Xiaomi’s Mi Browser can now save WhatsApp statuses and show your Facebook feed

In case you own a Xiaomi device, you’d know that the company offers several alternatives to Google apps on its MIUI operating system. Among these apps is the Mi Browser which is notorious for serving copious amounts of ads. In a bid to offer users a better browsing experience, Xiaomi rolled out a completely new browser called Mint Browser all the way back in 2018. However, despite its popularity, Xiaomi doesn’t seem to be satisfied with the Mint Browser either and is now launching a third browser app that will, most likely, replace the other two browsers.

As per a recent report from Android Police, the all-new Mi Browser takes design cues from the Mint Browser and features a more modern aesthetic when compared to the traditional Mi Browser. It also comes with a few tweaks and additional features, including a bottom navigation bar, two tabs for suggested YouTube videos and games, and a new app icon. Xiaomi has also included a dedicated Facebook page that will allow users to access their Facebook feed right on the browser’s home page.

The browser also features a download button for saving videos and a new WhatsApp icon that will help users save their contacts’ WhatsApp statuses. In order to achieve this, the Mi Browser accesses the data saved by the WhatsApp app and extracts the temporary files. While this may be a convenient feature for some users, it comes with its own set of privacy issues.

It’s also worth noting that Xiaomi hasn’t updated its Mint Browser or the old Mi Browser in over a month, which leads us to believe that the new Mi Browser will replace both these apps on the Play Store and within MIUI. If you’re interested in checking out Xiaomi’s new browser, you can go ahead and download it from the Play Store by following the link below. In case you don’t see the Play Store listing yet, you can also download it from APK Mirror by following this link.

Samsung is preparing a Galaxy Tab S6 Lite with S Pen support and a 5G Galaxy A71

Back in October last year, Samsung launched the Galaxy Tab S6 — a flagship tablet with top-of-the-line specs, AKG tuned speakers, a fantastic display, and S Pen support. In my review of the Galaxy Tab S6, I found it to be an excellent choice for artists or people looking for a portable media device, but still not good enough to be a laptop replacement. Now, it seems like Samsung is prepping up to launch a lite version of the tablet which is expected to be called the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite.

As per a recent report from Android Headlines, the upcoming Galaxy Tab S6 Lite will look a whole lot like the flagship Tab S6 and it will also include support for the same redesigned S Pen. The report claims that the tablet will be powered by Samsung’s Exynos 9611 chipset, which can be found on many of the company’s mid-range smartphones, coupled with 4GB of RAM and up to 128GB of internal storage. In keeping with the specifications, the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite will be a whole lot cheaper than the flagship model and it’s expected to be priced around $399.

The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite has also appeared on the Google Play Console Device Catalog, which confirms the aforementioned specifications and also reveals that it will feature a 1200×2000 resolution display and run Android 10 out of the box. Furthermore, as one of the system features is listed as “com.google.android.feature.EEA_DEVICE,” we expect that the Tab S6 Lite will be sold in Europe. Another revealing feature that’s listed as “com.sec.feature.spen_usp,” confirms that it will support the S Pen. We can also confirm that the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite moniker is legit, since it was recently certified by the Bluetooth SIG with the model number SM-P615.

Along with the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite, Samsung is also prepping up to launch a 5G version of its mid-range Galaxy A71. The device has also been certified by the Bluetooth SIG and it will sold under the Galaxy A71 5G moniker, with the model number SM-A7160. While Samsung hasn’t revealed any more information about the Galaxy A71 5G, we believe that it could feature Samsung’s Exynos 980 chip which includes 5G support.

Vivo’s APEX 2020 5G is a futuristic smartphone that you can’t buy

Vivo has finally lifted the covers off its APEX 2020 concept smartphone, which packs in a ton of interesting innovations. Over the last few days, we saw a couple of leaks and teasers of the device that revealed that it features gimbal-like stabilization in the primary camera, 5-7.5x continuous zoom, a waterfall-style display, and 60W fast wireless charging. But, as promised, the Vivo APEX 2020 packs in several more surprises that we hadn’t anticipated.

APEX 2020

Starting off with the screen, the APEX 2020 concept features a unibody design with a 6.45-inch 120° FullView Edgeless Display that gracefully curves over the side edges and gives the phone a futuristic look. Much like its predecessor, the APEX 2020 does away with all physical buttons on the side and opts for virtual-pressure sensing buttons that add on to the seamless look.

In keeping with the seamless aesthetic, the APEX 2020 also features a 16MP in-display selfie camera that isn’t visible when the screen is on. In order to ensure great camera performance, Vivo increased the light transmittance of the screen right in front of the selfie camera by six times, as compared to other parts of the display, reducing optical interference, diffraction, and stray flashes while using the camera. The camera makes use of a 4-in-1 super-pixel photosensitive chip that aids in capturing clear images and the phone also uses some software optimizations to improve the final image even further.

On the back, the APEX 2020 features a telephoto camera that is capable of 5-7.5x continuous optical zoom which makes use of a 4-group lens combination with two fixed and two movable groups. Much like the Galaxy S20 Ultra and the Huawei P30 Pro, the telephoto camera on the APEX 2020 has a periscope like structure that facilitates continuous zoom and real-time focus at the same time. To further enhance image quality, Vivo has also incorporated a leading multi-frame algorithm that will help users capture clear photos from afar.

APEX 2020

Along with the telephoto lens, the APEX 2020 also features a 48MP primary camera on the back that makes use of a gimbal-like structure for advanced stabilization. This new technology improves the stabilization angle by 200% when compared to traditional OIS systems found on most modern smartphones. Vivo claims that the gimbal-like structure eliminates the need for any specialized equipment while capturing video on the APEX 2020 and it is also capable of improving night-time photography.

The 60W Wireless Super FlashCharge technology that we’d seen earlier is capable of charging a 2,000mAh battery in just 20 minutes, which is just as good as most wired fast charging solutions these days. Additionally, the Vivo APEX 2020 is also equipped with innovations like 3rd generation Screen SoundCasting, Instant Photobomb Removal, and Voice Tracking Auto-Focus.

As far as the core specifications are concerned, the APEX 2020 packs in Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 865 chip with the Snapdragon X55 modem for 5G support. It features 12GB of RAM, coupled with 256GB of internal storage, and runs Android 10 with Vivo’s own Android skin on top. While it’s safe to assume that the APEX 2020 won’t be going into production anytime soon (if ever), it would definitely be great to get our hands on the device and check out all these new innovations in action.

Spotify will get a refreshed mobile UI on Android and iOS

Spotify is undoubtedly one of the most popular music streaming services out there, but it faces strong competition from the likes of YouTube Music and Apple Music internationally, and services like JioSaavn in India. In order to stay ahead of the competition, the service keeps introducing new features ever so often. Most recently, Spotify reintroduced its widget for Android users, which was previously deprecated in a feature update. Now, in a bid to keep up with the times, Spotify is releasing a refreshed mobile UI for Android and iOS.

As per a recent blog post from the company, the refreshed UI brings some significant changes that are expected to improve the way users listen to music on Spotify. These include a new universal Shuffle Play button that aims to streamline audio streaming on the platform to a single click.

Spotify Action row

Along with that, there’s a redesigned Action row that houses all actions, including ‘like’, ‘play, and ‘download’, grouped together in the central part of the app. The action bar also houses a new downloading for listening without WiFi for premium users, which looks a lot like the one that the app has been using for podcasts. What’s really interesting is that the new Action row has an adaptive design that responds to the size of each device for easier one-handed use.

Furthermore, the UI redesign now also shows cover art in all views except the ‘Album’ view, which is expected to make navigating through the app and looking for familiar songs a bit easier. For previously liked songs, the cover art will also show a heart icon next to the track name. The new UI redesign is already rolling out for iOS users, but Spotify hasn’t revealed any timeline for the Android release. In a statement to 9to5Google, the company just said that the redesign is “coming soon” to Android.

Google’s Pixel Feature Drop for March may include dark mode scheduling, Quick Access Wallet, and more

Back in December last year, Google introduced a new approach to bring feature updates for its Pixel series. Instead of rolling out new features whenever they were ready, the company adopted a more systematic approach and announced that it will be rolling out a new “feature drop” every three months alongside the Android security patches. The first feature drop was released along with the December security patches and it introduced a couple of new features, including post-snap Portrait Mode, auto Call Screening, and more. As per the release schedule, Google is expected to roll out the second Pixel feature drop next month. While the company hasn’t released any information about what features will be included in the next drop, a teardown of the latest update for the Pixel Tips app reveals all that’s coming in the next drop.

The teardown in question was conducted by our friends over at 9to5Google and here’s what they discovered:

Dark Mode scheduling

Dark Mode scheduling first made an appearance in an early beta release of Android 10, alongside the new system-wide dark mode. The feature allowed users to schedule dark mode to activate automatically either at sunset or a custom time. However, the feature was deprecated before the stable release as the company believed that it might negatively affect the user experience by suddenly restarting applications while they’re in use. Then, back in December last year, a comment on the Google Issue Tracker revealed that the company was still working on the feature, suggesting that the feature could make a comeback in Android 11.

<string name=”tips_darktheme2_feature_description”>Dark theme turns on automatically at sunset</string>
<string name=”tips_darktheme2_feature_name”>Schedule Dark theme</string>
<string name=”tips_darktheme2_link”>Dark theme settings</string>
<string name=”tips_darktheme2_media_description”>Video about Dark theme. To add Dark theme to Quick Settings, swipe down twice from the top of your screen and tap Edit.</string>
<string name=”tips_darktheme2_summary”>”Dark theme uses a black background to keep your battery alive longer. It also changes the appearance of your Google apps, like Gmail and Photos.\n\nAdd Dark theme to your Quick Settings to turn it on or off anytime. Touch and hold to set up a schedule.”</string>
<string name=”tips_darktheme2_title”>Take it easy on your eyes and your battery with Dark theme</string>

The feature was spotted, once again, in the recently released Android 11 Developer Preview, which led us to believe that that it was an Android 11 exclusive feature. However, according to new strings of code spotted in the aforementioned teardown, the feature might be released in the upcoming Pixel feature drop for Pixel devices running Android 10. The code mentions that the feature will be available within the dark theme settings and users will also be able to set a schedule by long pressing on the dark theme Quick Settings tile.

Cards & Passes

Another feature that was spotted in early beta releases of Android 10 is also making its way to Pixel devices with the next feature drop. The feature, called Cards & Passes, will allow users to quickly access cards that they’ve saved in Google Play in the power menu. Much like Dark mode scheduling, this feature was also spotted in the first Android 11 Developer Preview, which led us to believe that it will be launched with the next iteration of Android.

<string name=”tips_powerkey_features_link”>Cards & passes settings</string>
<string name=”tips_powerkey_features_feature_name”>Quick access to wallet</string>
<string name=”tips_powerkey_features_summary”>”Press & hold the Power button to access payment methods, passes, and emergency info.
– Payment methods in Google Pay: If your phone is locked, you’ll need to unlock it to complete payment.
– Boarding passes and tickets: Available from the lock screen before a flight or event.
– Emergency info: To help in an emergency, people with access to your phone can view your medical info and dial your emergency contacts without unlocking your phone.”</string>

However, strings of code discovered by 9to5Google suggest that it might be released in the March feature drop. The code clearly highlights how the feature will work when released and also offers a couple of different use cases for the feature. For instance, the Cards & Passes feature will allow users to quickly access their saved cards, flight or event tickets, and emergency information from the power menu on the lock screen itself. It also clarifies that even though users will be able to access the information on the lock screen, they will have to unlock their phones in order to complete payment.

Play/Pause Motion Sense gesture

The first Android 11 Developer Preview also highlighted a new Motion Sense gesture for the Pixel 4 series that would allow users to play/pause music without even touching their device. The Pixel Tips teardown highlighted code related to this feature as well, which suggests that it might be released for Pixel 4 devices on Android 10.

<string name=”tips_oslo_music_feature_description”>Use Quick Gestures to pause or skip songs</string>
<string name=”tips_oslo_music_summary”>”Pause or resume music by tapping the air above the phone.
Skip songs by swiping left or right above the phone.”</string>

As per the code, the feature will allow users to simply tap the air above the phone in order to pause or resume music playback. It also highlights the skip track gesture that is already available on Pixel 4 devices.

Car crash detection

Lastly, the teardown also reveals that the Personal Safety app from Android 11 might also make its way to older Pixel phones in the next Pixel drop. For the unaware, the app comes preinstalled on Android 11 Developer Preview 1 and includes a car crash detection feature that was previously only available for the Pixel 4 series.

<string name=”tips_carcrash_title”>Get help calling emergency services after a car crash</string>
<string name=”tips_carcrash_feature_description”>With car crash detection, your phone can call emergency services</string>

While we managed to sideload the app on older Pixel devices and enable the car crash detection feature, it’s great to see Google officially bringing it to more Pixel devices. As per the code, the app will automatically call emergency services when it detects a car crash, which can really come in handy in a pinch.

The new set of features for Pixel devices sure seems interesting, but it’s worth noting that these features were discovered in a teardown and Google might skip some of these features in the next Pixel drop. It’s also quite possible that Google might make some significant changes to these features before they’re released.

[Update: May Be Coming Back] The Google Play Store will no longer show notifications for updated apps

Update 1 (02/28/2020 @ 01:54 AM ET): We’ve found strings in a new version of the Google Play Store that indicates that update notifications may be coming back. Scroll to the bottom for more information. The article as published on January 16, 2020, is preserved below.

Late last month we came across an issue with the Google Play Store which prevented some newly published apps from showing up in search. The bug only brought up related search results when searching for new apps, even though they were definitely live on the platform. Google addressed this issue shortly thereafter and users were once again able to look up new apps in the store. At the time, some users also reported another bug on the Play Store which stopped showing app update notifications in the notification shade. The bug was noticed shortly after Play Store version 17.4 rolled out to users and since then, more and more users have come up to share the issues on Reddit and Google’s Support forums.

Now, as per a recent report from Android Police, it seems like the missing notifications in the Google Play store is intended behavior. A Google spokesperson reached out to the publication to provide further clarification on the issue and revealed that the missing update notifications were a feature and not a bug. Even though the issue was fixed briefly early in December last year, it remerged earlier this month. As of now, there’s no further information from the company regarding its decision to remove Play Store notifications. Users who wish to check the app update status will now have to navigate to the My apps & games section in the Play Store and manually check for updates. Do note that Google won’t push notifications after app updates are successful.

Update: Play Store’s App Update notifications may be coming back

The Google Play Store no longer shows any notifications for when your apps are updated. This change hasn’t exactly been well-received since a lot of people do want to be notified on which apps have recently received an update on their phone. It could be this reason why Google may be planning to bring back the notification.

An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by the developers in a future build.

As spotted in Google Play Store v19.0.12, the strings relating to app update notifications have been added back in, indicating that the feature might be brought back.

<string name="updates_completed_notification_channel">Updates completed</string>
<string name="updates_completed_notification_channel_description">Notify when an app is finished updating</string>

This is no guarantee that the feature is destined for a return merely because we spotted these strings in the newer version of the app. However, the existence of these strings is a pre-requisite in case the feature is to be re-added back in. We hope Google has had a change of heart.
