enabling 2FA. Meta plans to make this feature available in over 50 countries by the end of 2021, as CNET reports.

2FA is a security feature that adds a constantly changing condition to the login equation. The feature usually requires you to type a 6-digit number — that expires every 30 seconds — after you correctly enter your email/username and password. This makes hacking into your online accounts a tougher process. We advise all users to enable 2FA on their accounts, but people of interest on Facebook won’t have a say in the matter in about two weeks.

This feature will mostly be forced upon human rights activists, government officials, journalists, and other Facebook users who are likely to get targeted by cybercriminals. Meta will be rolling it out in regions where it can offer support the most. That’s in addition to countries that have upcoming elections or other critical events. The warning is already showing up for the popular users, giving them two weeks before locking them out.

What do you think of Meta’s locking-out protective approach? Let us know in the comments section below.

Here are the best video editors available for your Mac

Apple revealed the new MacBook Pro 2021 during its Unleashed Mac event last month. If you own a MacBook Pro, make sure to protect it with a case. macOS is a great operating system for handling media editing. There are plenty of tools out there to edit footages, for both basics and professional needs. Here are the best video editors available for Mac.

Best video editors for Mac

iMovie

iMovie mac

iMovie is a free video editor from Apple. It’s available on macOS, iPadOS, and iOS, so you can start a project on your Mac and edit using another device on the go. This app is available on the App Store for free, and it comes pre-installed on new Macs. So you won’t have to pay an extra cent for it or download any software — assuming you haven’t deleted it from your machine.

This app allows you to create both movies and Hollywood-style trailers. The latter has several templates for various genres, where you can just insert your media and get going. Apart from adding the videos and photos, you can control other aspects, such as the titles, background audio, and more.

The more powerful options, though, are available through the movie creator, rather than trailers. There you can create and edit your content freestyle. You can add color and audio filters, change the playback speed, reduce background noise, crop, rotate, and much more.

This video editor is perfect for causal hobbyists and students who don’t need a fully-packed editor. iMovie provides a playground where projects can be created, but within certain limits. We’ve prepared for you an ultimate guide on how to use iMovie on Mac. If you’re looking for a professional editor, this software isn’t for you.

    iMovie
This free software from Apple offers basic video editing tools and syncs projects across iDevices.

Final Cut Pro

final cut pro mac

This video editor from Apple is aimed at professionals. If you’re in the film industry or take video editing way too seriously, this one’s for you. However, it costs a whopping $299 in the US, just so you know. Apple offers a 90-day free trial, so you can give it a spin before investing your bucks in it.

Final Cut Pro takes iMovie to the next level, and it even supports importing projects from the latter for further Pro edits. You can deal with 360º videos, edit cinematic footage shot on iPhone 13, and detect faces or other objects and track their motion. That’s in addition to adding and deleting focus points, adjusting ProRes Raw camera settings, and editing while importing media from other sources.

If you’re looking to compile moments shot on a journey or document causal moments of your life, you might want to settle for iMovie rather than Final Cut Pro. This software is aimed at professionals and exceptional enthusiasts in the field.

    Final Cut Pro
This software from Apple is available as a one-time purchase and is aimed at professionals and exceptional enthusiasts.

Adobe Premiere Pro

adobe premiere pro

This software from Adobe is also aimed at professionals. However, it’s a subscription service, rather than a one-time purchase. So if you’d rather pay $20.99 per month rather, this one’s for you. This also makes it more affordable if you only temporarily need a video editor and don’t plan to use it long term. It comes with a free trial, so you can also give it a shot before you start paying.

When compared to Final Cut Pro, there are a few differences between the two professional editors. Adobe’s supports 3D editing while Apple’s doesn’t. So if you believe you will be working on 3D projects, this one is for you. Otherwise, both apps offer most of the main features, such as Multicam and 360º VR video editing.

    Adobe Premiere Pro
This software from Adobe is offered as a subscription service. It is aimed at professionals and hobbyists who take their projects seriously.

Adobe Premiere Elements

adobe premiere elements

If you aren’t a fan of monthly subscriptions, Adobe offers a video editor that is lighter than Premier Pro as a one-time purchase. Premiere Elements costs $99 and allows you to make basic and intermediate edits. This editor takes advantage of Adobe Sensei AI for automated editing. You can add motion and colorize static photos, reframe subjects, select specific areas and add effects, in addition to fixing grainy footage.

This is the right video editor for you if you’re more than just an average user but not enthusiastic enough to get a professional one. It offers a 30-day free trial, so you can test it before deciding if you want to make the purchase.

    Adobe Premiere Elements
This software from Adobe is available as a one time purchase. It offers tools that match basic to intermediate needs.

DaVinci Resolve

DaVinci Resolve

This video editor offers both free and paid versions, depending on your needs. The paid version is a one-time purchase that unlocks extra capabilities for power users. The free version offers editing tools, motion graphics, visual effects, audio post-processing, and color correction.

If you need more, for $295 you can unlock automatic facial recognition for face refinement tools, temporal and spatial noise reduction, and photorealistic optical quality motion effects. That’s in addition to lens flare, lens blur, aperture diffraction, Revival restoration tools, film damage or film grain Resolve FX, and more.

    DaVinci Resolve
This video editor is available in two versions -- free and paid. So you can choose one based on your editing needs.

Personally, I’m not a video editor, but if I had to choose, I would go for iMovie. It supports the latest technologies Apple adds to newer iPhone cameras. So special footages like Cinematic mode can be edited just fine. As someone who only takes videos on his iPhone, this is the option that makes sense to me most. Final Cut Pro is too advanced for my basic and infrequent needs.

Which video editor do you use on your Mac? Let us know in the comments section below.
